It seems possible that it could be canon, but unlikely. Bruce Wayne is not dead to the public in this world, for one. Alfred seems to be more of a gearhead too.

I think that this is simply a direct sequel to Man of Steel, with that particular brand of DC's flavor of Batman in the role.

Best part of the movie is they kill off superman and now the leading character in the DC universe is Ben Affleck.

No longer he has to play the part of the Daredevil. Sounds like a win for Hollywood.

Also if Lex's entire plan was to trick Batman and Superman into fighting why did he want to make Kryptonite weapons to kill Superman if the Kryptonite was necessary for Batman to Superman? Did he know Batman would know that he had Kryptonite and steal it to make the weapons and so the whole Kryptonite weapon plan was a diverson? If so wtf.

Yep, Lex left a trail of clues about the "White Portuguese" for Batman to follow specifically so he'd steal the kryptonite and finally be able to confront Superman (and then Batman and Superman would have the weapons they needed to defeat Doomsday???). He also threw a party at his house and invited Bruce Wayne because he knew he was the Batman and he knew he'd hack into his database while he was at the house, that's why Bruce found the exact info he needed on Lex's illegal operations but didn't find any info on Lex's other shady poo poo (gaslighting Bruce Wayne, putting a bomb in a wheelchair, supporting an African warlord) which would have given away the rest of his plot. Also that's why he found the info on the other JLA metahumans but none of the info Lex would have obviously been building up about Batman or Superman.

Lex set up the slave trafficking/drug business poo poo just to get Batman on the case and investigating the exact poo poo Lex needed him to investigate in order to let him think he stole the kryptonite from Lex when that was Lex's plan all along.

Batman was Lex's patsy right from the start and he never figured it out. Batman is a goddamn dope in this movie.

Firstly, Superman Returns was originally planned to launch a trilogy that would be either followed or concluded with Superman Vs Batman to unite with Nolan's Batman (remember the superman vs batman billboard in 2007's I am Legend?). But Superman Returns failed to set the world on fire and they ended up shelving those plans and treating Batman as its own thing. Probably because rival studio owned x-men 3, spiderman 3 and fantastic four all underperformed at the same time suggesting that the superhero fad was dying off.

But then disney made the surprise move to buy marvel, which was considered risky at the time because the only characters they retained the rights to weren't considered popular enough to star in films (hilarious in hind sight). With Iron Man's unexpected success and marvel's plans made clear WB decided to restart their DC shared universe this time shooting beyond Vs to the Justice League, leading with a new to film "obscure" character like marvel had done with Iron Man. So they put all their eggs in Green Lanterns basket, sinking a ridiculous amount of money into it only for it to fail massively at both a critical and commercial level, loving them up big time as they had already planned sequels, a bunch of tie in media, and there were hints that Flash movie plans were riding on it as well. They even had a bug budget Green Lantern video game halfway completed that would feature wonder woman's first introduction.

So Green Lantern's failure caused most of their plans to collapse or be downgraded to TV, necessitating a hasty and largely unwanted superman reboot so they could go on to use the guaranteed box office draw of superman vs batman to pin all their justice league lead up on to. Note also that a legal case in 2009 resulted in them being forced into putting a superman movie into production some time before 2011 to avoid being sued for lost revenue.

Without all that and Green Failure I suspect they might have made the better decision to develop justice league characters individually, in which case we probably would have had a Wonder Woman movie instead of Man of Steel. Superman and batman could have been seen or hinted at in the periphery of all the other character's movies (or tv show for aquaman) without needing their own separate introduction, similar to nick fury for marvel but with far more impact on account of being superman and batman. Then superman vs batman could happen after they have already been introduced as friends in the Justice League movie, as an origin story on how they came to be friends and shape each other into the more optimistic portrayals you would want to lesd with in justice league.

Disney didnt decide to buy Marvel until after Marvel had already been well underway with its Avengers plans and had a strict "no interference" clause written in the deal.

