I don't want to spoil too much of the story, but this is not a horror story (and especially not one for the sake of horror), though the story lines go *deep* when they hit their low points. Everything happens for a reason that is decidedly not "get a psychopath off", and it's definitely not lose-lose. Particularly VLR is more "'Primer' with higher stakes".

Yeah Saw is dumb torture porn whereas Zero Escape looks like that at first glance but is more about building up towards big twists and eventually learning about plot mysteries.

zero escape has a dark horror atmosphere, but in 999 it's less about the super violence and more about being tense as poo poo, and virtue's last reward breaks it constantly to have the characters do goofy poo poo when they aren't facing any immediate crisis
