I am just a kid at christmas right now, waited all day to watch Beasts of Wars' appalling videos, really excited by all the new hacking stuff (cool rock/paper/scissors of having a killer hacker in the wings to counter-hack anyone trying to assault-hack your remotes etc, provided they're repeaters, and it really repays canny play, keeping your camo hacker un-revealed or in hidden deployment) just devastating EVO abilities, although we haven't seen all new profiles yet, I fail to see why an army, especially one which takes hackers and/or remotes, wouldn't use one.

Waiting till after dinner to watch the fireteam video. Love this game.

I say appalling videos, because while I lap up the info, these guys' attempts at banter are just absolutely painful. Zero charisma or charm there, and at least one of them is also pig-ignorant of how the game works. I appreciate that's a bit of a Watson effect to help novice or just-interested players watching to get into it, but as an experienced player I find the guy so irritating. The CB rep could tell me all the information in this video in 10 minutes, easily.

I find that Hacking devices are kind of like grenades or other speculative shot weapons - you realise on the drive home just how you could have used it to devastating effect, but like a fool you tunnel visioned into the normal BS attacks. Happened to me recently when I was being suppressed by an elite PanO HI on an objective. I foolishly used a Bandit to try and dodge into Close Combat (which would have been nearly even odds anyway) when the drat thing was an assault hacker anyway - if I'd hacked, it would have at the very least forced him to break suppression and Reset.

I think these changes are helping to bring hacking to where it needs to be - a really effective side game in certain situations, but not the end-all and be-all. More of a field-leveller against hard targets.

EVOs now allow duo links in vanilla at least. But even with all these new rules, the variety of vanilla armies (which are also getting nice upgrades) is still a powerful force to contend with.

So it sounds like Duo fireteams only will be available to non-sectorial forces, if you take an EVO repeater for the supportware. A lot of new players have the initial reaction that fireteams make sectorial armies a stronger choice than vanilla armies. This is categorically not the case, flexibility and the ability to surprise your opponent are more valuable than raw stats in Infinity. I also think that building an army around fireteam advantages is slightly better than it looks, because those advantages will degrade rapidly when you start taking wounds, and you are giving up a lot of flexibility in the tools you can use in the active turn, and in your board position, because fireteam coherency makes you much more vulnerable to templates.

If you take a sectorial you give up the ability to cherry pick the best tools across your entire faction, often this is better than a fireteam.

If you take a fireteam, you are committing to deploying a chunk of points in a smallish area, possibly vulnerable to blasts, and possibly not in the ideal positions you would choose for them as individuals. You are then committed to playing them a certain way, and the points of the team are often all bound to the same strengths and weaknesses of that troop type - for example, an elite HI shooting team being marginalised by smoke or ODD, because they lack a MSV. You are just more predictable, and although you have the significant bonuses to Burst, SSL2, and BS/WIP, those will degrade and it won't overcome all other disadvantages in a FtF roll.

I'd always take a fireteam (of at least the line infantry sort, which being a lower investment are a bit more unambiguously advantageous) when playing a sectorial army - but I wouldn't necessarily always rate a sectorial over a vanilla force.

Nope, the list was all about being all-HI, three links just gave me the tools to run it. And unless ISS gets something like mixed haris of Pheasant + 2 Baos the most they have to offer in that regard is dual Su-Jians. Which are beastly, but still.

I've been a Haqq player for a long time, and I'm getting kinda bummed out by my faction's treatment by Human Sphere. Please help me feel better about this.

We used to be the only faction with a BS attack affecting BTS (Viral), and then the Tohaa become "the Viral faction." Same for Regeneration being largely trumped by Symbiote Armor.
Doctors are cool, but with Medkits being ranged now, spending the extra orders to get into base-to-base for that to matter is a lot harder to justify. Especially since the doctor upgrade costs twice as much as a medic, almost enough to add a Ghazi.
Impersonation is cool, but now every rear end in a top hat with an HD+ has access to it.
Haris was a flavorful way to distinguish Qapu Khalqi as being well organized, but that's been given to every faction now (including things like Wulvers, who can make terrifying use of it). This is pretty actively upsetting to me, since being able to add that second link was unique among non-Aleph/Tohaa factions.
Still no special remotes, meaning the Supportware programs are of generally less use.

I guess I'm having a hard time with what the faction identity is supposed to be. I love the fluff and the sculpts, but I feel like (other than lots of doctors, which is mostly a way to spend lots of points) anything I can do, another faction can do it better. What am I missing?

Well, Haqqislam is still the faction for doctors, believe me using a medipack for a chance to miss on BS, then a PH-3 roll, typically 7 or 8, is not a great way to save orders! Using a Haqqislam doctor plus on 17s, possibly re-rolling if your target has a Cube, is a lot better.

I can see why you say those things about Haris/Impersonation/Viral, but I fundamentally disagree with your reasoning. Infinity is balanced, at the bottom of things, by having all units pay an appropriate points cost. I have always maintained to new players that it's not a game like 40k, where Orks are Orks, Eldar are Eldar, and those imply fixed differences in key stats.

All factions in Infinity are essentially the same. Differences come from the availability level and possible combinations of specific skills. This then generates a hell of a lot more differences in players' lists because each faction, even sectorials, have broad options; because these options are well balanced, a variety is seen.

(not like a 40k army where there are 30 units in a codex and no-one ever uses 25 of them in tournaments, because the other 5 are far better)

So I think that factions' rules in Infinity always have and always will overlapped almost-completely. In fact, although I don't consider it a major problem, I'm opposed in principle to Tohaa getting special-snowflake alien kit rules, supposedly to make them 'feel different'. I prefer the approach taken with CA, which largely uses the same weapons with only 1 or 2 self-contained special skills and upgrades to reflect their technology's alien origin. I actively enjoy the fact that all factions draw on the same rules, and the main difference is the look of the models. In a real game, I never feel as if I'm playing the same army as my opponent (I only partially play this way when playing against my own faction!) due to the number of options available.