Marvel aquired the rights back to their characters on their own and did the movies in house which was amazing at the time. The Incredible Hulk was kind of a miss but when Iron Man hit, Marvel stock went through the roof. There was a detailed timeline of movie releases they had planned for 4 years. Disney bought Marvel during the production of Capatin America and Thor.

the problem is, yeah, warner brothers had multiple aborted launch attempts but that doesn't mean you try and rush into competing with marvel. superman and batman are so iconic you can afford to go slow with them and dc has the advantage that marvel didn't of owning all of their characters (which, hilariously for marvel, turned out to be better for them because it forced them to be more creative). they are going to be behind marvel completely anyway, marvel is literally ahead of them in everything. all of marvel's tv shows and movies are part of the same shared universe. daredevil and punisher and jessica jones are in the same realm as agents of shield, iron man, the incredible hulk and thor. dc isn't. all of warner brother's tv shows are completely disconnected from their film universe. so the flash in the movies is going to be different from the flash tv show, the same with the green arrow and the show gotham.

what marvel did is a result of extreme and careful patience. it also doesn't hap-haphazardly throw out its properties and hands them off to competent skilled people. and despite what people say, they do tend to take risks (like handing off guardians of the galaxy to the loving guy who wrote tromeo and juilet) but still manage to capture a shared aesthetic and feel. they are smart, careful and have a detailed plan for their universe and properties. so you have this well-oiled machine that has been working like this for years. it doesn't even need to fight for all its properties back either, like popular ones such as x-men (though it might eventually get fantastic four back as i doubt fox wants that albatross anymore). as much as people give marvel poo poo, they've still taken a lot of risks (handing off iron man to rdj when he was still a liability, most people forget that). 'oh, they're by the numbers!' yeah, a major studio giving a former drug addict their tentpole movie along with a guy who wrote and directed for troma isn't taking risks. yeah, ok. they can afford to take risks on their smaller budgeted films because they have their big, established tentpoles that they don't need to do so. and everything poised, civil war looks to take batman vs. superman and destroy it, both thematically and story wise. gently caress, even daredevil season 2 did what batman vs. superman was trying to do and did it better.

warner brothers should have taken it slower and realized there was no loving way it was ever going to catch up to marvel despite its set-backs. another part of the problem is using zac loving snyder as your joss whedon. why the gently caress did they think he was a good idea? because he directed a couple of comic movies in the past? a huge part of marvel's strength is taking non-comic book directors and putting them in charge. so now you have what amounts to a fever dream as your foundation to the shared universe. and yeah, the thing is going to make boatloads of money, but with the amount this film has been hyped, i wouldn't expect anything less. it could have been worse than jack and jill and still people would have went to see it, its the 'real' shared dc universe batman. the problem comes with diminishing expectations. pretty much every marvel movie has been quality, perhaps with the exception of iron man 2 and even that wasn't super-awful. the problem is with people buying that hype over and over if your movies constantly turn out to be poo poo.

the only good thing to come out of this is that apparently ben afflek is good as batman and will get his own solo film as loving far away from zac synder as possible, which is where wb should put him. but they probably won't and then justice league will be super-hyped as well and make boat-loads of money. it'll probably be a transformers situation with the synder-wb movies, poo poo reviews yet good money solely on the recognition of the properties.

there is absolutely no way disney is ever getting back x-men short of a decade plus long disaster at fox and with tom rothman gone to sony (who has been busy making ghostbusters and spiderman the worst poo poo levels. seriously, look the guy up. he's a cancer on superhero and sci-fi movies), that's not happening. marvel is using the inhumans to replace the x-men like they did guardians of the galaxy to replace the fantastic four.

the only property that marvel is likely to get back is fantastic four now that the two people who caused the most animosity towards each other at marvel and fox previously are gone. and even then fox might want to try again. besides the fact that marvel has its hands full anyway and doesn't really even need the properties back (don't get me wrong, i am sure it would love to have them. but with the success of deadpool and the other xmen movies, it isn't a possibility).

Fox owns the film rights to X-men heroes and villains. Also the Fantastic Four heroes and villains including Silver Surfer, Galactus, Dr. Doom etc. Basically if they don't make a movie every 7 years with those characters the rights revert back to Marvel.

There was a hilarious low budget 1994 Fantastic Four film that was made strictly to stop that from happening and they never told the actors it would never be released.

