All the YJ Starters are pretty bad. I'd go with Imperial Service, if any.

Yu Jing weapons all got a redesign, and none of their line infantry has been updated yet.

ALEPH-wise, Phalanx is one of the more up-to-date starter boxes, so can't go wrong there, but it's also Steel Phalanx, my most hated faction, for the crime of stifling Vedic releases.

Eh, they're a manageable threat. A link of Sograts is worse, imo. They're more mobile, but they lack the bigger guns, and they don't get back up once you put them down.

:wtc:

- The sectorial starters are awesome sculpts but they're dated. I love them but if you have scale issues or want everything done in the new CAD style there might be a problem. The vanilla starter... has few such advantages and most models were either resculpted or had their niches filled by new units in the meantime, so if you wanted that I'd wait for a resculpt.

- The only weapon that's been visibly redesigned is the HMG (Zuyong and new Hac Tao have the new one, the tube-barrel you see elsewhere is the old one). There's been a few changes in other weapons, but you'd have to actively look for them to notice (e.g. boarding shotgun got a little bit more angular and has different grooves on its drum magazine).

Here's something to consider: basic Imperial Service Yu Jing is going to get some updates across the board with the new release. You could start JSA with much less fear of obsoleting your models in a month or two, and also because of the best reason to take JSA, which is access to a shitload of totally sweet bikes.

I'm going to believe that the Shasvasti sectorial was delayed so they can feel out Scavenger some more and if they can give it a few of their models. That skill is too much in character for them not to have.

Also, if The Unknown Ranger doesn't have a eyepatch and bandana in going to have to give him one.

I like the Shikami. ODD Heavy Infantry is boss, and this guy might be linkable in JSA. Ridiculously mobile, AP+DA melee, and specialist make a very good package. He can take protected routes to objective and stealth-butcher anione along the way other than entire link teams, TAGs, Joan or Achilles (and even those he can deal with with they are wounded).

Andromeda seemsnice, but it still hangs on what Guardian actually does. She might be just a slightly different unlinked Thrasimedes, she may be a colossal midfield nuisance to remove.

The fact that it's apparently based on an anime bishonen is just silly enough to make me happy, too.

Well Then, What Shall We Start With?
Played a 400 point game today to get the hang of it before my first ITS event this weekend. It was Steel Phalanx (me) versus NTCA, a really oddball list with two CSUs and a tooled up Bolt link and only one HI, an Aquila Guard.

It was going pretty well. Drakios was rampaging up one flank, Achilles had killed a TR Remote twice (a stunning display of Pan O engineering saw it revived three times throughout the game), my FO Bot had died heroically completing Telemetry for me and I had my Myrmidon link all set to smoke the hell out of the opponent's HVT and let Machaon and a Dactyl run up and inoculate the hell out of them. Then the Bolts rushed forward, hacked Achilles and shot him repeatedly until dead.

My Dactyl revived Achilles after a Myrmidon sacrificed herself to chain rifle the entire Bolt link to death in one order, five kills for one shot, so I was still feeling in the game. Then in my opponent's next turn an Auxilia I had managed to forget about drove its Auxbot round a series of narrow alleys out of LOS and flamed my entire Myrmidon link in revenge for the loss of the Bolts. My Chain of Command model and all my smoke delivery was now dead heading into turn 3 with me banking on using it to grab objectives.

All told it was a really fun game, I am super pumped for the impending tournament even if I will probably lose to a double Jotum list or some 30-order USAriadna monstrosity but I have a few rules queries.

1) When the Bolts moved up and hacked Achilles, he was behind an LOS blocking wall and they started their order 9" away. The guy declared Move + Hack, moved 1" into ZOC and then hacked Achilles. Apparently I didn't get an ARO other than Turn to Face, because the first short skill was Move. Is this correct? It meant that the WIP roll to immobilise was uncontested.
2) Does using a Hacking Device or Forward Observing break a link? We weren't sure, because they seemed like ranged attacks. Also do you get +1 Burst on Forward Observing in a link team?
3) If a model is prone, next to a model that isn't prone, and I shoot a Rocket Launcher at the model I can see, does the model that is prone get any kind of ARO or dodge against the template?

