Just want to be thankful for what must truly be a thankless effort. The GW social media team has called for questions to be asked for an upcoming FAQ for Warhammer 40,000. The response has been a mix of helpful questions, asinine questions, wishlisting, griping, mocking, and general internet lambasting of their efforts.

I, for one, am just happy they are doing it and am looking forward to the results. I do not envy the moderator of that thread. Good lord, what an undertaking. To be sure, that particular servitor gets a salary, but the fortitude required to maintain one's sanity in the face of such a barrage would make even an Imperial Fist blush. Surely, a beer would help; perhaps more than one.

To that end, I have decided to start this lighthearted effort to show some appreciation and just buy the guys and gals at GW HQ a beer. Or three.

100% of Donations will go towards beer for GW development team members and their compatriots in social media. A member of our gaming group (Faultline40k) will be traveling to Nottingham in April and will personally oversee the disbursement of funds to pubs in the area. His trip was already planned, and has already been paid for, and he will be purchasing his own libations. Again, 100% of donations will go to the poor sod who undertook this thankless task. Thank you, whoever you are. Have a beer. Or three.

Also, at this point, there's so many nebulous rules interactions that I don't think they could offer a faithful tabletop computer game. You need something like vassal where you make it up as you go.

The bigger question is: Why would you even want a faithful recreation of the tabletop game? The best part of the tabletop experience are the models and tactile experience--the "game" itself is actually pretty bad and its best aspects will be lost in a PC version. If you were creating a PC game experience, you'd be much better off removing or abstracting huge areas of the game, like rolling to hit/wound/save, handling cover/line of sight, etc. At that point, you'd also likely want to just create Dawn of War or DoW 2.

I mostly asked because me buying and painting the models, buying and studying the books, and finding places to play within driving distance isn't much of an option. Warhammer will always be an experience I have to enjoy from afar.

I tried watching a match online when I first tried to wrap my head around the game. I heard it'd take 4-7 turns tops so I thought, you know, that's a short board game that won't take long. A half hour of awkward silence later and I was wondering when they were going to get to the Fireworks Factory and play the drat game.

Speaking of video games, Battlefleet Gothic Armada is really fun, and seems to have done a good job with managing to turn the turn based tabletop game into an RTS without losing the feel, at least in my opinion. (Though I haven't played BFG in years. I do hope that they bring it back)

They exist, somewhere and possibly do things. I dunno, I haven't played to the point in the campaign were they appear, mainly because there is no save/load function on the campaign yet. (It is currently in open beta as of a week ago and they haven't implemented that function yet.)

As of right now it is just Imperial vs Chaos, as it is in Beta and they want to make sure things work properly. Imperial has the advantage currently, so you will play a lot of IN vs IN matches in multiplayer, but it is a lot of fun, and you can still win with Chaos. Eldar and Orks are coming soon, they are just trying to adjust some balance things in the technical test first since apparently Orks are a bit too powerful or something like that.

Based on some datamining that someone did, this is the info found for Eldar.(shamelessly stolen from Perestroika in the BFG:A thread)

quote:

Alaitoc: Stricter than any other Craftworld, most Eldar from Alaitoc choose to wander the galaxy as Rangers. As a consequence, Alaitoc is considered a specialist in surprise attacks and is destructive behind enemy lines.
Cameleoline alloy - As long as the ship isn't moving, it is considered hidden, not even appearing as a bleep on long range scanners. Short range scanners still detect the ship.
Pathfinder webway assault - The ship sends a Ranger strike team, causing critical damage automatically. Can target a ship with its shield active.

Biel-Tan: Biel-Tan Eldar are the fiercer of their kins. Believing that destruction of a lesser species is critical for the dawn of the new Eldar Empire, this Craftworld contains numerous Aspects Warriors, and Kaela Mensha Khaine, the Eldar god of War, is revered both in battle and in daily life.
Aspect Warriors - Aspect Warriors add {0} assault actions to Boardings.
Avatar of Khaine - The Avatar of Khaine replaces the basic Lightning Strike. This action cannot be performed on a ship which still has its shield up. The Avatar of Khaine adds {0} assault actions to the Lightning Strike. The Avatar of Khaine's chances of dealing critical damage to the targeted ship are based on its troop value.