Sony has Spiderman film rights but Disney has negotiated deals that are just too good to pass on, that Marvel independently could never have brokered.

the 1994 film wasn't for fox, it was for some german firm who used it as an ashcan to hold onto the rights which were eventually sold/lost. the movie contract that marvel has with fox explicitly states it needs to be a 100% full release with marketing, a set number of theaters and stuff like that. it specifically doesn't allow them to produce an ashcan version just to keep the rights. the reason why ff4 with josh trank was so bad was because seven years was coming up and they needed to make a film. it wasn't planned. that's why a lot of people think that fox will eventually just hand off the rights back to marvel or sell them to disney when the time comes because they simply don't want to pay a hundred plus million for a very very damaged brand.

its the same presumably with xmen, a release at least once every seven years. but since xmen is super profitable this isn't a problem.

I wonder why he even got the job when Watchmen both bombed at the box office and wasn't as faithful as an adaptation as Snyder thinks it is. We've repeatedly in this thread that the best moments of the characters cut out (including one that makes a whole lot more sense than what ended up on screen); the whole background is less an alternate universe where people like Dr. Manhattan and Adrian Veidt have altered but a love song to the 1970s-1980s, with painstakingly-recreated New York grunge and such; and while the squid ending is polarizing to comic fans, it's foreshadowed and aftershadowed in the book and it's better thematically than "U.S. superweapon nukes the capitols of the world on the cusp of WW3". I would even I'd rank the Hamm script a bit higher than the film's ending, just because it kinda got the point of the characters being hosed up and loving up the universe around them, something that Snyder kinda ignored. Outside of 300 and maybe Dawn Of The Dead (which, as you've pointed out, was written by Guardians Of The Galaxy's James Gunn), he really hasn't a success, but they gave him Man Of Steel, which went to show everyone that he really didn't understand these characters.

Yeah, the X-Men are being quietly sidelined. For instance, there was another Secret Wars crossover where the X-men teams, I think save Wolverine, and the Fantastic Four were left out of. They even brought Miles Morales Spiderman from the collapsed Ultimates Universe and brought him in to the mainstream Marvel Universe, supposedly as a spite to Sony (even though I don't know what's going on with Marvel Uni. Keep Autism Wired posted:

would batman v superman be enjoyable if you were severely under the influence?
I was drinking the whole time and laughed really hard at the unintentional comedy, like when the unarmed homeless man with no legs climbed the superman statue and the two cops are like, "OH GOD WE NEED BACKUP HERE NOW!"

It's all garbage and it's terrible.

They wanted to reveal the extent of Lex's plans to the film audience in the back half of the movie so they needed some way of delaying the reveal that Lex was behind all that stuff in Africa.

If it actually had any repercussions in the film itself then that scene was probably edited out, so maybe all this poo poo will make more sense in the extended directors cut that they're apprently going to release on DVD.

Lol since batman knew exactly where the Russians were why didn't he just tell superman where Martha was? That's like a six second problem for superman. Why isn't superman as dialed in on his mom as he is with Lois? Lois is pounding quietly on a collapsed wall underwater and he can hear her in the middle of a fight with doomsday. Also why is the mother of superman working in a goddamn diner? Why isn't she under constant surveillance and protection? There's a senate committee about him and no one thought "maybe we need to make sure his mom doesn't get kidnapped."

Why the gently caress didn't superman give the spear to Wonder Woman? Also was Wonder woman ever that powerful? Didn't she just get kidnapped all the time.

What the gently caress was happening in the car chase scene? Like I couldn't tell at all. Just a horrific cgi blur.

I really didn't mind Luthor. Again, I think it's fine when people try something extreme or new. Having him be some silicone valley poo poo heel could have been cool if they just reeled him in a little.

Affleck was pretty good I thought. Definitely wanted more of him in the movie. Superman was boring just like man of steel.

It's all Snyder. He just doesn't get it at loving all. If we could redo the final fight scene so that it's possible to tell what's going on and not just have it "large monster screams and shoots laser" there's like a solid just under two hour movie here. We're bitching about shoehorning in a million people but the real problem was pacing. Just constant slow cringe inducing "feelings" scenes that did nothing but further break up an already clunky disaster.

Also lol at batman doing Crossfit

the whole lex getting the alien technology was clunky as hell. why not just let him have taken control of metropolis in the wake of the last movie (rebuilding, whatever) and superman being too dumb to realize what was happening. You could even introducing wayne corp having tried to do the exact same thing and failing to set up that batman knows exactly what lex is doing and hates superman for not being smart enough to see it.

lol at affleck playing bruce wayne as drunk in public. "oh yeah my foundation already uh, release a statement in support of, uh, books."
