To break up the PuLiRuLa mind fuckery, here's some Galaga '88 requested by FredMSloniker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E13ZSLukSk So I've figured out what game I was talking about when I thought Galaga was a horizontal shooter. The game was Gradius, which I feel better having figured out.

AMovieReference posted:To break up the PuLiRuLa mind fuckery, here's some Galaga '88 requested by FredMSloniker. To answer a few questions from the video: Galaga '88 has a dimension system, where each level after the first few has one or more parallel dimension versions. Higher dimensions, as I understand it, are harder, but have more scoring opportunities; they also have different graphics, changing gradually as the dimension number goes up (something like Eversion). In order to increase your dimension, you have to have two of the powerups that were dropping from ice crystals when you reach certain points in the game. (I believe it's immediately after each bonus round, but it's been a while.) If you do, they shoot out and explode, creating a dimensional rift. (If you only have one, it shoots out and explodes, but doesn't have enough energy to make a rift, so you stay in your current dimension.) The map shown at the end of the game shows which dimension you were in when you went through each set of levels. Two things to note about this: if you take a look at the map, you'll notice that there's a very early opportunity to jump dimensions, before you saw any of the powerups. You have to (if I recall correctly) get two of the combining enemies to combine, then kill them while they're combined, on each of the first two levels to get them to drop those powerups. Also, Dimension 1 ends after the second set of levels; again, if I recall correctly, you're forced up a dimension at that point if you don't qualify anyway. I played a lot of this in high school, thanks to being near a mall that had a couple video games just scattered around. I was never terribly good at it, but one thing I did see that you guys didn't is that, if you get your dual ship captured by an alien, you can rescue that to form a triple ship, which is a single ship about the size of the double ship that adds a central shot to the two side shots. Not having a gap right in the middle of your fireppower is handy. They won't, if I recall, try to capture a triple ship.

The thrilling continuation of Pu-li-ru-la. Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvDbu0Eg7gA Truly it's less a game and more a.... happening. Get the time back. Oh no. Indeed. I thought they were a super bomb or something we couldn't figure out how to work. That sounds like a pretty good way to keep the Galaga model interesting on multiple playthroughs... if only I'd seen it in my younger arcade years, I can see myself having memorized every secret route in the map. Instead I had to busy myself with the never-registered three level free demo of Woflenstein 3d. Sigh... never did get to see that mecha hitler.

You've gotten through a bunch of my arcade favorites growing up, save for Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara, Magic Sword, Captain America and the Avengers, and Crisis Zone. I don't know how well you can emulate Crisis Zone though. Captain America and the Avengers has some of my favorite off dialogue in a game. There was some Spider-man game that I'd seen everywhere but never played too. Played Area 51 a bunch too, never got very good at getting the secret rooms though. Thanks this is a fun trip down memory lane. Also your first Alien vs Predator video points to a best of 2015 video.

Yeah, I'm thinking Crisis Zone would be a literal bitch to play on an emulator, as would games that SERIOUSLY relied on the gun peripheral such as Silent Scope or Gunblade. I remember putting dollars into that game and my hands would be shaking for about ten minutes afterwards. As for suggestions, I do think there's a few beat em ups that need to be experienced, such as The Ninja Kids (Bad translations and I think your characters are ninja marionettes, I dunno, it's not explained very well) and B. Rap Boys (The literal sequel to DJ Boys, only with more male dancers and slightly less implied racism). Also, NARC. I'm thinking you gotta do NARC.

Alright, here's some one off games this week to hopefully make things more interesting. This game was a game that Nick somehow played on the Gameboy back in the 90's, called "Avenging Spirit." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUGcgfoz9yc It's pretty neat, and we actually didn't know it was an arcade game until we booted up a bootleg Korean version called, "Monkey Elf" and Nick somehow recognized it.

So I guess we should have done our due diligence to figure out who mentioned this in the forums somewhere, but we played Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y67TPDqHRS4 It was a pretty fun game, but Keith and Kyle decided to talk about the flagship product from Trouble Planet ad nauseam.

I was getting a serious vibe off Wonder Boy, and for good reason: the original game of this series was the basis for the NES game Adventure Island. It was the rocks that trip you up that really gave it away for me.

The whole Wonder Boy/Adventure Island series chronology is amazingly convoluted, and the Adventure Island overlap is just the beginning of it. Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair is the lesser-known of two completely different Wonder Boy IIIs, and the last game in the series (Monster World IV) is either Wonder Boy 5 or 6 depending upon how you're counting.

I don't think there's enough information on the net to definitively order the games they've played by date of release. It might be interesting to see a chronology of when they played the games, though, as they do release the videos out of order and you could watch the descent into insanity more organically that way if you wanted to.

Huh. Any reason why the opening title and some of the in-game art assets are strikingly reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog? Did they recycle some of the stuff when they started working on the Mega Drive, or was it just common artists/etc? There were even creatures that looked like the birds from Flickie in there. (Oh yeah, we should add Flickie to the list sometime.) Spica was really cool. I wish arcade games remained mainstream in the U.S. long enough to give us more games with slick 2d animated sprites like you see in this game. Pixels are fine and good, but there's more to the world than Atari aesthetics. Edit: woah: We missed some cool poo poo on the other paths. Maybe we should revisit Spica sometime?

And since it's Thursday, here is the end to Spica Adventure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1wdOzXenwA There's a lot of these games where I kind of want to go back and do something with them, and Spica would be one of them for sure. We actually got together last weekend to try and record some episodes to hold us over until we can meet up for a week and pump out episodes, and recorded some requests. To several requests, we got the Captain America game recorded (to coincide with the movie release today [Sorry Hoss Corncave]), and a few other requests. I'll have to see if Nick is cool with the idea of having someone know where he lives, but I was thinking it'd be kind of cool to have someone be a fourth player for a few games if they live near Nashville, where we plan to record our next "session". Just an idea I was considering, not sure if it would work out well.

CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE AVENGERS begins this week. Watch out comic fans, it was made in a culture that favors vastly different flavors of comic book. (Robots are for loving, not for saving lives.) Fun thing is, when I loaded this episode, the ads from Youtube were for dating Arab singles. Not sure if that's SEO related somehow or if it's just panicking finding a way to make me less lonely. Good luck, adsense! I'm a goddamn let's player! Oh, and hear Kyle's neat near death experience. All in the course of violating Marvel's precious canon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBANZ2GB0D4
