Out of curiosity, does anyone know the name of the song that plays when Sara kicks the poo poo out of you near the start of chapter 2? It's really loving good and I'm having no luck finding it on my own.

I know it shouldn't surprise me after playing so many Falcom games at this point, but every time I play another one, I'm still taken back by how amazing these soundtracks are. :allears:

Also, Jesus christ Sara is the best. I just had the hugest loving grin on my face as she beat the poo poo out of Machias and Jusis to make them go with their group assignments. That whole bit was really hilarious for me.

It's the Final Countdown.
The only problem I have with the soundtracks of Falcom games is their lack of diversity and experimentation. Most of the themes are unnecessarily power metal, even when the situation doesn't call for it.

Kind of looking at Ys specifically, but even in The Legend of Heroes boss fights does it devolve mainly into power metal rather than composing around a character's personality traits or other ongoing details. The dissonance is almost jarring.

I don't agree. If you want extremely weird and experimental, there's always Provincialism Ys.

The Brandish series is filled with all kinds of varied tracks depending on the installment, the Perfect Collection Sorcerian trilogy has stuff like rock-meets-jazz Kukeiha Club-style fusion, Ys V has an almost Square-like and orchestral soundtrack, the entire Gagharv Trilogy is measured and reserved tracks, the waltzes and weird piano-bass in Revival Xanadu 2, the spooky and futuristic tone of RINNE, the traditional Japanese tone of Sengoku Sorcerian and the later VM Japan (a later Vantage Master entry) et cetera.

I know they're most well known for their power metal soundtracks, and I personally love that too so I don't agree there either, but I'd say Falcom has a huge amount of stuff outside of the extremely tiny lens you're looking through, most likely because you've only been exposed to Ys 1-4, 6, OiF, Origin, Celceta, Origin and 7, and the Kiseki titles.

It's kind of unfair to call out the boss fights for not composing around a character's personality and themes when in SC only, like, 2 characters have unique boss themes made for them rather than either their group or just generic boss theme; the two that do have themes have ones that fit in with character details and the enforcer theme is fitting for the group as a whole. Unless you just absolutely hate power metal, in which case all power metal is unnecessary.

It's not that they can't compose character themes, it's just that they only had the time/budget/whatever to compose a couple so they chose the penultimate and final boss. It's the same reason every cave/tunnel/mine has the same theme and every grassy path has the same theme, etc. I'm sure any composer would love to write unique themes for everything, if given the chance, but time/budget is probably not going to be on your side unless you're Final Fantasy. You know, games that sell at least 2000% of what this series sells.

In terms of variety, I guess my bar is kind of low though. Over the years Motoi Sakuraba has lowered it down to "if it's not another one of his tracks, it's probably varied enough just for not being so". Even within same-series Falcom has yet to reach that point for me since CS compared to FC/SC compared to Zero/Ao are all different enough.

Abyss has a few really cool songs and i loved the game but i didn't really dig the soundtrack that much as a whole

though honestly i guess even when it comes to falcom games the ones that have whole soundtracks i love rather than a handful of really awesome songs are the more obscure, experimental ones that aren't officially in english

I noticed (in CS still) that, during an optional bonding scene with Fie, we planted some flowers. Ever since they've been a recurring thing on the schoolyard that I can check out. Would she have planted those without Rean? It seems like a big thing for her so I highly doubt it wouldn't happen but it would also be kinda cool if this only progresses based on my decisions.

Also, I have 20 U-material right now, do I buy the cat ears

For what it's worth, the Vita version's frame drops are all during big establishing shots for cities and towns. All the battles and action-heavy cutscenes run just fine.

The only issue I've had with the Vita version other than the load times, is that I didn't realize tapping the portraits switched characters for a while. So when my thumb accidentally strayed, I thought my left shoulder button was busted or something.

I believe she'd have planted these without Rean. The gardening club has a rather supportive president after all.

My personal suggestion would be to hang on to the U-material. Weapons start costing more and more U-material to upgrade as you progress through the game and having a cache on hand will allow you to afford some upgrades right off the bat when you get to a new town.

Amppelix

Oh boy does the ps3 drop frames. When the number of character models on screen starts to exceed 10, it doesn't take for much else to happen on screen for the framerate to start looking extremely shaky. Especially in Heimdallr, where every environment is huge, whenever the entire class gets together it's rough going.

By the way, I have a hot take on Gaius: he's boring :geno:

Ok yea obviously she has a black cat familiar of some sort, she has moon imagery, she has mysterious magical poo poo, blah blah she's a witch or whatever passes for those. (I wonder if anyone besides me reading this thread needs these spoilers, but oh well)

But the game's been taunting me with these clues for a long-rear end time now, so if at some point some doesn't just go "Ok Emma why don't you just tell us what the gently caress you doin" and she goes "Ok fine here it is" or alternatively Rean just figures it out, I'm going to be... mildly annoyed.

Emma's real deal is that she should have turned left at Albuquerque and was actually trying to go to Bravely Default.

ImpAtom
May 24, 2007

Emma's deal is that she has a secret that could probably get her killed or tortured and is surrounded by people who are by their very nature untrustworthy and likely to end up on the opposite side in a war so she isn't really interested in revealing it to them. It's a significantly different situation than the other character's secrets which are all public knowledge to most people or which are more personal and not "you don't want this being publicly spread."

I may have my complaints about some of the characters, but I am overall extremely impressed with CS' writing. Especially everything involving the political situation is nicely nuanced and interesting stuff. All the opposing factions seem like they have their points, there's no clear villain anywhere besides the obvious fanaticals who're willing to kill to reach their agenda, and even then you have to be slightly sympathetic towards them because Osborne is clearly up to something. And speaking of him, he does a real good job of playing a villain without actually being one (yet? Can't wait to fight him in CS2 (I don't actually know if this happens)), constantly seeming like a threat but a threat towards what, exactly? All his underlings seem like fairly reasonable people but can you really trust any of them? Etc.

It kinda feels like the opposite of Sky, which had extremely solid character writing everywhere imo, but there was never really much attempt to make the overall premise more complex than "Bad Guys want to destroy the world/country". Not that that's bad or anything. I'm not sure if could even say I like one style more than the other. And of course, all of this could be thrown under the rug in CS2 as the real evil manipulating everything reveals itself and proceeds to gloat in everyone's collective face. I'm hoping it doesn't come down to everyone uniting against a common enemy though, I'm really interested in seeing how these politics play themselves out.

I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts on beating the game. I thought I had the story pretty well figured out by the halfway point but was blindsided by several developments by the end.

I think CS' characters are actually written pretty well on account of them not being one-note. They are introduced that way for sure but everyone has some layers that make them feel more human than the anime tropes they are introduced as.

To be honest, comparing Cold Steel to Sky SC is kinda comparing apples and oranges because the first games in each arc seem to have the purpose of setting the stage while the second chapters are there to make lots of things go boom on a big scale. In that respect, you're better off comparing CS to FC, which also had antagonists with goals you may not have agreed with, but could nevertheless understand.

Since Erebonia is a much larger and more diverse country than Liberl with a very different history to boot, its internal politics ARE indeed a lot more complex.

I'm more comparing it to Sky as a whole (well, the whole that has been released in english). And even then, in FC the mysterious men in black / intelligence division is basically the only antagonistic faction around. All your conflict is in the end against them somehow. So the same basic plot of "there are bad guys stop them" applies even if it's not quite so obvious as it is in SC.
