Browsing Aggrogator (I know) there is a funny picture of an elephant. LOL, that artist obviously never saw an elephant! But I was curious about the picture and googled to learn more. Didn't find that exact illustration, but, uh . . wait no how? why? I don't . . . Maybe I am the one who is wrong? Maybe elephants really did look like that a few hundred years ago?

People living in Europe during the middle ages didn't encounter elephants that often and the only context they had for big animals was stuff like wolves, bears, cattle, and horses. So you get a bunch of pictures that amount to someone telling them "like this other animal, but bigger, with tusks and with a long nose."

Elephant skulls are also the reason we have the myth of the cyclops.

That's where the Unicorn comes from, also. Drunk British wanker goes to Africa, sees rhino, returns home, tells ugly British monk how he saw a horse with a horn on it's head.

Acne Rain posted:If you really want crazy poo poo, look up how medieval bestiaries drew crocodiles. This word-press has some interesting information on "Cocodrilles" and how the information was warped in bestiaries. https://marginaliamonster.wordpress.com/tag/medieval-bestiaries/ An early account described the symbiotic relationship between plovers and crocs (plovers clean their teeth), and then someone else came along and said that if the crocs fell asleep the bird would go down it's throat and then eat it's way out of its belly! After that, crocs were often depicted with animals exploding out of their bodies. Just look at that poo poo!

Why the gently caress are the heads always upside down? Is it because the top jaw opens instead of the bottom jaw so their imaginations just couldn't figure it out?
