Ah yeah. I read a fair amount of the manga back in the day but I've never actually seen the anime.

The anime is ok for the most part. I still don't like anime ending though, which is why I just recommend the live action dramas instead. Other than the ending, it's a close adaptation

Alice SOS is OK.

oh geez, it's brief ED sounds like it was recorded in a karaoke booth.

Anyways, Alice (of Wonderland fame) has been kidnapped, and has disappeared from all her books and other media. Takashi, our protagonist, is a boy who loves books, Alice in Wonderland especially, so when a weird old man pops out of a book claiming to be some sort of god and asking for his help in rescuing her, he readily agrees. The god gives Takashi a basic logic test to determine his worthiness, which is too much for him, so he calls his friend, freewheeling rocker boy Toshio, to help.

It's really a pretty simple test: each color of the flag has a different color on the reverse, so what does the reverse look like.

As Toshio comes running like the good friend he is, he runs into his cutie classmate Yukari and asks her to come too. She agrees for some reason, and easily solves the simple puzzle. Takashi's neighbor and childhood friend Yomi jumps across to his room and completes their group.

Standing from left to right, we have Toshio, Yomi, and Yukari.

They're transported by the god (M-1? weird name for a god) to the Kingdom of Kings, where everyone is a king. All the kings refuse to even speak to non-royalty, and the group has decided to somehow become kings so they can inquire as to Alice's whereabouts when they're approached by some weird cat thing, who makes them climb to the top of a tall tower where Takashi is to hitch a ride on a golden sunglasses-wearing pegasus. Maybe it's supposed to make him a king? I dunno, but he rides it and the pegasus agrees to help him find Alice, so he calls his three different-sunglasses-wearing pegasi friends and they go to some place I didn't catch the name of.

The cat thing.

Also, one of the pegasi is Kamina.

The arrive at the place and there's some kind of dinosaur princess. She knows where Alice is, but wants Takashi to marry her in return for the info. They settle on a challenge to settle the matter, and the princess calls her servants, the Three Kandou Sisters, to be her champions.

The princess and her retainers.

Takashi beats the eldest sister at a game of giant othello, Toshio beats the middle sister at hot springs shiritori with the power of love, and the sisters then concede. The princess tells them that the Shadow King has Alice. She transports them to his circus-like kingdom, where they're taken prisoner.

The simian Shadow King and his monkey guards.

Luckily, they're thrown into the same cell as Alice. There's also a way out! Unfortunately it will only open if another puzzle is answered correctly. Yukari again has the answer and the door opens.

In this devilish puzzle, we have the northern and southern kings racing the 100 meter dash. The northern king finishes while the southern king is still at the 90 meter mark. They start again, running the same speeds, but this time the northern king starts 10 meters back. Who wins, or is it a tie?

They leave, making their way past the Shadow King and his guards with M-1's help, and they go home.

Alice is saved, and she returns to Takashi's totally-not-super-dweeby poster.

The end. I guess maybe each episode is going to be a new adventure to save Alice from some new threat?

I didn't really mean to write up the whole episode, but it got away from me. The show is cute enough and funny at times, but it meanders a lot and isn't much to look at. The characters are fun enough and bounce off each other reasonably well. The Kingdom of Kings bit was funny, easily my favorite part, with its shoddy kings and ramshackle palaces. Takashi's love of books and the puzzles make me wonder if the show's supposed to promote studying or something. The Japanese is pretty simple for the most part, and I was able to follow along with only small gaps. I might consider watching more if the episodes weren't ~37 minutes long. It's a bit much for what the show is.

Sakura Taisen is the quintessence of the Japanese cult-hit video game franchise. It began with a poetic vision cultivated by a dream team of accomplished creators, it survived tribulations as it took double its scheduled development time, and then it sold out within hours of its release. From there, it spawned stacks upon stacks of sequels and side games, anime series, manga, albums, and books. As if the mountains of media were not enough, Sakura Taisen musical stage shows went on regularly from July 1997 to August 2006, and a dedicated Sakura Taisen shop and cafe in Ikebukuro operated daily from June 1998 to March 2008.