Saim-Hann: Specialized in hit-and-run tactics using fast units and crippling their foes, the Eldar of Saim-Hann are often seen by their enemies, but generally only seconds before their death.
Ambusher - As long as the ship is hidden, its attacks inflict {0}% their normal damage.
Phantom Disruption - The enemy ship's scanners within {0} units are crippled and have their detection range reduced by {1}% for {2} Seconds.

Ulthwe: Located near the Eye of Terror, the Ulthwe Craftworld has seen its population becoming more and more proficient in the use of psychic abilities, with surges of many Warlocks and Farseers able to see the future more clearly than any other Craftworld's Farseers, and thus reacting more quickly to threats not even already here.
Psychic Blockade - Disturbing enemy teleportation, the ship's troop value is increased by {0}% against Lightning strikes.
Maelstrom - The ship invokes a storm of raw psychic energy within {0} units. The Maelstrom inflicts {1} Hull Damage per second to ships in it. The damage dealt by the Maelstrom ignores its target's armour. Warning: the Maelstrom can hit your own ships!

In any case, you can get in on the Beta, and if you do so you get the Space Marine fleet for free at some point, rather than as DLC.

Well, they're right, releasing a video game adaptation of the tabletop game would be the end of them. People would be able to experience the game mechanics without dropping 3-500 dollars.

Edit: that said, tabletop simulator has a bunch of 40k modules if you really want.

Imagine a cheap (in terms of what you initially pay for it) tabletop conversion, with snazzy graphics, accurate models and faster dice rolls and rules that are automated. Then let new players start off with only an Ultramarine army of like, 500 points. You can customize it, but you only have access to certain models.

Want to play with a higher point level? That's a payin'. Want to play a different chapter? That's a payin. You want custom skins? You better believe that's a payin'. And then there's the idea of purchasing units and wargear instead of unlocking them via in-game actions, or purchasing other races if you want more than the standard stuff. And of course, custom army boxes or stands where you can line up all your fake plastic men just like you would in real life, for all to see just how much money you spent on them.

There's tons of ways GW can make you pay out the nose, to the tune of a few hundred bucks, if golden mechs in Mechwarrior Online are any indication. They just don't have the business savvy to do it.

Edit: Gold plated Titans. Think about it.

The GW Facebook page should have two open, unmoderated posts: one for non-Tau, non-Eldar xenos players to scream and share pictures of themselves hurling gorkanaut kits against the wall and vent a decade's worth of anti-support from the rules team; and one post for the smug, arms-folded grognards to sneer the words "little Timmy" or a similar strawman for younger players over and over again until the phrase loses meaning, like chewed gum loses its taste.

Then we can begin to heal.

You're thinking of normal Guard HQ tanks. Armored Battlegroup is a bit of a different beast-it's Forge World's "You want tanks? HAVE SOME loving TANKS" army, where treads are cool and mans are dumb. HQ units? Tanks. Elites? How about Commissar Tanks? Troops? Tanks, duh. Fast Attack? We got fast tanks. Heavy Support? Oh, you know we got tanks. Unfortunate it predates the point and rules adjustments from IG's 6th edition codex, and since Forge World hasn't bothered issuing an FAQ it's not quite as good as it once was* (Especially since Guard can just take formations of tanks now that are cheaper and get special rules), but it's still got some nasty, nasty surprises for anyone who's not familiar with it. Twin-Linked Beast Hunter Shells :unsmigghh:

Anyway, what the original question is referring to is the fact that HQ Leman Russes (Which are singular tanks in AB) can issue orders to nearby tanks similar to Guard CCSs, though the mechanics are a bit different and two of the three available orders aren't actually very good.

But to respond to the actual question:

The Kingfish posted:

Rules question: Can an Armored Battlegroup Tank Commander issue an order to himself?

Yes, the Orders rule in the 5th ed Guard Codex explicitly states that a unit issuing an order can give it to themselves.

*Edit: I feel I should mention that the previous incarnation of Armored Battlegroup from 5th Edition was positively disgusting and an absolute joy to play. +20 point upgrade for any tank with an ordnance weapon (Including artillery) to get an additional shot if they didn't move? I meant the Chaos one. apparently in the tabletop version (never played it), where if a Chaos ship misses two shots in a row, or something similar and your flagship commander is Abaddon, his ship has to shoot that ship. And if his ship fails twice in a row, then it takes one point of damage, (or crew-loss damage if that's a thing) as he and his marines are throwing a tantrum and splattering their normal cultist crewmen across the decks.
