Groove seems to work alright, but like most of the other apps occasionally they wig out. Presumably from things disappearing from out under them. Sometimes it won't play my onedrive tracks, and flashes through them all really fast until it tells me I have to sign in again (?). Othertimes it will resume playback when I get back in the car, and play through one song, or part of a song, then disappear off into the ether never to be heard from again.

It generally seems to play music and audio reasonably well, which is more than I can say for the "podcasts" app. I installed the Bringcast beta that is in there, but somehow that application doesn't have a play button? If your podcast stops playing there is no way to start it again without trying to find it in the list to start it. No idea what that UI is supposed to be.

Groove frequently stops playing under lock screen or refuses to play music in the background. I have to reset my phone. Sometimes I have to reset it because it can't sign in. It happens often enough to be frustrating. The problem is, after 8 years I have a lot of subscription music that I would lose if I stopped using Groove.

Using Bluetooth sometimes crashes the whole audio stack in 8.1, curious if that's been fixed. :)

I've only had Groove crash on me a couple of times; however, I got my first pair of Bluetooth headphones a while ago and it seems to be a total crapshoot as to whether it connects to Bluetooth for voice, music or both and frequently requires reconnecting a couple of times to work properly. Why is that?

Agreed.

Though in a way, if they would partner with Intel, run the latest good Atom processor, and allow Continuum with x86 apps. Then they might have their niche.

If they don't do that though, well.....

Continuum with x86 capability would be amazing. My initial reaction was that it'd basically doom the UWP platform but it'd probably be ok if they only allowed x86 programs to run while in Continuum mode (which would also be the only time it'd really make sense to use them)

UWP has it's own challenges and I don't think anyone really gives a poo poo about UWP mobile anymore. UWP is pretty much only a bad desktop platform right now with little to no advantages over Win32/x86 and ton of downsides. I think HTML5/web assemblies is far more likely to become a universal platfrom over UWP.

You keep forgetting that UWP is not just desktop and mobile, it's whatever Microsoft wants it to target. That includes things Xbox and Hololens. Hell, maybe even other platforms someday. Honestly I much rather build a UWP app than a WPF one at this point, because the lead time to getting something production ready is much shorter than building separate desktop, mobile, whatever apps. It's just getting people to download it. Store engagement is not great verses people expecting an outside installer.

Also  at HTML5/Web as a "universal" solution. While stuff like React Native are much better frameworks than what was/still is out there, you're still not getting the performance you're gonna get from going native. Hence why things like, say, Xamarin* exist. Which may indirectly spur UWP and other Windows development, as getting devs to write C# for their apps makes it much easier to target Windows too. And you're actually native performance versus a web view.

*I may be slightly bias with this point, but whatever.

I don't entirely recall that, I still dev on WP/UWP on and off and still think it's a dead platform. I'm really hopeful for the platform of UWP it's just not in a good spot yet. Win32/Android/iOS or HTML5 are the only things people currently care about.

I'm really hoping Xamarin coming on board can allow us to get a Universal C# platform that would be amazing.

I guess I found something like it.

I work in a largish city where the majority of developers work on Microsoft technologies. We have several companies that had large Silverlight projects and several WPF projects. Oh as a side note all of those companies have abandoned Silverlight for HTML/Javascript.

I have met one other person that has ever even looked at the Windows Phone Developer or Windows 8 tools. And that was because he was taking over my position at a major carrier that was required to have an WP8 developer.

I have met about a hundred each of iOS/Android developers.

I'm guessing the NYC event was probably one of the very best //Publish events outside of Redmond.

The number and quality of WP8/W8 developers is absolutely a joke.

The only way to really turn about WP8/W8 development would be for Microsoft to outright buy Xamarian and include it in all Visual Studio MSDN accounts professional and up.

That way MS would have a mobile development store (use Visual Studio publish to everything Native including our own).

In total it would probably be easier for MS to just Abandon WP boost up Nokia X, get a total suite of comparable services and relaunch WP9 as a highly customized Android skin.

If MS didn't have the free phones / $100 promotions their app store would have ten of thousands of entries at most.

I still stand by the opinion that we need Xamarin as part of MSDN or free to get any excitement on C# mobile development.

