It's between 4 and 5 for the most content, though. 4 is a tighter experience in a single city, 5 is more scattershot and you'll have to drag yourself through some sequences that kind of suck in order to resume city trippin'. 5 also requires a tolerance for rhythm games.

5 also has the prison break/mountain stuff which might test the patience of a newcomer who's made it through Taxi Man. Go with 4 as your first. If you don't like it after Akiyama's quarter you won't like any of the others. And it'll at least introduce you to Daigo and company in a way that might make sense. And all the plot from the previous games is available in the reminisce section. Hey you never know, you might get into the plot.

Kazuma Kiryu: Responsible Taxi Driver was more fun for me than basically anything in Seajima's section. Also, Haruka's segment would be better if it were shorter or had more songs. It just started grating on me after awhile.

After putting it down for a while I'm playing Kiwami again and boy I'm really tired of the Majima segments. Go away. Like I can live with the ones where there is some goofy skit but he also randomly accosts you on the street and jumps into random encounters and it's not really interesting; he's just a sponge that takes too long to kill.

I'm about to play Yakuza 4 for the first time, and it's basically thanks to this forum that I even have a conception of the series. Akiyama has the best drat outfit. Kazuma's is classic, but I just can't not love purple suit jackets.

I was partial to Tanimura's style myself. Akiyama is cool and all, and Kiryu will always feel classic and familiar, but I really like what they did with Tanimura.

I liked how it was different enough, and parrying moves was a blast. Shinada just didn't ever click for me in the way that Tanimura did.

I like how one of Tanimura's side missions is to beat up a jumper so he can't jump off the building. I like how with a HEAT move you can toss the guy off the building and win the fight

Maybe I need to go back and play Tanimura again, but he didn't really leave much of an impression when I played through 4. Admittedly at that point I just wanted to get through it so I didn't play all his side missions and such. i liked how you could arrest people though.
