When CIG does it, nobody opens their mouth cos they'll get banned. But of course, in Elite, it's a game and they have to deliver. In SC, it's an alpher you just don't understand game development.

They're mocapping all possible playthroughs of all the possible players of the final game (it's a short list). When you hit a key, the game actually plays a prerecorded mocapped animation of you doing what you were intending to. It's a new feature coming in 2.4. Chris said yes.

I can't even put it into words, it's on another level from anything I have ever done in a game. I flew down to a moon and the terrain just kept coming, I aimed for a small crater and eventually flew the width of it and it took about 15 minutes to cross. The scale of this thing is immense. I flew to the bottom of it and could no longer see the sky, what I thought was a small crater (and it was from afar compared to the ones around it) had slopes the size of Everest. I will upload a vid, it is impossible to do it justice though. Edit: It didn't record peter gabriel fucked around with this message at 01:54 on Mar 20, 2016 |

Thoatse posted:Star Citizen - Where the Alpha triples every second Back in the early PC days, the "sim" genre commonly reduced your view to "simulate" the view from inside a cockpit, car, etc. You'd have limited visibility through the windshield, see your steering wheel turn, etc. But the primary reason for all that poo poo was to reduce the area that the PC had to create animation in. If you only have to draw the action in a tiny window the fraction of the size of the monitor, you can squeeze out more performance. Nowadays, with fully 3D environments, this 2D rendering performance trick has become irrelevant. So restricting your view to create "immersion" is an autist's approach. The reason is something I've mentioned more than once ITT, but I'll mention it again for any recent members who don't want to read a lifetime of posts. The human brain edits out information it doesn't need. It's why people who wear glasses don't see the frames around their vision after a few days of first getting them. It's why the extraordinarily restrictive view of a motorcycle helmet becomes completely irrelevant once you subconsciously move your head around more often to compensate. It's why when you go from driving a big truck, or a Jeep, for a few years, then sit in a sports car, you feel blind as gently caress - but only for a little while. After a few days, a million little subconscious adjustments restores your view to normal, and you don't even notice it any more. Little things like moving your face closer to the window, or leaning to one side when checking the blind spot, etc. Humans do this naturally. In a game, this is impossible. You can't lean in closer, or crane your neck around, or do any natural movement to restore your view. These cockpit views do not in any way take into account human physiology - it's no different than taping cardboard cutouts to your monitor. They're an obstruction, and nothing more. The proof in the pudding is Elite: Dangerous when experienced in VR. Once all those natural movements are usable in the game, suddenly the sense of visibility and scale explodes. Something SC can never have due to "immersion" factors. There is literally no limit to how many different ways Chris Roberts has royally hosed up this game.
