Aroo ran until 1965, but Jack Kent's first syndicate was in the process of dropping dead when the strip launched, so the strip never got the push that it deserved. Anybody whose real name is John just got his mind blown. Sorry about that. Bloom County Binkley's getting a little jaded, isn't he. Darthemed posted:Ripley's While it's true that the Beverly clock hasn't been wound since it was made in 1864, Wiki tells me that that's pretty much because it's not really made to be wound. Besides that, saying it hasn't been wound in so-many years isn't the same as saying it hasn't stopped in that time. It has, often for maintenance purposes. So, kind of a cop-out, Ripley's. The real story is still pretty interesting, though. The clock is "powered" by variations in atmospheric pressure and temperature. The mechanism is inside an airtight box and the expansion and contraction of the air in side that box pushes on a diaphragm that keeps the clock going. If the ambient temperature or atmospheric pressure stays the same for too long, the clock does stop until things fluctuate enough to get it running again.
