You're thinking of Mighty Switch Force, I guess. Shantae is a pretty standard platformer with some exploration/upgrading elements. It controls well and it looks nice. It does have the backtracking issue but I don't think it's more of a problem than Odallus or other games played in the channel, so.

Looks like transformations were a regular thing for three of the games and they're adding more in for Half Genie Hero.

I thought MSF was a block pushing game where you collect escaped prisoners anyway.

Oh good, a sub vs dub conversation

That's up to personal interpretation because some shows have great dubs like Samurai Champloo and then there're others that come out with not-as-good-as-you-hoped dubs like Seven Deadly Sins.

Dubs are cool because I can enjoy the show more passively and be more immersed instead of having to read subtitles all the time, I'd rather play something in my own language instead of staring at words on the bottom of the screen missing the more minor acting in games like the Witcher 3.

However the problem with anime dubs (and videogame dubs to some extent) is that honestly there just isn't a large enough pool of talent so it feels like every show has the same 5 or so people voicing it.

I watch drat near everything with subtitles on anyway so it doesn't bother me but yeah, I try to have dubs whenever they're decent.

People always act like reading is a monumental chore and the subtitles are on some other screen, it's baffling.

W3 is a bad example because the English version was CDPR's primary focus, not the Polish one.

For me they are.

Most of the time I like to watch stuff while playing a mundane game or drawing. I have stuff playing on my second monitor and glance over from to time. Granted this means i probably miss some visual things, but I'm still picking up on all the dialog and can start paying attention when things pick up. Subs mean I need to pay full attention and can't really draw or grind in an MMO :v:

My point being looking at the bottom of the screen isn't cutting the rest of the show out of your vision. Obviously if you're going something else or have dyslexia or whatever, that's different.

But then again, if you're not actively watching it anyway you're already committed to a lesser experience so what does that argument really support?

As someone who doesn't mind either option, reading subs does detract some amount from actually watching though. It's just a thing of like, if you clearly understand the words being said in whatever the language may be, then all your concentration can go to actually looking at the show. With the required-to-follow-dialogue-at-all sub option, it's not like you gotta aim solely at those words at the bottom, but you do need an eye there regardless and I feel like that can sap some, even if only the smallest bit sometimes, of the experience of totally watching whatever your thing might be.

Too much thought put into anime transcription, but there you go.

As someone that grew up with both subs and dubs for various types of media, I'll say I prefer subs for anything live-action and take it on a case-to-case basis when it comes to animation. Brazilian dubs tend to be better than American ones in my experience (we also have like 6 actors that do every single role, by the way), but I don't really go out of my way for those. Really, I just take whatever is more accessible, which tends to be subs for anime and non-English content.

I kind of assumed everybody was talking about animation here.

Dubs on live action shows are loving horrible.

I mean, if you're American/British you never have to deal with live action dubs (unless you're watching old-school kung fu poo poo), but if you grew up with anything else as your native language you get used to it.

It supports that it's a lesser experience? I don't mjnd subbed and watch a decent amount of anime, but I find that I remember a lot less about a show when I look back on it than normal because I'm too busy focused on 10% of the screen instead of actually watching it and being immersed.

As far as I know that's because dubbing isn't financially sound with relatively small language groups.

Subs, dubs, or Eastern European voice-over?

Farewell, marble-dwellers!
My DVD of Drunken Master has points during the movie where only the dubbed English audio is available or it's the English audio being a part of the Cantonese track. Jackie Chan has some whiny prince valiant type voice in English.

The Game Boy Color game and Risky's Revenge had transforming, but ~plot reasons~ had the character lose her magic at the end of Revenge, so Pirate's Curse uses items, instead. Half-Genie Hero will go back to transformations.
