Selling off a lot of my video game collection over the past few months and finally got up to the N64 stuff. Played games just to test that they worked, ended up playing WCW/nWo Revenge for 3 hours.

The sounds in these games are so satisfying. The loud SNAP when a clothesline gets reversed, the weird grunting when you have a guy in a submission and he's going for the ropes, the nice smack when you nail someone with a strong attack. I get that the new WWE games are all about replicating the home viewer experience, but I miss the goofy wrestler sound effects at times. Much better than hearing Michael Cole.

Mar 14: Screw Jobs

The user can now choose to perform a 'screw job' on one of his employees via the road agent notes. This involves hatching a plan with his opponent whereby the victim believes he is going to be winning the match, only for you to either have a fast count or 'false' submission happen to make him lose.

This risky last resort allows the user to indulge his inner villain and can be useful for taking a belt off someone who doesn't want to do a job...but it may not go down so well with the rest of the locker room.

I wonder what happens if you do a screwjob on somebody with creative control. I mean that's what it's there for I assume, but I wonder if the worker will be able to sue you.

If they're going for realism I don't expect that the courts will take much interest in a "they stoled my belt!!" suit. I mean yeah realistically they might have grounds if they were fired or left directly afterward (since jobbing in such a way would arguably hurt their image / ability to draw elsewhere) but not even Brett irl was a big enough mark for himself to take legal action over fake fight booking.

Mar 15: More Aggressive AI Hiring & Bids

The AI is now not only far more aggressive at going after top talent but also deliberately trying to snatch away workers from rivals, even when they don't particularly need them, as a way of hurting the competition. Part of this new aggression is that the AI is no longer limited to primarily hiring only when their roster needs it, it can now respond intelligently to what other companies are doing.

On top of this, the AI is now also more aggressive in the way it puts together bids, being willing to push itself further and give more incentives so that it can compete even with human players. This is particularly true of financially powerful companies, who will use their muscle to try and blow away the competition.

These features make for a more dynamic game world, particularly amongst the big companies, with bitter wars over top talent now commonplace.

Mar 15: Nepotism

To reflect reality, owners and head bookers in AI companies are now far more likely to use their positions of power to hire friends and family.

Mar 15: Automated Admin Mode Check

Very minor, but the game can now automatically detect whether there is an admin mode issue and flash up a warning when you open the game. This replaces the old system of simply having a warning for everyone. This will hopefully help stop people accidentally forgetting to put themselves in the right mode.

Out of all the things announced for TEW2016, more aggressive hiring AI is the biggest one for me. The fact that they'll hire workers to hurt their rivals even when they have no use for them is something that I've wanted for a couple of installments now.
I am happy that Nepotism is a thing now, that should make questionable hiring/booking by the AI interesting.

Yeah, the AI hiring almost ruins long term games if you're playing with a historical real world database, because even if you're just an indy promotion you can hire every good worker who appears while WWF/E WCW etc sit around doing nothing

I find ufc 2 extremely satisfying. When you beat the poo poo out of someone they look like they got seriously hosed up.

I tried two online ranked matches. Had some weirdness in one that I didn't understand. Dropped someone and went in for the kill with the dude sprawled out and it cut too black like it was playing the between round cut scene, cut to us standing back up and we finished the last 10 seconds of the round.

I then proceeded too get man handled in the second round. I had that mother fucker won! :(

I'll write something up in here tomorrow when I get it.

So, hey: UFC 2 is okay.

If you played the first: It's More and Better of that. They added a shitton of fighters, they tightened up physics, streamlined the striking and made the ground game much faster but weirder and ultimately harder. If you had any fun with the first game and want more of it, you're fine.

If you didn't play it or need more: It succeeds at being a quick, slightly arcadey representation of MMA, but while the controls are streamlined they still only work particularly well for striking. Grappling, as with every MMA game ever, is kind of a mess: Everything is relegated to single-directional inputs on the right analog stick that are supposed to logically correlate to what would make sense at that moment--i.e., hit Up to posture up or stand up--but they don't actually follow as logically as you'd think for all positions, so unless you memorize what movements are available from what positions you're going to be looking at the on-screen indicators to know what each motion will do instead of the game itself. They also tried to shift to a new system whereby, instead of the first person to hit a button getting to make an attempt to do a grappling action, both characters can engage in grappling motions simultaneously--but it doesn't register your input until the previous set of animations completely finishes, meaning you're timing out the end of animations to start your input first. It's a fast but obtuse system that's super-finicky about timing, and when you combine that with the fact that they greatly improved the striking but left the first game's submission system totally untouched, I feel like they know the vast majority of players just want to kickbox and used their time accordingly.