Aix Athanatos
Nov 3, 2011
1) Page 62 in the rulebook says that having a trooper declare or execute an order in a model's ZoC qualifies you to take the reset action. Technically speaking, your opponent declares a move short skill and moves his models, then you declare AROs (change facing or reset) and he delcares his second skill.

2) According to this page in the wiki, you should be fine. This page says any entire order skill without the movement label breaks the link. The way I've played it is any hacking program that takes a full order (like supportware) breaks the link.

3) Page 55 in the rulebook reads: Template Weapons can be Dodged with a PH Roll. A trooper may attempt to Dodge a Template Weapon without LoF to the attacker, by passing a PH-3 Roll. I read that as yes, if the rocket lands then the prone model would get a PH-3 dodge.

Definitely agree there, and I think Geckos will see some improvements or added interests. The CA 'Xeodrons' were also revealed to be a very comparable high-50s cost, blitzen-carrying, ARM5 S6 TAG, which outclass Geckos in some notable ways, having super-jump and Haris (with an Umbra Samaritan, which is still a mystery) for a few points more.

WAR FOOT posted:

Like Sephyr, I really take the opposite view. Close Combat may not be the usual game-winning attack but it can be key, and that guy is a very different and interesting approach to it than the usual disposable warband. With ODD and mobility, he can just approach without taking many or severe risks, and when he's in combat, poo poo's going down! Certainly seems better than the Unknown Ranger, which looks like a slightly inferior CC fighter who also pays for shooting power, without any mobility skills that could actually get him into CC.

Granted, but maybe because I don't face TAGs as often or don't find them as threatening as a numerous list, I just think that the absolute killing power of Marksman L2 outweighs all the AP advantages.

Just watched the video for the Onyx force on BoW. Glad the only Shasvastii I've painted up (the Noctifier) is one of the range not getting a re-sculpt. Also that two TAG fire-team with an Umbra looks pretty deadly.

Some tidbits from that video:
- Unidrons and Rodoks can both add an Umbra Legate to their link team. (not sure quite what role Nexus Operatives play in this whole link team set-up. They seemed to brush over them quite quickly)
- Haris on the Xeodrons is explicitly only by including a Samaritan (Xeodrons do not have Haris anywhere in their profile; presumably the Samaritan will)
- Xeodron profile is shown in the video in full.
- Overdrons are some heavier-class TAG, but no details given. Described as 'a nightmare', the designer was quite plain in saying that the Xeo and Overdrons were supposed to be very powerful options.

To be honest, I don't think the Haris TAG-team is going to be worth the ~160+ points that it'll cost. It's one heck of a cool option though.

I think that Lt. choice is going to be a huge pain for Onyx. They can't just play the Lt. shell game with cheap troops, yet they don't have generic CA's ability to completely avoid LoL. That means either inefficiency (taking a non-cheap Lt. that hides) or risk (using the Lt. as an active piece).

For what it's worth I know a couple of guys who play a lot of Age of Sigmar but they're a bit weird, hated WHFB and are the sort of GW fan who buy everything.

Taking out the Bolts was good indeed, then losing all my Myrmidons to the same trick was less fun (especially given it dumped me in Loss of Lieutenant for the last turn).

Nexus have the same link options as Legates. Samaritans can link with Rodoks and haris Xeodrons. There can be only one Umbra in a link, and presumably this restriction includes Nexus as well.
Also the Spec Ops will be a Nexus.

The biggest thing for me is the seven tags, with two in a haris link. Granted this will be over 500 pts before Lt., specialists, and haris Samaritan, but still, seven tags. Next biggest thing is this army is going to be mobile as hell.
