I had completely forgotten that Coolio was a person that actually existed. Does Araki know English or not? On one hand he's a huge fan of all this music and he read Holes, or at least read an advanced copy of the movie script or something before any of that would exist in Japanese, but then I've also heard he loved New Wave because the lyrics were meaningless to him so it was just noise he could write to without distraction.

Given that there's over a decade between New Wave fizzling out and Holes being written its entirely possible that he knows english but didn't learn it until the early 90's.

It's not at all uncommon for a Japanese person to have a real hard time speaking English, but can read the same word no problem. The Japanese school system heavily emphasizes reading, to the detriment of everything else, because it's all geared towards standardized testing.
