So yeah low I guess.

Private sector pay is largely irrelevant in most public sector jobs. They tend to set the pay scale based on years of service and the work itself is pretty slow paced. People take the job though because of retirement benefits and so they can follow basic procedures from 9-5 every day.

Actually I think good cobol programmers are still doing quite well.

Also note the quotes around specialized. It just means I have a deep knowledge of many technolgies, like a virtualization admin needs server OS, desktop OS, network, and storage knowledge.

They're trying grab anyone who's into Network-Security whether that's entry or senior level. HR should probably work with IT more to be more specific just with either Senior, Mid or Entry Level.

This isn't a Rouge IT Job Ad Posting.

It depends on your role.

If you're into Sales or an Account Manager then having a knowledge base of a mile-wide an inch deep is essentially required but if you're say a Senior Network Engineer then just stick to Networking.

That said, I'd sort of expect any IT Professional especially anyone Senior to still have some understanding when it comes to IT in general such as Databases, Identity, etc but your primary focus should be getting specialized on your particular technical subset.

Aren't you an IT Manager or CIO Adorai?

Cobol has been around since the 60s, is an enormously successful programming language but technology has progressed.

Granted there's plenty of business-value generated, COBOL Programmers are still sought after, make nearly 6-figures however these guys are only going to find work at older organizations such as big banks, older tech and at the Suburban Corporate HQ in a select handful cities not the trendy Downtown Office.

What I intend from this post is that you can't say that specialization is a good/bad career choice but that it depends but if you're focusing on a Career in IT (not TAM/IT Management/Sales) I'd strongly err on the side of specialization.

RE: Austin chat.

Yeah living in the city is an absolute pain in the dick. Live north or south, within city limits, and enjoy cheaper rent. You can get ok 1brs for between 8 and 950, great 1brs for 1100. If you live with roommates you can rent great houses for 500-750 a month, depending on number of roommates.

I'm native and it sucks. If you end up working in the tech corridor along 360/mopac/183 then you could easily live in Pflugerville, RR, or Cedarpark and commute down with a 30 min commute, stretching to 40 in real bad traffic. Until Mopac rebuild is done I definitely wouldn't live south, though. My commute was an hour and a half until my boss relented and I could start coming in at 9:30 instead of 9. Now its just 45 minutes.

I thought the traffic problems were mostly related to moving North-South.

Is it worth living outside Austin proper? As a single-male with no kids being able to walk to bars - plural - is a priority.

As someone who recently moved back from a brief stint in Austin, you're not going to be walking to any bars unless you live 5 blocks from Rainey or East 6th.

Unless your idea of 'fun' living is a 3-5br McMansion in Round Rock/Pflugerville or Anderson Mill area, I'd say hell no it's not worth it. There are some nice places in the Barton Hills/Zilker area and decent apartments in the South Congress area. I guess what I'm saying is if I had to move back to Austin it'd be south of the river and bonus, the commute Downtown isn't nearly as hellacious as coming in from the North/West/East.

My dad was (is) one of those mile deep specialists with a little too much loyalty to his specialty. I've seen it screw him over multiple times. I feel like if he'd branch out he'd be doing better but he's in that generation where loyalty to the company/brand was supposedly a good thing.

I'm not sure how many more times I can handle a situation of being handed over a project to implement that is just a list of stuff that's been sold and when I ask "where's the document that details the client's requirements, and our proposed solution?" I am met with blank stares.

Your overall deployment process probably needs some work, then. We used to run into situations like yours quite a bit, but after enough pressure from the delivery team and more integration with presales, we were able to reduce the number of headaches from poorly written proposals/incorrect BOMs. We typically confer with presales ahead of time before they go piling on hardware and services to make sure that what they're selling is in line with reality. Specific requirements gathering and design is actually on us, as the delivery engineers; however, we usually have a good deal of input into the proposal and statement of work ahead of time so even if the person doing the implementation wasn't involved, they can be sure that someone else on the team was. In cases where things are messed up (this typically happens at the end of the government's fiscal year, where they suddenly get a week to spend a massive amount of money), we work with our PMs and contract personnel to modify the scope of work and order additional hardware to satisfy the customer's needs.

Are Juniper's screenos devices still in wide use, or are they mostly being supplanted by the newer junos stuff? I've been working on screenos for a year and am taking on a more senior role with them now. I'm wondering if the experience I'm getting with them is worth much.

The south > north traffic got way worse recently:
http://patch.com/texas/downtownaustin/austin-nightmarish-traffic-worsened-mopac-lane-closures

The day the above happened I was in traffic for >2 hours if I remember right, for a 24 mile commute. It hasn't been that bad since, but now I come in later.

Anyway, living in northish austin near breweries can be cool, but really nothing compares to South Congress/East 6th for that. If you're a bike person you can live further out and make a pretty good compromise: 15-20 minute bike ride to bars isn't too bad. If you wanna continue convo just PM me so we don't poo poo up the thread.

Had a brief meeting with our general manager this morning, he asked me to find every penny I can cut out of my budget (even though I already did). We may have a freeze on all unnecessary projects as cash flow is low and this winter season was awful.

He also talked about shuffling staff around or laying some people off, since if there are no projects, they won't be needed.

Sounds like it's time to update my resume and :yotj: out of here.

Is seasonal lows an uncommon occurrence in your company? If so, yea probably should dust off the resume..

We laid off a guy last year citing no project money, but then my boss spend 3.5 million on unnecessary upgrades to 100G in the same project scope. Not that this is a similar issue, but "project cash flow" seems like an easy way to let go of people where I'm at.
