Cool. I'm going with a bunch of friends who have been there before, but just trying to look up stuff about everything. Weather in June should be fairly warm I'm guessing.

Planning a trip for late August with a bunch of friends. We are a bunch of middle aged, married folk planning to do it up cheap, gamble at cheap tables, get drunk, hang out at the pool, ect. A couple questions:

1) I have been before and stayed on strip and never made it to downtown. Generally, is there any reason to stay downtown or is it better to just cab it over for one day to say I went there? I want to see the Fremont experience and the container mall at least and probably find some cheaper tables.

2) Any recommendations on places to stay with good pool options. Obviously August is an awful time to go so we will want to spend lots of time in the pool.

3) When I was there years ago I could never find craft beer on the strip. I assume this has gotten better. Any casinos with decent beer, brewery, and/or beer bar recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

1) If you don't get comped rooms then downtown is cheaper to stay. That is the only reason to stay there.

2) MGM Grand. They also have a lazy river.

3) I'm not really up on local beers there. If I want a craft beer I usually go to the Chandelier bar at the Cosmo and get Ballast Point which isn't local to Vegas.

Downtown is a bit more raw than the strip and cheaper.

I'd vote staying on the strip and cabing downtown for a few hours.

Golden nugget has a cool pool and is downtown and cheap.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AphGhUpPJ1A)

So you can eat cheap, gamble cheap, etc.
They also have a 21+ pool.

That said, Mandalay Bay has a wave pool and lazy river. Monte Carlo does too but Mandalay will be nicer.

Mandalay also has a top-ional pool club.

Mandalay is far away though, next nothing cool.

Pub at Monte Carlo is good suggestion for craft beer. There's Banger Brewing downtown. Four queens also has a brewpub thing I had last time that was ok, as does apparently Main Street Station.

I'd maybe stay downtown. Do things downtown during the day and then go out for dinner and stuff on the strip at night?

I guess it really depends how much strip stuff you wanna do. It sounds like you might be of the downtown mindset.

If you want to casino hop and low roll (i.e. $15 bets or lower) then downtown is great. Golden Nugget is plenty good and yet 30% cheaper than comparable properties on the strip.

Main station has an on site brewery which is pretty good. They serve the beers at the casino bar for $1.75 so it's worth a shot

There's a craft whisky/beer bar at the container park, so you can combine number 1 and 3.

There is a Yardhouse in the alley by the Linq, it may be a chain but they have all the craft beer you could possibly need. There is a pizza place directly across from it that had a good beer selection too.

I've never understood the allure of going to the strip and then being cheap. You can't "do it up cheap" on the strip, and there are so many other good places to have a cheap vacation.

Hotels are cheaper on the strip than a lot of other vacation destinations, and flights are often super cheap. You can have a pretty cheap vacation to Vegas if you want, depending on what you want to get out of it. Some people go to Vegas to spend a bunch of money and "live it up." Some people go just to enjoy the spectacle. People have different ideas about what a good vacation is.

Food is pretty expensive though.

That's pretty subjective. You can eat super high end or have some really good meals on the cheap. Just gotta know the right places to go.

Food and Spirts are easily obtainable in Vegas on the cheap. The most costly thing if anything are the flights and hotel.

Flights and lodging for us are super cheap. We can probably do a 4 day Vegas vacation for less than the flights alone to Nashville.

What's the lowest you've gotten tickets and a hotel?

Cascadia Pirate

Flights are usually around $150 round. When I was in college there was a super cheap discount carrier that was even less but I couldn't afford to travel back then. I don't remember what the mirage was last time I stayed but there are lots of dirt cheap places.

Maybe some sort of Lake Mead activity. Show tickets are best purchased elsewhere.

Jay do you have an email I could ask a few questions about an upcoming trip?

We have 15 guys in town the weekend of May 6 and 7 for a bachelor party and the person organizing it seems to think general admission for pool parties and nightclubs is going to work somehow. We are staying at the Cosmo and I've already suggested the all access wristband but the rest might get ugly without the proper planning.

Is Westgate a lovely place to stay? It's the cheapest by a bit on flight+hotel kayak.com option. Not going to be doing much if any gambling just going to be wandering around and taking photos and having drinks.

Other close-in-price options are Circus Circus, The Rio, Ballys, and Harrah's.

Is there a better place to look for flight+hotel deals? Thanks gamblegoons.

Imaduck

The Westgate is pretty far north; It's going to be quite a walk / monorail ride to get to most of the places on the Strip. Circus Circus is pretty far as well. The Rio is nice, but it isn't even on the strip; they have shuttles back and forth from the strip, but it's still kind of a pain.

Harrah's is the only one you've mentioned that I've stayed at. It's in a very good location. The rooms are fine, but not really luxurious in any way, if that's what you're looking for. They're pretty much a standard hotel room in an older building. Totally reasonable if you just want a place to crash, and it has a few inexpensive food options that aren't bad.

Ballys is pretty old, and it's pretty set back from the strip, which means you've got an extra walk every time you want to leave the hotel.

EDIT: One warning: Make sure you're aware of the daily, required "resort fees" wherever you decide to stay. Basically every hotel has them, and it can easily be half the cost of your stay.

Westgate will suck and they will hound you for a timeshare. Off strip but has a monorail stop.

Rio off strip.

Bally's and Harrahs are bleh but I'm sure the rooms are okay for poo poo/shower/sleep. Both have monorail stops (which I like, but a lot of people don't).

Bally's has an OG style pool with actual deep ends so there's that! (Bally's is just the burned up old MGM).

The front of Bally's was under construction last time I was there since they're building yet another giant CVS or Walgreen's on the strip. I dunno if that's finished yet.

Of those hotels the Velocibacon posted, Harrahs is surely the best if for no reason other than location and saved $$$ on cabs/ubers/monorial and saved pounding on your feet.

Speaking of which, definitely seems like Vegas kind of shot itself in the foot by promoting itself as this "shows/food/clubs/drinks/pools/loving" place instead of being all about gambling.

Maybe at some point they'll start giving decent comps again for $100/hand play. Instead of a timeshare dude popping out every 10 feet.

Vegas has been promoting itself as "fun" destination a few years now. Celebrity Daytime Pool Parties are now top grossing entertainment venue.

Peaking at the report those numbers might seem scary but in the business world it's just another loss leader and the entertainment companies make it up with bars, clubs, restaurants, events, etc

Perhaps they'll stop loving with the odds so much. They are facing more and more competition for the gambling dollar all over the US and world, and they've responded with 6:5 blackjack. 2x craps odds, and tight rear end video poker paytables.
