I'm flying back to Iceland on Monday after having been home in Denmark for classes, it feels weird. I really like the place and I'm lucky enough to have some great colleagues where I apprentice but since I'm also an antisocial goon it's also a bit isolating. Hopefully living in Keflavik instead of Grindavik (I like Grindavik but it's really tiny) will help on that front. I have to decide if I want to sign on for another year so here's hoping everything works out great :)

I would love doing that. Though I've always been more of a vodka man, I definitely dig some of the, I suppose you'd call them "gimmicky" bourbons, like the honey and cherry ones.

Would be amusing also to take pics from where the Colonel was born or some such thing; KFC is huge in Iceland, probably because it was the first fried chicken joint here and has maintained a standard of quality that hasn't really been matched by any other outfit here.

Alas, I won't be able to travel for a while due to finances.

Keflavík has it's nice sides, I have some family that lives there and lived there for about a year. But it's a very corrupt and badly run town.

There used to be a place called Santa Karamba downtown which was pretty good and I think operated and owned by actual Mexicans. They either moved or went of business because they aren't there anymore. Culiacan is alright but it's more of a health restaurant with Tex-Mex dishes than a full on Mexican place. There is a place called Taqueria which I think is supposed to be pretty good but I haven't tried it.

Finding good Thai restaurants on the other hand is pretty easy since they are all over the place, Krua Thai in particular is very good. Same for Middle Eastern places especially fast food kebab joints like Habibi. Oddly enough there aren't many Polish restaurants despite Poles being the biggest immigrant group.

Taqueria is good and if its not run by the same dudes that did Santa Karamba they copied their menu loving exactly, down to not having quesadillas for some godawful reason.

Your assessment of Culican is far too kind. It is bad. It is poo poo. We are talking people that do not realize that a quesadilla should not be a loving soggy mess with barely any cheese or fire.

My spouse and I absolutely love OMAM, they have been our favorite band for a couple of years now. Sadly, we couldn't see them in concert when they came to Texas last year due to a scheduling conflict. It is on our bucket list to see them live in Iceland, seriously. They are just such a great group, we love that the band is so big and has so many instruments going at any given time, and the imagery from all of this Nordic mythology is really cool.

TL;DR: OMAM fangirl on the internet thinks they're just great.

A few. A lady that married for love and stayed for her kid. A anarchosyndicalist who had a similar story. I know more Filipinos and Englishmen than Americans tbh.

Americans are classified as non-European immigrants and so y'all are allowed in here if you're married to an Icelander, tourists or get "high level" work. This means that you can't be sourced either in Iceland or the EU, which is uhh, not simple.
I honestly have no idea what specific skills are hot these days. The usual? (Healthcare, high level programming/finance?)

That's nice. If I meet Kristján again I'll tell him I guess, he and I used to be friends, though we drifted apart after going our separate ways before Junior College. I did some voice-acting for Árni, the guy who quit early, too.

The rest I don't really know or am not on friendly terms with; Arnar for instance was dating one of my lazy, lovely bosses at a time that was related to Kristján, so whaevs.

Hey, I was directed here from the Scandinavian thread in SAL. I've written a fictional novel that's very close to ready to being sent to agents and publishers. One of the primary settings in the story takes place in the Faroe Islands and the story uses a handful of Faroese sentences, and I was wondering if you or anyone that speaks the language could help me out. It's very difficult to find information on it!

For obvious reasons and purposes, the story is written in English, so there aren't many Faroese words. 22 words spread across a whopping 4 sentences. I recall reading that Icelandic is structurally similar to Faroese, but they're hardly 1:1. If you or anyone could help me out, hit me up in PMs, or I could just post more details here. And if not, thanks for your time anyway.

In the Icelandic news follow-up to the expose, the anchorwoman asks historian and author Guðni Th. Jóhannesson to share his opinion and analysis of the revelations. I made a gif of the moment where he, without any words, perfectly encapsulates how I, and probably a lot of other Icelanders, feel about the situation[She's asking him "What do you think stands out from what was revealed in the expose?"]:

Theese people were the ones who enabled the big banks and subsequent 2008-crash in the first place. They only recently got elected again after being ousted post-crash by a leftist coalition by promising free money and relying on a large portion of the populace with a pathological inability to vote for any party but the Independence party(think "independents" who vote straight ticket Republican).

Mebe, the loud chant is "Vanhæf Ríkistjórn" or "incompetent government".

And now the former PM has resigned in favour of one of his toad-morph buddies. Not good enough, according to most of the country still, but protests of 22K+ compared to 1K+ now means it might work.

It's up to the Sjallar, they have to weigh their options of propping up Farm-sókn, and going behind their two ministers found in the cookie jar, Ólöf and Bjarni or trying for the gold, leveraging their nigh guaranteed 33% to go into government with either Björt Framtíð (hah!) or the Pirates(double hah!).
Bjarni being the head of their party means that the arguably "better" option of just leaving Framsókn to dry and loving them over isn't as attractive, as Bjarni has just finished strengthening his position again within the party.

The left wing parties, well. Samfylkingin in still unprepared; they haven't had the new chairman vote and Árni is still a albatross around their neck, with a lot of propaganda still working against them. VG is as it ever was, while Katrín is popular, she isn't going to appeal to any voters they didn't have earlier. So Bjarni has to wonder if now might not be the time to strike, while they and the centre parties are being kept out.

Björt Framtíð is a non-entity at this point, only drawing the votes of Samfylkingar people that don't wanna associate with the toxic brand and the right-wingers that don't want to associate with Framsókn or Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn. Framsóknarflokkurinn still have their countryside support, they would likely lose almost all their non-racist city support.

Considering the pirates are roughly split between the original left-leaning founding core and the libertarians that have been growing in prominence (as well as a few rebel types), it's very possible they could form government with Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn. The Pirates as individuals might care about various issues, but a bunch of the prominent positions are filled with people practically out of the Sjálfstæðisflokks youth league.

I think it would be utterly hilarious if they ever actually won government, seeing as they don't have actually well thought out positions on foreign affairs, taxes, welfare aside from "possibly a universal income?" and education. They have a lot of the protest vote in polls, but there's no way to see if it would extend into actual votes.

I wanna say they're the Trump vote, basically, vote if you´re ignorant as hell, super right wing or just wanna watch the country burn, but that's too unkind, as they do still have their now parliamentary veterans and some of their issues are non-loathsome.

See, what saves these pirates is that there is a core of actual, experienced people; it started with Birgitta, who is good and left wing and saved the party, and then you have people like Helgi Hrafn, who I disagree with on almost everything and personally dislike but I can admit he's principled and at least does some good things.

Birgitta, especially, has stopped the party from being a joke, which is why she makes so many lolberts in the party mad. Those people are honestly little different to the young republicans or any other right-wing youth league; lots rich, white, privileged people that think "Freedom" is the most important thing in the world.
