Question for those pro job hunters out there, relating to LinkedIn specifically (though probably also in general tbh). I've been in one field for almost 10 years and I'm looking to change my career course to something similar but also very different, requiring more tools and skills that I'm slowly teaching myself with online courses in my free time, so I can eventually add something to a portfolio. Having had horrible luck with recruiters in the past, ie. only got responses from those who just wanted to pump and dump short term freelance creative work for extra payouts or whatever, I'm not entirely sure how to target people / eyeballs for the right things. Actually, I feel like I'm being skipped over having done a lot with some relatively big places. Keeping that information in mind, though it's likely not essential to this, how would you structure your profile to imply that you're aiming to do different things and searching for new challenges, while still being fully employed and skilled in a few different areas? ianskate fucked around with this message at 04:07 on Feb 19, 2016 |

I applied to position X like 8 months ago. It was never filled, and was recently re-posted. I found somebody on LinkedIn who held that position about a year ago and moved up in the firm. I would like position X. 1. Is it appropriate to reach out to this person? 2. How should I go about it/ what should I say?

When being contacted by head hunters it's usually rather easy to find out what position they are recruiting for. Is it better to go apply directly at the company website or go through the headhunting? Since I am also in a hiring/recruiting role at my current position I have the feeling that profiles from head hunters/ recruiting agencies actually have a better chance of being seen - at least if it's a high profile position and a recruiting agencies we're actually working with and is putting effort into it, and not just one that spams resumes. So I guess my question actually is, how do I find out if the headhunter belongs to the first or second category?

I have the most annoying problem with linked in. I am not job searching, I've turned my profile to "Friends Only" (disabled public search and view), and yet some how I am still getting jobs coming my way that I really don't want. WTF, do I just have to delete my account?

Is there a way to keep my linkedin activity secret from people who I'm already connected with? I've connected with most of the people at my small engineering company, but in the new year I'm moving abroad so trying to line up a job for then - and for my industry in the country I'm moving to, linkedin is a primary recruitment method. Obviously I dont want to tip off my workplace to my moving before I absolutely have to.

Should I just post my complete resume on Linkedin? I can't think of anything else to post for my profile. Also how do some people have 500+ connections? Perhaps if they added all their co-workers and their friend's friends? Do recruiters contact you via PM or send emails? Not like I have much exp getting offers...

I have a lot of connections because whenever someone gives me a business card, I connect with them on LinkedIn and then throw their card in a drawer. LinkedIn is my self-updating rolodex, and it's been useful when I've needed random services---chemical cleaning heat exchangers or renting some chillers or whatever.

Don't put your resume on linkedin just your company name and grossly inflated job title. I seriously can't find a single person who isn't a senior lead manager vice president director on linkedin anymore, it's bizarre how people fight for those meaningless titles even when they are doing entry level helpdesk poo poo. Oh and be sure to put that you're the founder and CEO of whatever home business you started even if you never incorporated and have never tried to make any money with it, that seems to be mandatory for linkedin profiles in 2016.

I have 700ish connections cause I added most of the people I went to school with, any vendors/salespeople/gas station attendants I ever met while working, most people that I work with plus all the execs (which is about 200 people total that I know in real life) and then 500 people in HR or engineering (I am an engineer) positions at companies I may want to work for or in cities I may want to work or who are in groups I am in. Also I added some tech recruiters but they seem to be accepting everyone so I didn't feel too uncomfortable vs it's that guy I recall from 7th period HS English. Ofc there is social anxiety involved even with the internet.

Accepting a LinkedIn request is really low-commitment, so a lot of people are effectively running an open network. If you find someone who has very few connections or joined recently, then you might want to worry about sending a request, but otherwise it's generally not an issue.

Absent minded clicking, or you should assume as much until otherwise shown. A lot of people (like me) import email contacts into Linkedin and if you do so, anyone that emails you or that you email yourself has a good chance of showing up in the huge fuckoff list of people it gives you the option of connecting with. If he did add you for a specific reason, it's either because he wants to take a more in-depth look at your experience or to keep tabs on you in general for whatever reason. Whether he actually did or didn't, that is one very good reason why it pays to really put thought into the content of your profile and make deliberate decisions about what to list and how best to display it.

Try as I might, I can't for the life of me get my profile completeness up to 100%. I have a professional profile picture, all the header information filled out, a summary, all of my experience (six years in industry), skills & endorsements, my full education profile, interests, honors, awards, certifications, volunteer work and causes I support, organizations, and projects. I can't think of anything else I could possibly add save for some random high school accomplishments and my SAT/ACT scores, which I think is a pretty tacky thing to add at this point. Any thoughts?

If they're moving away from prioritizing "fully complete" profiles in recruiter searches, then that's great. I'd love to keep my profile on the leaner side and focus on my more substantial accomplishments as opposed to fluffing stuff up. You're saying that's definitely the case, then?
