Anyway, what do you guys think of the connection of BB8's rope things and how the rathtars seem to have the exact same things? While also being big ol' balls, they come out with the same tether things that BB8 was using just a few minutes before.

"This fierce machine".

The imagery is used to connect BB8 with both the reptars and with Death Star 3. They represent the subtle threat that BB8 will one day stop being 'cute', and refuse to play along.

The Empire was the establishment, they were a clunky, outmoded war apparatus, but their advantage in manpower and resources was enough that it barely mattered. If the First Order is both outgunned and incompetent, it's hard to see them as much of a credible threat to the Republic in an actual war. I've said it a number of times already, but they're North Korea. They've got the bomb, and that's pretty much it.

If the First Order really are just hapless idiot cosplayers (which I agree is how they come across, by design or not), then it brings us back to the question of who the real bad guys of this series are going to be. Unless the arc of the trilogy is going to be about them finding their footing and coming into their own as a competent insurgency, adapting to unconventional warfare, etc. Which would be kind of cool I guess.

Yeah, that's what I assume is going to happen, esp. Going off the next directors comments WRT the prequels and interesting villains.

In the actual film, the death star thing is blown up by Chewbacca and this guy Poe. Rey has no connection to the resistance whatsoever, except that she feels bad for BB8 at the start of the film. And the resistance aren't leftists.

Chewbacca leaves the Starkiller base vulnerable to the pilots, which is a part of the Resistance plan. Rey isn't a resistance member until the end of the film, the resistance is the only group we see with respect for all races, the people who treat droids as equals, and the only group to have any sort of real moral center.

Particularly at the end in my view. The last scene of the movie is the result of Rey making the decision to fly off in search of Luke against remaining with her friends/the resistance. She's decided to embrace her destiny and learn the ways of the Jedi. (The Sith and the Jedi are similar in almost every way, including their quest for greater power. - Sheev) Rey is already way beyond the Resistance before she ever gets a chance to actually join them.

Deciding to follow the path of the Jedi isn't a decision made lightly. In TESB Luke is leaving the rebellion and his friends behind when he makes the decision to pursue the call of destiny in the Dagobah system. Luke's difficulty dealing with the consequences of that decision are central to his arc throughout the movie.

Tony Stark, in Iron Man, is 'more egalitarian' than the guy who brags about how much he loves civilian war death. But that's incredibly misleading.

The truth is in the possibilities that are foreclosed by these false oppositions - the things that are, in Star Wars' ideological universe, impossible.

I really wish they emphasized this more than some dots that show up during a 4 second scene and a really ambiguous line from C-3P0 (or Leia, I legitimately forget who said it) that makes you think Starkiller Base is now targeting the fleet after their devastating first strike on the balcony planet.

Alien, you have spoken the Words, and you have spoken them rightly.
We will tell you our reasons why we use different names for things in this movie.
It all began with a book on semiotics and the lack of inherent links between sign and signified.
Through this, it became known that we could alter signs without impinging on the signified things they point to.

Finally seen the movie, was pretty cool. But still, the editing was weird at points. Finn's antics were a bit much at times, too. While a few famous faces were expected, Grunberg and Leung showing up took me out of the movie for a bit, because they felt like the obligatory Abrams inclusions (well, Grunberg more than Leung). I read that Abrams went mostly for the old McQuarrie designs, went OK for Jakkuu, but not so much for that green planet, where some aliens crossed way into kitsch. Of course, there's yet another death star type appliance, which makes you wonder was even possible to be built to completion without an ongoing war trying to prevent it (you'd think they'd get wise the third time around).

He's going to finally finish that less-hellish suit that Palpatine intentiomally scrapped for budgetary concerns

That was a real EU thing. Also real: His suit had buttons that for, in-canon, no real reason, beeped constantly to gently caress up his sleep.

These are maybe some of my favorite EU things now that I hear about them. You'd think the constant agonizing pain would be enough to keep him all dark side-y, but nope. Palpatine turns his armor into mobile hell week.

One thing I find interesting about the narrative of TFA is that unlike the OT Leia is only ever Princess or General - her former identity as a Senator is completely ignored, despite the existence of a new Republic. Liberal Democracy isn't ever really considered a serious option and only exists to be destroyed by these evil dudes cosplaying as the Empire.

I remember there being a lot of speculation when the trailers for TFA coming out that the snowy forest on Lazer Moon 3 was actually a scene of post-apocalyptic Endor. From a certain point of view I think this is actually correct. If TFA is about unreservedly going full Naboo naturally the imperial cosplayers are spiritual successors to the Gungans/Ewoks/Sand People and their frightening capacity for violence.

I prefer the interpretation from lining up the old Galaxy Maps with the new canon one; "Starkiller Base Origin" falls exactly on Ilum. Makes sense that the planet lightsaber crystals come from is used to make a huge laser weapon.

That's a good take. The most basic explanation for why the movie completely eliminates the droid slavery angle is that the stormtroopers are the droid slaves.

That whole sequence would have benefited so much from having an actual nemesis in the air battle. Not having a Darth Vader out there hunting them plays a huge role in making that part of the battle lacking in tension. I find it odd that they kept Poe in instead of killing him early on but didn't give him a villain to play off of for the final confrontation.
