Holy crap, You Must Remember This is really good. Didn't expect much, but the fact it provides social commentary and historic context got me really excited. Listening to the series on Manson btw.

I've been listening to the current season on the Communist blacklist, and while the info is good, the host never changes inflection so the regulatory of hey voice makes me drowsy. Also, I don't typically notice or care about vocal fry, but she really fuckin' loves doing that with hey voice at the end of sentences.

I end up getting pissed at way too many podcasts because the hosts have annoying speech pattern tics or vocal problems, and it annoys me that these things annoy me. I listen to a lot of podcasts and audio books and a lot of people who get into podcasting need some radio voice training. Carlin is great, and so is Mike Duncan, but too many others drive me batty. Thinking sideways, last podcast on the left, how did this get made are all good examples.

I only listened to The Wrath of Khans two months ago, and that Bill Cosby reference will be the most awkward and dated part of it.

This is pretty much the first time I've read the book the show I is on. It doesn't make the podcast bad, just different, I'm listening more for the Carlin presentation and analysis than the point by point.

I have a friend that theorized that Dan has to have side gigs to account for how long this takes, anyone know of anything?

I listened to so many crappy recordings the past few weeks, so the clear audio of Must Remember was really nice. I noticed her tics after you mentioned them, but the writing is so good that I don't care. Her imitating deranged Susan Atkins got me laughing every time. The actor doing Polanski, Manson and all the others was great as well.

I guess I'm not the only one finding it hard to get through the You Must Remember This Blacklist episodes. I was expecting something a bit more, but it really feels like the same story over and over. "So this person was kinda-sorta friends with some Socialists/Anti-Fascists/Communists during the war, and that led to them being blacklisted/ignored/unable to have a better career ... which was pretty dumb, right." Or alternately, "and then they supported the blacklist, which is pretty obviously a dumb thing that some people did."

The Manson series is one of the best, though. Most of the MGM stories are pretty well done, too.

Karina Longworth's generally got a great voice, and her impressions are never not entertaining, but I do agree the rare times when she goes creaky it's pretty awful. "Mubi..."

The business analogies in this episode reminded that a while back I bought Rome, Inc because Carlin talked it up so much during the Marius episode of Death Throes of The Republic. It really sucked and I'm not sure what a guy like Dan Carlin would get out of it.

Caustic Soda, podcast of the weird, awful, and gross has come to an end. Just a few episodes ago they were mentioning tabling topics for later episodes and they just decided to end the show. It's so abrupt that I'm kind of hoping that this is just their April fools prank. The show was never one of my favorites but I am going to miss it.

Yeah at the beginning of their last episode they say that they want to dedicate more time to their other projects, which I'm going to believe is the actual reason since Toren already has plans to make a new album.

I'm sure it's exactly what they said. Just worn down and wanting to commit time to other things. I'm glad they decided to give a special final episode rather than just fade away like some other podcasts do.

Yeah, I can understand that and it's cool of them to at least do a finale type deal instead of just stopping. I just feel kind of blindsided to have all of a sudden get hit with 'The End!' maybe if I used twitter or something I'd have seen someone talk about it coming up there, but I didn't get any sense they were planning to wrap up and end the podcast before this.

He also needs to start drawing on sources that were written after the 1960's. The WWI series was painful to get through because of how outdated a lot of his information was.

I've posted about it a few times, but last week's episode of In Our Time about Agrippina the Younger was really good, probably the best one I've heard in ages. Interesting topic (even if I already knew a lot of it), well spoken guests with interesting thoughts who didn't ramble on or stammer like they're having a nervous breakdown, and Lord Melvyn seemed to be in a good mood for once - he hardly even interrupted anyone!

Well worth a listen if you're at all interested in Roman history, or just an infrequent listener to In Our Time.

Yes! Now I can start listening to it! I have no patience to wait week by week so I prefer to binge after they end. I cannot wait for Gran Colombia. I almost done reading García Márquez's The General in His Labyrinth and need to more about what happened around there and who the players were.

I really tried to keep an open mind during that interview. Forming your own bubble of information is a real thing. So I agreed with Ezra's opening point that while Norquist is certainly controversial, he's a huge player in DC and understanding his motivations is something worthwhile.

But the dude's motivations are bonkers and he's clearly stuck in the 80s. Well, his rationales are stuck there. Communists! Unions! Reagan! Deregulation! All Democrats are owned! Like, :wtf:
