Lee Bo is back in China.

quote:

“I feel the mainland has prospered and the motherland is affluent and powerful,” he told Phoenix Television. “As a Chinese I feel proud. I plan to take my son back to the mainland for medical treatment later. My feeling is, as a Hongkonger, if Hong Kong wants development, it must closely rely on the mainland, the motherland.”
Sounds like he had a frank and open discussion with the CCP and on the basis of factual argument and persuasion changed his mind.

So what do they have on him, that he'd come back to Hong Kong to say some propaganda and then go back to China? And announce that he's gonna take his kid to China to serve as a hostage get medical treatment, too.

Edit:

Oh wait, I guess it might be this guy:

quote:

The police statement said that Mr. Lee had told them that he had gone to the mainland “to assist in an investigation of a case relating to a person surnamed Gui.” Gui Minhai, a writer for and co-owner of Mighty Current Media, disappeared from his apartment in Pattaya, Thailand, and re-emerged on Chinese state television confessing to having violated parole after he was convicted of killing a woman while driving drunk in 2003.

He probably had very serious threats made against his family and coworkers and is doing whatever the CCP wants right now to avoid harming them. Just a guess though.

Most/all of these guys have family in China, so lots of points of pressure the CCP can apply. The two who came back recently for a day, both family in Shenzhen. Lee Bo comes back, also for one day and only to cancel a missing persons report, but his wife left for China the day before almost like a hostage exchange situation. Lee Bo didn't even stop at border control on the way back north, his car was just waved right through.

Two separate Chinese news agencies both described Lee Bo returning to HK after "being released by mainland police", which sure doesn't sound like someone voluntarily helping with enquires, free to leave any time he wants.

China has a problem with expired vaccines that were being sold illegally, leading to a couple of kids ending up in vegetative states. China responds by arresting some of the recipients. Because of course they do.

Govt. demolitions met by protests, rumours that a cop was killed. Bunch of photos at the link, including what looks like a little old lady lying prone. Seeing a lot of protests, especially over labour issues, which has led China to issue a directive to local govt. officials to nip this stuff in the bud otherwise face sacking (or more). Almost certainly a directive that will lead to protests being put down with violence.
https://twitter.com/neos_noir/status/714053892091281408

Speaking of protests, those workers who were jailed for daring to ask for their back pay and paraded as an example to discourage others? That's backfiring on China badly.

The Czech Republic gave Xi Jinping a warm welcome. Activists turned out with Tibet flags to greet the cavalcade.

https://twitter.com/cyleung2017/status/714616313033797632

Previously activists had defaced some China flags. Here's the video of how they did it:
https://twitter.com/anon_snufkin/status/714642518693003264

Of course the Xi Jinping crew reacted very calmly to protestors waving Tibet flags. Sometimes just shouting them down:
https://twitter.com/lhasa_bhu1985/status/714439946237382656

Sometimes it got a bit physical:
https://twitter.com/tom3djay/status/714539118512979970 (You'll need to click through for FB video)

And sometimes they were full on thugs. Peep this livestream. At the 8 minute mark they spend a full minute trying to rip one out of the hands of protestors
https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/714601664007639045
And 2 mins later hit a man who is trying to move a giant Czech flag (held by Chinese, not Czechs) which is being used to cover a pic of Dalai Lama:

There's another protest happening today. Live updates on this Czech Twitter if interested:
https://twitter.com/dvtvcz/status/714764534985175040

Sidenote. I have no idea if these infodumps are welcomed or annoying as gently caress. Let me know if you want more, or not.

P.S. Lee Bo appeared in Hong Kong again yesterday, and miraculously, I mean what are the odds, the only people to find him AGAIN were journalists from a pro-China paper. Who are now publishing two very awkward selfies Lee Bo took in North Point. Totally legit and not suspicious.

It's kind of a big deal for China to be kidnapping HK/overseas citizens, right? Like, isn't that exactly what people were worried about in the 90s?

Xi Jinping seems to have gone absolutely apeshit after the economy started slowing down. China's insane extraterritorial ambitions and old fashioned despotic internal crackdowns have to be a Big Deal that foreign leaders are noticing, right?

I'm not an expert at all, but I think the issue with "one country, two systems," is that HK has almost no recourse in this situation. Once the PRC decided to start eroding HK's rights and installing PRC shills into the government, it became way too late to do anything about it.

Macau is the control group you guys want. HK has always had a pretty vibrant pro-democracy movement while Macau does/did not. Macau effortlessly passed the Article 23 anti-sedition laws, simplified Chinese and Mandarin are all over the territory and the whole place is a big money laundering scam. When the odd person does speak out, they are swiftly dealt with under Article 23.

Being quiet and putting up with China's poo poo does not result in greater autonomy.

Even better control groups for the Tibet one are Guangxi, Ningxia or Inner Mongolia, which are all very quiet, obedient ethnic autonomous regions. They do not have any actual autonomy.

If you're a Chinese dissident and you want to be safe, get your entire family to the US and get naturalized. I'm pretty sure a Chinese abduction of a US citizen on US soil is an act of war.

While not an abduction in the same way as Lee Bo was, Chinese agents have been caught pressuring corrupt officials who escaped to America to return to China to face justice. They presumably threatened their families in China, but we don't know exactly. Here's an NYT piece on it.

I lost the doc with links, but here are some recent things of interest:

Ten Years won best movie at the Hong Kong film awards. Mainland media only reported on the other 20 awards, and pretended that there wasn't a best film gong at all. loving pathetically fragile.

https://twitter.com/garvey_b/status/715878472275468288

The DVD is out in August for those who missed it.

The new Hong Kong National Party which openly calls for independence was refused a company registration. Then multiple govt. officials came out and declared even talking about independence was breaking the law. So now of course everyone is talking about HK independence even more than ever.

https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/715178650887262212

It's even an option on the proposed referendum for the other new political party headed up by Nathan Law and Joshua Wong etc. Demosistō, a name that is being mocked on all sides. As is the fact the referendum they plan is ten years away.

China are being assholes again. Now they are actively kidnapping Taiwanese citizens from Kenya. Accused of a phone scam, they were mostly aquitted in Kenya, but were deported for visa violations. China being China said "they're ours, One China" and had them all sent to Beijing. The Taiwanese were so scared of being sent to China they literally barricaded themselves into the Kenyan cells and the Kenyan cops (who had also tried lying to them saying they were going to Taiwan) broke down the doors and used tear gas on them.

Everyone else already told you how dumb and wrong you are, but it's worth noting that this is an ongoing narrative that you see about Tibet- if foreigners would just stop paying attention, or if Tibetans themselves would just stop demonstrating, then things would be sooooo much better in Tibet. Gee, who stands to benefit from the last vestiges of foreign support for Tibet disappearing, and Tibetans themselves giving up?