Yes, but I said "right now", someday it might be universal but right now it's just for their phones and desktop. I know it should be on Hololens/XBox someday but right now it's not available on XBox and Hololens is not a product. On desktop it has downsides compared to Win32/WPF due to the sandboxing and performance issues/missing functionality. On mobile it's of course the only solution but I don't think anyone is working on a WP only app/game at this point.

x86 continuum on a phone + Xamarin/Mono putting UWP everywhere would be amazing but right now UWP is in a rough spot, but it's only a couple of days until Build and I'll be watching the Keynote hoping for some good news.

It definitely is, even though it's worse, because worse is better. The best native app will always be better than the best web app, but it doesn't matter, because the web is everywhere people care about.

The promise of UWP is well and good & the overlap with .NET Core is well and good & opensourcing .NET is well and good & acquiring Xamarin is well and good & none of it matters because the web is eating everything and the vast majority of apps that people care about are web focus if not exclusively web apps because distribution is painless & there's no fee to pay anyone.

At least we can still write C# on the server, I guess, at least until the node infection fully metastasizes and the only language anyone knows is javascript.

Oh of course people will keep using it. But seeing the growth in Xamarin usage, especially among big companies, people do want performance. A good amount of the companies who switch to us do because they tried HTML5 apps and it failed (You could argue it's on them, but whatever :v:). And as more companies see users reject lovely web apps, I think more will seriously consider things like Xamarin. HTML5 has its advantages, and is getting better for perf, but I'm confident that it won't be as good as what we're doing. Again, slightly biased.

But make sure you watch the Build keynotes next week, some really cool stuff is coming that'll be awesome and solve some of these pain points. And for anyone is going, I'll be there! So be sure to say hi. :)

Rad, but useless to most of the world since Cortana is still idiotically limited to a handful of regions. Just like WP10. I have a 930 which is on the supported list for receiving the final build of WP10 but nothings available yet.
For a company that needs every bit of market share it can get, MS really seems desperate to have WP10 in as few hands as possible. And by tying all these new features into Cortana and making huge announcements about them, but then still not making Cortana available to most of the world, it's like they really enjoy giving a big up-yours to the diminishing support-base that they have left.

It was never a problem with Silverlight, but WinRT background audio would intermittently pause without explanation. Never when the debugger was hooked up. Searched all over the web, no clear picture as to what's happening. I've posted more details about it itc I think. Eventually I just gave up.

It was fixed and then it rebroke in a recent update. I listen via speaker and it sometimes craps out after my phone locks or I switch to a different app. Once this happens, I need to power cycle my phone to get it to work.

Partycat

The VPN has a toggle in the notification center, so depending on your client you could just push that when you're on an open network and you're good to go. I am not sure of any sort of task manager thing that would do that for you.

Bluetooth and audio playback are not at all top notch on W10 at the moment, but they're not the worst that I've ever used. I miss Mixradio a bunch since it worked really well. Groove still won't play from a consistent set of music - it just sometimes seems to focus on certain tracks and ignore others. Slacker works like rear end on the 640, takes forever to open, randomly starts blaring out of my phone during the work day. Once it pairs though BT is fine. I have some Plantronics earbuds that work fine. Volvo Sensus works fine, though the text doesn't always update. The Band 2, well, the keyboard and audio controls don't work most of the time but that's something they're aware of.

New universal apps for Windows 10

We knew that Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter were committed to "Universal Windows Platform Apps," but we got a news that more are coming: Starbucks is the big one. But you can also expect Uber, Vine, Bank of America, WWE, and a ton of games.

Microsoft showed off a few graphical flourishes developers can now add to Windows apps, including a motion blur and highlight effect you can activate with trackpad gestures. They also dove into some code that lets developers easily add Ink abilities into their apps. A virtual ruler was involved. Microsoft also showed off an "Electronic Flight Bag," which is basically a Surface tablet that pilots can use to track all the information they need to fly. Boeing is going all in with it.

But a bigger deal is that Microsoft is providing a desktop tool to developers so they can convert their current Windows apps to the new universal platform. Microsoft says it can work on 16 million current apps.

Yeah, it is one of those things which will never have really broad market impact or anything, but it does go a long way to charm a lot of techies. Expect to see more windows laptops at tech conferences of all kinds.

It would be nice it this could come to W10M via Continuum as well, but I would be pretty unsurprised if it is tied to x86 in some sufficiently troublesome ways to make it low priority.
