Very well put, i agree.

I have not worked with Cloud services in a while and i am sure they handle a lot of things very good now. I have done a lot of work for clients that want extreme performance. Bloomberg for example paid a huge Bonus for every ms i was able to shave off of certain financial transactions below an already tight threshold. I spent a week optimising the C++ and rewriting parts of the compiler for their platform to milk that cash cow.

I also remember re-writing their ftp client and server to give them faster file transfers which looking back was a really crazy linux kernel hack that was scary as gently caress. I basically dropped some of the handshaking and headers, replaced it with a more "optimized" version. It worked remarkably well though. Downside was, it would not work on any other kernel and not to be used outside the intranet for security reasons. Amazing how much time you can save if you know where you are and who you are talking to. That was when i was 20 years younger though, today i am semi retired.

Now, i know this is not something games need to concern themselves with since they would never need such optimization. You are completely right though when you say that the Hardware becomes irrelevant when you have lovely developers that lock up the CPU and IO because they never worked in a multi-threaded networked environment. We both know that CIG most likely does not have a professional on board that has any experience with real networking applications as evident by the state of the Alpha. They might have some networking guys from CryTek but that stuff is as you said trivial compared to a MMO environment and the heavy use of XML is kind of showing how inexperienced they are.

It will be really fun to watch this from a technical perspective. So far i have nto seen anything that would impress me. The whole Alpha is basically a CryEngine mod with some really bad code hacks that will bite them in the rear end later on.

TL;DR
Back in the olden days! Get off my kernel young code monkeys!

I base my assumptions on the quality of a game by watching gameplay and thinking to myself "Does this look fun?"

Case in point. I watched about ten minutes of Grow Home and bought it immediately and played it until I beat it.

Watching SC I can't help but still be looking for the fun. You can't add in fun after the base mechanics are in. Maybe you can but it can't be easy. The core mechanics should be fun already. Grow Home would be fun if BUD was stuck in a box with a few enemies and a jet pack. Not for long but it would be fun.

Where is the fun, CIG?

What are the chances that if this gets delivered to CIG LA, Croberts tries to plug it into a regular outlet. "Can someone bring me an adapter for this server?"

It's a quick aside to Ben - about deleting footage of "our bag joke" from that episode.

I will find the timestamp because it's frankly surreal when you stop and consider what's happening. Deleting the affair was not that surprising-- as noted at the time, the optics were terrible and you needn't be following the daily tv show unfolding here to recognize it.

But the desire to call quick attention to the Orwellian deletion so that it might be re-contextualized -- for critics, perhaps especially goons -- as just a little joke between friends? It's very much like getting on a livestream after years of explicitly NOT admitting you're married to the boss and allegedly coercing employees into saying nothing about it under penalty of termination and then, when it became impossible to keep up the lie, just casually mentioning on a company livestream before a big crowd, "yes Chris is my husband it's not a secret".

We've always been a war with Eastasia.

It is real! So watching this thanks for this, another amazing write up. :)
