Hi, I am again looking to make a trade.

I have the #3 pick which means either Babe Ruth or Ted Williams. However, I need 2B , 3B and high level relievers more than I need a god-tier OF who doesn't play great defense. So if you want a Ruth or Williams, make an offer or talk to me in the IRC

I have a young Alex Centaur Rodriguez who has played 3B for me, plus Aroldis Chapman and a plethora of corner outfielders, as well as my own draft pick, that could be offered for that pick. I also have a young Eddie Mathews and younger Mike Schmidt who don't perform as well at 3B sometimes, and a Robinson Cano at 2B who is still relatively new to the Super League but hasn't done badly. PM me if any of these names pique your interest, or just post in the thread.

This was the last package for a pick that'd get Babe Ruth.

Now, I'll grant that the league is different 1 season later, team needs are different, resources are different, and the #3 pick in this draft may end up being Ted Williams and not Babe Ruth.

But despite the fact I'm a really crappy judge of trades and player value and team building, I'm pretty sure anyone with the top 3 picks shouldn't sell for much less than the kind of package above. And if any of those teams are unable to find a suitor and end up with Babe Ruth or Ted Williams...that's not really a problem.

For the record, I later flipped that 15th pick for the 63rd pick, Deacon Phillippe, and Robin Yount. I think the 44th turned into... Jeff Reardon, maybe? Point is, I turned that one Potential Babe Ruth (tm) into 8 players - none of which approached a Babe Ruth in value individually, but almost all of which did Good Things (tm) for my team - or at least, none of which failed to be an improvement over the dross I had beforehand. Some people will still claim I got rooked, but given the season's results - a very respectable finish in a division that had the god drat Killer Mikes in it - I think it worked out pretty drat well.

In my admittedly limited Super-League experience, having One Amazing Player is a luxury; it is more important to have Twenty Decent Players. The output of a Babe Ruth doesn't necessarily make up for the lack of output you'll get from dudes who are bad. My plan has been to get a decent foundation, try to stay alive, and see if we can put together a package for someone else's Ruth-level picks somewhere down the road.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say "twenty decent players."

The Space Fish are full of decent players with not a star among them, and what that gets you is a .500 record at best.

shepard.shouldgo
Feb 2, 2016

My current view is that I will NEVER be in a better position than I am now( #3 overall pick , relatively strong starting pitching, a good closer, locked down at a number of spots) meaning I can happily take a Ruth/Williams and have it improve my team. In other words, this pick is not going to be cheap and will probably take Collins/Gehringer/Papelbon level players and maybe a draft pick. I could consider throwing something in to even out a trade slightly (though for the record, Triss Speaker is not for sale).

It turns out that having a Mantle and/or Musial made for my worst teams, the Corruption and Sad Pandas. Superstars are a luxury that can't guarantee anything. My teams now are built on finding good fits for each position rather than the gaudiest numbers.

Then again a Ruth almost single-handedly dragged my wife's team out of the Subpar League so there is that. Sometimes Babe Ruth IS the player you desperately need to fill a Reggie Jackson sized hole in your lineup!

I'd have taken the two deals listed below in a heartbeat. Cobb, a great starter, a great reliever, and an adequate replacement for Ruth? That's pretty good if you needed a better CF, and everyone could use a good starter/reliever. The Mines trade wasn't a travesty, but it was a little bit dicier since the ages of some of those names were bad (Foxx is too old, Jackson too young), and Phillippe is solid but not elite. If he could have squeezed a good modern reliever out of it I'd say that'd be great. Still, McGraw and Carew are fine bats to get, and on the whole it's a rolling the dice on 6 could-be-very-good guys across multiple positions instead of taking one "oh yeah he's great" corner outfielder.