So the physics are better, the striking is better, the new game modes are cool, knockout mode is hilarious and you can be Sakuraba in three weight classes, but the grappling is still mechanically funky and it's still sort of glitchy. In my first online match I knocked someone down, they ragdolled into the Steve Nelmark position on the cage, the game didn't know what to do and rendered them untouchable for about eight seconds and then they teleported to their feet in mid-headkick on my face.

Also my Ultimate Team team is anchored by 5'11" 45 year-old paunchy middleweight former TV star Tim "The Buzzsaw" Taylor, who grunts and rubs his belly after he knocks a man out.

I played a disturbing amount of online matches in the previous 4 UFC games, and while I miss UFC 3's Pride mode a lot, the new UFC game definitely seems to have more intriguing systems in place for their online modes.

Ultimate Team (where you earn coins for fighting/having a team, and then use these coins to buy card packs that include various stat boosts, new maneuvers, etc.) is the first game mode that's made me actually want to play as user-created fighters online. I made a tae kwon do specialist and debuffed most of her ground stats in order to get slightly more kicking power, but then I got a 4-starred wrestling slam a la Matt Hughes, so now she's blasting doubles to get out of trouble.

And the amount of fighters in regular ranked mode is probably going to keep it fresh for me for a long time, especially since it gives you an incentive to switch it up by making 5 random fighters earn you a bonus for using them every day. You also get a bonus for using a weaker character, although the bonus is pretty insignificant. The learning curve for the ground game does seem a lot higher than in the last game, they really need to make the muay thai clinch a bit less dangerous (you block knees with the button usually reserved for blocking body shots, meaning it's a 50/50 shot of you getting kneed or elbowed whenever you wind up there and go to block the first shot, and the clinch elbows in this game are very effective), and glitches like resetting fights or your fighter being unable to put their guard up for a few seconds for no reason are pretty bad, but I have high hopes. Unless I get stuck in the equivalent of the red belt division from the last game, where you basically had to play as Aldo, Jones, Holm, etc. to have any sort of fighting chance, I think I'm going to have a lot more fun with this one than I did EA UFC 1.

They also put silly stuff like "go get some, Donald Ce-rro-nay!", "Hamderlei Silva", etc. in the game, so +1 for that.

Mar 16: Alternate Loading Screens

A new folder called Loading has been added to the Skins folder which can hold any number of custom loading screen designs. When the game starts its between-days loading process it will pick a random file from this folder and use that as the background.

Mar 16: Free Picture Years

The Free Pictures files, used when assigning pictures to freshly generated characters, now includes optional earliest and latest possible dates that restrict when the picture is valid. This allows some pictures to only appear during the appropriate era.

They (sorta) refined the striking, but the biggest overhaul was on the grappling side. What are they supposed to do with submissions? I don't think there's been a submission system in any of the UFC games that everyone could agree was a good one. The circle chase is very mini game-y, but I don't really mind it.

I like UFC 2. The KO mode is fun, even though I thought it was just going to be the regular game with grappling disabled. Speaking of grappling, I'm still trying to figure that out. Especially on my career guy, it seems unfair. I have to tilt the stick and spend stamina to change position, the AI just instantly transitions without stamina cost.

Jul 5, 2010
Don't try to transition out if you've taken a punch. It'll interrupt your transition meter and put you at a momentum disadvantage, so that if you try to transition out again, you're guaranteed to get you punched more. Block a strike, then immediate pick a transition, preferably the quickest one available--if someone is in your half guard, for example, it's faster to transition back to guard than it is to try to take someone's back.

I'm still learning the ground game, and I don't know how to deny anything that isn't transition to half guard, side control or mount, but at this point I feel less at risk on the ground than I do standing.

Well, if everyone is beating you, you probably are pretty terrible right now! I was terrible at every other UFC game when they first came out, losing a lot more than I won to start out with. This game in particular is ridiculously complicated, so it's no wonder that it'll take a while to figure out the ground game and the clinch. The clinch has been essential to my (admittedly limited) success because of the variety of takedowns and strikes it has available. Try playing a bit of Ultimate Team. Your opponents will have the same limited abilities as you to start with, plus you can delete a character if you're not happy with their build or you feel like their record has become unsightly. I'm not doing too hot in the regular ranked mode, losing about half my matches, but I'm also playing as lower ranked characters. In Ultimate Team I have a 29-6 guy, so I feel it's a lot easier to win there.
