Homie, for your own sake, I'm going to let you in on some knowledge. Women and likely most men would probably express themselves sexually in a healthy way significantly more if they felt they were safe and respected and that they could give enthusiastic consent. If they weren't subject to "boner-rage" (sp?) so to speak.

The biggest barrier to living in a culture where women get their gently caress on on a regular basis is the general attitude of men that women are objects to be taken advantage of against their consent and the tacit agreement of other men to normalize that idea.

Are you cool, dog?

A Horse Named Mandy posted:

Saw the SF show with girlfriend, who hadn't listened to anything beyond the craigshouse compilation. She found Seth funny, but just couldn't stand Jonathan. We were talking about it afterwards, and she described him as completely devoid of any understanding of the moral or political implications of his statements or actions. That show in particular, he casually threw out "human being" in SF on the eve of pride week, not to mention a couple n-bombs.

I admit sometimes I lose patience with Jah's shtick, but for the most part, I usually enjoy listening to the guy digging himself deeper, on a Karl Pilkington-like level, especially when Seth is there to give him poo poo and steer the conversation in the right direction. Still, she was saying how she only found him offensive, and I suddenly remembered the episode where he sexually assaulted a girl (ep. 70, 7:30). I went back to listen, and he outright admits to raping a classmate while high on weed and coke, almost as an aside to another story, and laughing the whole time. Seth even calls him out on it, keeping it light as he can. The closest Jah comes to acknowledging anything was wrong is when she didn't respond to him on myspace many years later.

So yeah, I have to agree with her: at some point the incorrigible doofus who yells at bank tellers and likes dogs more than people really stops being a clown and starts being a disgusting rear end in a top hat.

I'm torn about this because I love UYD, but had to stop midway through the last episode. I know a large part of the show is them talking about hosed-up poo poo that went down in the past, but while Seth's stories are mostly history and now he gets to go on the best rants about sobriety, Jonathan is unrepentant and still loving up (like the implied but not confirmed incident of drunk driving a couple months ago) and generally being a dick.

I'm mentioning this because I want to hear some other fans thoughts about this. Maybe it's all supposed to be an indulgent exploration of white male American culture, but in that case, be careful about listening to it with any sociology grad students with an emphasis on race and gender.

A Horse Named Mandy posted:

Indefensible; that's the word I was grasping at. When she asked why I just paid $60 dollars for the two of us to listen to a rapist, I found it pretty hard to justify on the spot.

Honestly, I knew it would be a derail to bring it up, but I didn't want an argument; I brought this to the thread because I want to keep listening, and just needed some outside perspective. I'd hate to think I have to turn it off or fast forward whenever Jah starts saying poo poo I disagree with, because half the time his rants are great.

I love referencing the time he went to traffic court and was surrounded by degenerates. Then he mentions how Seth would never end up there because he's borderline-OCD levels of paranoid, and how in Jah's opinion, life has gotten so complicated these days that that's the bare minimum amount of effort required not gently caress something up. So your only options in modern life are to be constantly stumbling, or drive yourself crazy trying to stay on top of it all. That's a savant like insight that could only come from somebody so used to dropping the ball talking with, well, whatever amazing personality Seth is.

And I think that speaks to the strength of the duo and the podcast as a whole; they are such a contrasted pairing that works so amazingly well together. Seeing them live was uncanny because the chemistry is so clear, listening to the recordings feels exactly like being right there in the room with them. Some of you hit the nail on the head; it isn't about either individual, who've both admitted to past discretions, but this huge thing they've built together, started because they wanted to be better people.

Also, Cortez, if you don't care if a comedian rapes women, gently caress off and watch the Cosby Show. Later, fruits! *peels out*

JethroMcB posted:

Nooooo, thread, don't kid yourselves. Jonathan pretty much admitted to committing a rape, and it wasn't funny or entertaining in the least. "She never responded to my MySpace request!" Well, based on the story you just told? Yeah! No poo poo.

That said, you will compartmentalize and accept things about a person if you enjoy their work or their personality. You'll gleefully lambaste a public figure that you have no connection to for their behavior, but you'll overlook another's if it's convenient. For example, my grandfather was one of my greatest influences in life, and he thought Woody Allen's comedy was beyond compare. He introduced me to Allen's work during a formative period in my adolescence and, as a result, "Love and Death," "Bananas," "Take the Money and Run," "Sleeper," they're among my favorite films of all time. I know the jokes by heart. These days I just swallow hard and ignore the drama of Woody's personal life (and the pedophilia jokes in the films themselves) because those movies mean something to me. I want to recognize their merits and the memory of my grandfather sharing something with me more than I want to recognize the fact that Woody Allen is a goddamn creep who hosed his adopted daughter and is now handsy as poo poo with the pubescent girls who live with him and call him Dad.

I hate the shithead kids of wealthy people who can seemingly get away with anything, and I hate drunk drivers. Jonathan and Seth both fit those descriptions in their pasts. Yet the one hour a week I get to listen to them - even when they are reminiscing about those days - entertains me enough that I can gloss over those histories in my mind. I know it's hypocrisy, dammit, but my solipsistic need to be entertained eventually supersedes my sense of "decency." A Horse Named Mandy, there is almost certainly a celebrity that your girlfriend loves who is/was a loving monster. Hell, just turn on "Thriller." See if her immediate reaction is anything besides "Michael Jackson was a child rapist."

I think the problem is some people want to play a kind of weird Social Justice Bingo with two slightly out of touch L.A dudes who do a pretty innocuous weekly podcast... and I think a lot of other people are flabbergasted by how anyone can listen to more than 2 episodes and not get what they're about.

They don't really seem like hate spitting dudes, and Jonathan definitely says stupid stuff, because he's pretty candid about his life and past (often to hilarious effect).. So when people call in the hate wagon, or demand the thread get the pitchforks and torches because a former lot kid with a gold tooth is using semi-questionable language ...it seems like a bit much? I think if UYD had serious problems, then yeah, there would be issues worth discussing, but it kind of seems like 'here is a chance to soapbox some feminism' which feels weird. I hope this helps.

I don't like using 'gay' and 'retard' myself, but I don't care if two guys on the other side of the world say them.

Both have always seemed at their core good people. And at the end of the day I really like the thing they make - and that far outweighs some questionable language choices.

At a certain point it becomes the 'do you judge art for the artist', and I generally don't, with some exceptions. I find it difficult to enjoy Chinatown the same way anymore because of what a sociopath Roman Polanski is. He raped a teenager a few decades ago and now sues journos who bring it up for defamation, but appears in court via Skype because if he went there physically he'd be extradited. What a piece of poo poo that guy is.

Everyone has different tolerances for what they're willing to accept before dismissing a person's work.
