Yep. It's a goldmine.

This isn't unpopular. If this were the middle ages, entire epics would be sung by bards, commemorating how loving strange he looks. People would set aside a day every year to wear masks that look like him to frighten away evil spirits.

The title on this was, "As a potential immigrant..." which is my favourite line of reasoning on the internet ever. People will preface potentially controversial opinions with "I am a member of the group I am criticizing" as if this gives their argument more weight. It doesn't.

lol I'm remembering an episode an episode of House Hunters or something where they follow a white American couple trying to find their dream house in Panama and they checked up with them a few months after they bought a house and the wife goes on about how "we've really involved ourselves in the culture and we've already met and made friends with a ton of locals!"

Cut to them sitting at a table full of American, English-speaking white people.

A few years old, but as of 2013 31 states allowed rapist to apply for joint custody. It sounds like it's being mostly stopped though.

Yeah, I live here. I still can't see that ever happening and a quick Google search didn't get me any cases where it actually happened. Just some where a rapist tried for visitation as a way to get out of paying child support. And I can't even find anything about that either.

Here's a set of statistics from a few states that specifically look at cases where both parents applied for custody: http://www.villainouscompany.com/vcblog/archives/2012/04/child_supportcu.html

Unsurprisignly, the spread in those cases between fathers and mothers getting primary custody is pretty much 50-50. The actual imbalance in overall numbers stems pretty much entirely from the fact that fathers are much less likely to even file for custody in the first place.

Honestly even if it never got granted, the courts in those states basically allow rapists to maintain contact and legally harass their victims. For a crime of power, it's putting a lot of power in the hands of the perpetrator towards his victim.

Not only rapists, but even fathers who have been accused and sometimes even been proven guilty of domestic abuse towards their children have gotten custody and/or visitation rights when they fight for them. The custody thing for MRA's is the easiest one of all their arguments to strike down. My neighbor growing up was a single father whose wife left and paid child support and had the kids on alternating weekends. ,

Because rape isn't about about power, its about women wearing too sexy clothing, and men just can't help themselves, so it's logically consistent if you're a giant loving rear end in a top hat.

There really haven't been good studies on it. The data that there are suggest what you just said, but the research is sparse and dated. It would be amazing if someone did some really solid research on the topic, but the state of record collection in US courts is abysmal.

I can't find it now but someone on my FB posted an article recently where a teenage rape victim couldn't file for state support for her child so she could finish loving high school because the state made it mandatory she sue for child support and if she did, it would give her rapist the right to sue for custody.

It's weird, because he's technically right on a couple of accounts. Like, yes. The majority of white people didn't own slaves. Because they were incredibly expensive. And yes, many indentured servants did come here during the founding of America, and in many ways, they were not distinguished from blacks for a period of time. Howard Zinn actually wrote about this in A People's History, I would suggest reading it if you haven't already. Mostly because he explains why this very quickly changed.

Also, you're wrong, the comments weren't fun at all.

Well, yes, I know all this. The reason the image is so dumb (and I think you're well aware of this too) is that "All white people are racist" is actually a valid claim due to unconscious prejudices that white people and people of all races in the USA carry. To say that this is because their ancestors owned slaves is oversimplifying to the point of idiocy. It was because of the systematic separation of race in America that was brought about because of slavery, and the eventual separation between white and black slaves. Plus, this rear end in a top hat (and all the people in the comments) seems to think that because only 6% of white people in the south owned slaves, the other 94% were totally cool with black people? Did they ignore the fact that black people still weren't really citizens until the 1960s? And that we're still doing our best to take away their basic rights like voting? Did they ignore all that in black history month because they were too busy complaining about how there wasn't white history month?

Also, this quote is great:

quote:

What's awkward is when your family actually did own large plantations. But I can't go back and change what they did so I won't feel guilty.

Yeah, good thing that racism is over now and you can't do anything to help out black people today.

You've pretty much touched on all the nuance and background that most of these people are missing (and maybe deliberately ignoring). I feel like some of the discomfort some people feel over confronting the fact that they may benefit from racial oppression in some way comes from the fact that they feel like they didn't personally go out and do anything, and so they're upset that it's being suggested to them they might have to do something about it anyway.
