Very much enjoying it, the people are lovely, there is a nice sense of solidarity, very little in the way of political bullshit amoung the average folks and its just nice to be working for something actually worthwhile as opposed to some of the utter poo poo ive done. Pays ok, i could probably get a bit more but its fine. Platform for the stuff im working on is asp.net on vb.net on sqlserver, visual studio 2010 and sql server 2008r2, so a little creaky but it works fine and stable.

The only complaints I would have is having to spend time on bullshit which is mainly about producing data for quality reports and freedom of information requests, this stuff takes time and stops you doing proper work.

But all in all highly recommended.

I'm not sure either of those necessarily clash if you treat the state as ToryCorp Inc which the current lot seem to be doing. Obviously there's nothing wrong with surveillance and banning things to better secure their control over it.
Going back to banchat, I was looking for some conc. sulphuric acid to kick some life back into my poo poo car battery, and while idly flicking around I found that you need a license to buy nitric acid now.
It can be nasty stuff, so storeholder due diligence might be expected, like 'what are you planning to do with it?' and 'do you have safe storage/PPE?' but a license made me think there must be some kind of specific recent government thing behind it.

And there is, last year under some 'explosives precursor' type affair. Best laugh is that according to suppliers the license only applies to individuals, and any limited company in an appropriate industry is exempt, so someone could just register Albert Nusra & Sons Plate Etching Ltd. and bypass it.
To add insult to that, you can still get sulphuric acid and various nitrate salts in whatever quantity you want and make it. I wouldn't want to do it myself, distilling nitric acid is unpleasant and dangerous enough on paper, but for someone who wanted to make explosives that would be far from the most dangerous step involved. So it looks like the only people really inconvenienced are those would would be using it for legit purposes and are casual/self employed.

I'm glad that the government are taking decisive steps to protect us from terrorists who don't have any working knowledge of chemistry or £15 to register a company though.

I'd say that TT posts about "politics that involves students" rather than "student politics"; I wouldn't count a 64 year old man using his contacts in the media to get one over on someone who said they didn't like him (who just happens to be a student) as an example of student politics, for example.

Word. Dog-piling does nothing to combat bigotry and just serves to shore up our own egos so we can backslap each other about how right-on we are. Like in student politics. It's all virtue signaling, really, like tweeting your outrage or signing online petitions.

online petitions should be useful and I think it's unfair to say that people should know better than expecting a government to give a gently caress about it's singular method of interaction with the public outside a general election.

I think there are times when the weight of public opinions outmatches the government/minster's investment in a course of action and they do actually manage to affect some small amount of change. For the all of 5-10s of time spent, that makes them a fairly benign activity that are occasionally beneficial and more often than not the naysayers aren't actually advocating campaigning in other forms.
