I think SS looks like cheap, gaudy crap. Maybe that's what they're going for. The only thing I liked in that trailer was Deadshot. Killer Croc looks like a joke and watching him talk is even worse. Zany Boomerang guy and Harley Quinn are both utterly unamusing. Joker looks like a cretin.

I think there's a difference between using a solid music cue in your trailer, and coasting on the strength of your music cues. Suicide Squad's trailers are so firmly in the latter camp it hurts.

I think if there's any recent trailer that is what you're talking about, it's the Star Trek Beyond trailer, but even then it's really hard not to enjoy a trailer set to Beastie Boys music. edit: The difference is that, for Guardians, the music is actually a part of the movie, like a plot point. Suicide Squad is more like Great Gatsby, which also used really strong musical cues in it's trailers.

I would give Star Trek's Beastie Boys trailer more points for being a curious juxtaposition with what you'd expect from the series. I also think GotG's Hooked on a Feeling trailer worked much better-- it's always been a ridiculous song, so amping it up to have this pounding action beat and pairing it with bizarre alien imagery tells you about the tone of that movie. The Suicide Squad trailers don't have that kind of striking juxtaposition. The forced association with these classic songs feels desperate and cynical, rather than novel or cohesive.

I look at that and see a pretty incredible prosthetic job of a guy with crocodile skin, like that practically looks like they found a guy with a particular type of skin disease. Also holy poo poo he's got a crocodile jacket on. Because of course he does.
