You want Ms Marvel or Silk. You don't want Spider-Gwen, it's not that great.

I really enjoyed The Last Days of an Immortal. Like a lot-- something about it reminded me of classic age sci-fi novels from the 1940s-50s.

Anything like else like that?

It's not sci-fi but consider Arsene Schrauwen.

I recommend looking into the works of Peter David at Marvel. He excels at character-driven work and is known for taking C-list, one-dimensional characters and turning them into actual personalities. Hell, one of his most famous X-Factor issues consists entirely of a psychoanalyst sitting down with the team and getting into their heads.

He has had very highly regarded runs on the Hulk and X-Factor, so there's plenty of stuff to dig into. Most of it has been collected in trades, and I'm pretty sure it's all on Marvel Unlimited.

Honestly? Yes. I know some people find it underwhelming, but it's good solid superhero team storytelling by a team that know how to do that in their sleep. Sadly it's caught up in a big old crossover right now, but it's a very good example of what a modern-style Avengers comic looks like at it's most straightforward. Kinda like watching Law & Order before you watch a show that subverts the procedural formula.

I'm not completely caught up on Avengers, but the first couple issues are fun and she's fun in them. The first 2 specifically deal with her relationship with Nova, so I'd at least check those out, but if you don't dig the book as a whole you're probably safe not reading anymore.

ANAD Avengers is ok, but really not necessary for following Ms. Marvel, as that book remains fairly self contained outside of acknowledging she's on the team. Try it if your inclined, but your probably safe skipping it otherwise.

As much as I'm looking forward to his two Batmans a month, I'm pretty bummed he's going to be locked up behind it.
I really liked the Wednesdays when two or three of his comics would drop at once.

Put Charles Soule's She-Hulk in with those!
Also, Matt Fraction's FF where her and a lady in a Thing costume were on a reserve team while the Fantastic Four were lost in space.
e: And the last last and current series of Slott's Silver Surfer which is all wacky fun with a female co-lead, before someone yells about it being a Dr Who rip-off.

Agents of Atlas are all good. Just find a reading order for all the series and minis since they are one continuous story.
I've thought the Punisher books since he came back in Civil War have all been good. They are all up on MU.

The above are all various series, one-shots, and mini series that I have read on MU since subscribing to it that I have enjoyed in one way or another. The list does not include most main hero books like Avengers, Spider-Man, ect because I have not read a ton of them. I just pick and choose what looks good that week.

The books below are interesting books that I wanted to like, but am torn because of art, story rubbing me the wrong way, or just didn't "get" it.
Daughters of the Dragon (2006), Fantastic Four: 1234, Fantastic Four/Iron Man: Big in Japan, The Last Avengers Story, Thing: Freakshow,

I started reading Silk and although I know her backstory vaguely (bitten by same spider as Peter, stuck in bunker for ten years, triggers spider-verse event, hunted by inheritors) from what I've read of Spider-Gwen and, more importantly, Spider-Woman, should I still read up on Amazing Spider-Man 1-6? It seems like a whole bunch of important backstory is glossed over in Silk 1 like her exact relationship with Peter or what happened in the bunker that feels like I should be reading that run just to get a better sense on who Silk is.

Most people will tell you no because there's a serious hatred for Dan Slott around here, that I don't really share, but if you have Marvel Unlimited I don't see why not. It's a quick read and gives you a little backstory.

Also you did know there are two different Silk series right? The current one that is on issue six, and the one from last year that ran for seven issues.

Trust me, you are taking this a lot more seriously then I am.
You'd probably be better off picking up the first series for backstory but It's not much more then whats on the box.

Do you have much DC Morrison under your belt? The wrap-around story is some of his most inscrutable stuff, and basically a sequel to Final Crisis, but the bulk of the thing, the one-shots in the middle are actually quite simple and entertaining little Elseworld jaunts (with the exception of Pax Americana, which is VERY complicated, but that's the fun of it) with really varied storytelling and a pile of great artists.
Get it.

Yeah one million doesn't have the usual Grant Morrison problem of thinking it's more clever than it actually is. Multiversity sadly doesn't escape that trap.
