What was Pierre's secret stash supposed to be? Went to check the wiki to check that event, apparently you lose 2 hearts with him if you tell him you won't keep the secret. Didn't know losing hearts was a thing.

I went into this game having only played the snes and n64 harvest moons so all my first crops were planted in an H pattern because I thought I wouldn't be able to walk through any of them. Pleasantly surprised that was not the case.

Wait, an H pattern? So 7 seeds per 3x3 tile field?

Seriously. Everyone knows you need to plant in a fat C pattern instead. You squeeze out one more crop that way! Later Harvest Moons let you walk through crops, and I'm grateful SV took that design cue instead of the older one.

You can harvest anything in the 8 tiles surrounding the one you're on, so as long as you have at least diagonal access, you can get to all of them. I go to deliver my wife a birthday present and what does her snotty little student say? I won't. I'll just tell everyone you must have run away.

From the little Steam video I know there's ~something~ you eventually put on trees to get ~something~ (sap, I'm guessing), so I'm just worried if there's some thing down the line that I'm going to miss out on by clear-cutting. The two main pitfalls with clearing your farm early are: 1. It's a significant effort for marginal benefit because the starting tools and your proficiencies suck. Better to spend that time making money/working on your skills. 2. You're gimping yourself on wood. The sooner you clear out your farm of trees, the faster your wood source dries up. Cut what you need and then cut a buffer zone for the first three seasons before clearing out grown trees in the winter. This got me about 7-8k wood and I haven't touched a single tree outside of my farm (except to tap and I've got a section of my farm set up to move those taps home.) There's nothing you'll miss out on clear cutting. You're just making things harder on yourself by doing so. Clear what you need, keep a buffer zone for when you need to expand/the seasons turn over and you'll be good. Use Winter to do some serious farm planning for the next year.

So I've been using the Scout->Desperado specialization for a while now and frankly it's not very good. Even with the 10% crit ring you don't crit often enough for the 1-hit kills to be very noticable. I'd rather have the extra 40 health from the other specialization. EponymousMrYar posted:2. It doesn't make a difference whether you harvest the trees now or later. In fact cutting them down lets new trees grow. Also trees outside your farm seem to grow a lot faster. It might be a good idea to only cut down as much wood as you need for now since you don't have much to do in winter anyway though. RatHat fucked around with this message at 06:48 on Mar 28, 2016 |

But yeah, I cut down what I needed and made two buffer zones, one around what I was using and one around the farm edge so I could get everywhere decently easy, then just occasionally cut grown trees down whenever I needed some more wood.

RatHat posted:Wait, what? It doesn't make a difference whether you harvest the trees now or later. In fact cutting them down lets new trees grow. Also trees outside your farm seem to grow a lot faster. On your farm, the way it basically works is that wild trees will jizz out a baby tree in their 8-square reach every so often. Baby trees will also be jizzed out at random places as a matter of course, but this is much slower than adult trees jizzing out babies. Overharvesting trees therefore leads to fewer trees being jizzed out, and less wood overall. Until you are ready to take an area and plant it or build on it, you should basically cut down adult trees as needed, and leave baby trees the hell alone unless they're directly in your way. This is similar to the way you should leave grass the hell alone unless it is in your way (or it's about to click over to winter). Weeds and stones should be cleared aggressively, though, since they don't reproduce in the same way and you can get mixed seeds from weeds and coal from stones. The biggest note, however, is exactly what Yar said - it's just not a productive use of your energy. Any early energy you spend clearing your farm would have been better spent planting and watering more potatoes, blueberries, or hops. This doesn't change until at least 250k earn.

Clear cutting your farm early isn't bad, it's just also not a good use of your time, as mostly stated. You spend a poo poo load of time cracking rocks and cutting trees that could be spent fishing or in the mines, 2 things that can be extremely useful the first 2 seasons to get the ball rolling. Also, The starter tools are actually really loving slow for cutting trees down, the gold/iridium when you get there can do it in like 3/4 swings instead of 8-12. If you really need something else to do in the first couple seasons while your farm is small and funds are low, go into the mines and go as far as possible. Getting the mine bundle reward unlocked early and having iron/gold earlier will make a huge difference. With the changes they made to kegs, running out of wood really isn't going to be a problem for you, at least not a serious one.

Especially since I guess that denies me a whole lot of cutscenes. You're not supposed to be able to get past 8 hearts with single characters without giving them the bouquet first, that's why all the 10 heart events assume you're romantically pursuing them. You can get past 8 hearts if you give them a loved gift on their birthday that brings them right from 7 to 9 to bypass the "stop gaining hearts" trigger.

It was 1 AM and I died second time in the Skull cave, but that time I only lost one item (how random is that) and after making sure it wasn't anything important, I just gave up and finished the day. Those drat serpents are a real pain when they gang up on you, it seems like one of them always manages to sneak an attack in even though I'm trying to time my slashes as accurately as I can. Those Juminos are scam artists. They start reasonable, but ramp their requests up slowly and hope you don't notice. "Stuff you just pick up off the ground." Cool, that seems reasonable. "Stuff you grow on the farm." Okay, sure. "Stuff you pick up in the mine." Well, some of that was hard to get but okay. "42,500 gold." Uhhh- you just got greedy, guys.

Honestly, I feel the greenhouse and super plants like ancient seed were a mistake. Even without it, you'll be done fishing/mining at the beginning of year two and all that's left is to poo poo out crops to meet grandpa's 1,000,000gold requirement.
