Hey thread! My wife and I are planning to stop in Vegas as part of our Southwest road trip honeymoon. I have a few questions I figured you gentlegoons could help answer:

a) is there enough to see and do in Las Vegas that we'd absolutely no question want to spend two nights there rather than one? neither of us is interested in gambling or strippers, but we greatly enjoy shows and walking around and sightseeing -- on the other hand we don't want to cut short our time at places like Mesa Verde or Monument Valley later on

b) has anyone stayed at Oasis at Gold Spike? It looks like a cool place to stay, from the website and what I've heard elsewhere (including NPR). Or failing that, anything else with a similar vibe (and price...) that you can recommend?

c) how much of the themed décor is left at places like Luxor, Caesar's, or Excalibur? I've read that they're really toned down from about 10 years ago, but I've always wanted to see the chintzy Vegas take on Classical art and architecture...

d) how far in advance can/should we make a reservation at Lotus of Siam?

I think that's it for now - the thread's already been very helpful from just the OP!

TheReverend

a) I would think so. Double so if you have a car. You could see red rock canyon during the day and hoover dam. At night you can do all the fun vegas stuff. You'll probably want some time to go downtown and walk the strip.

c)Caesar's doesn't seem kitchy to me, but there are some roman styled things there. Excal and Luxor have really toned it down but you'd probably find more of it in Luxor. If you want kitch, circus circus is your friend.

d)If you know what day and what time you want to eat just go ahead and make the reservation. That said last July we got to eat (on a weekday) my just phoning them in the morning (but at a 9pm reservation).

a) Just walking up and down the strip, eating a few tasty meals and checking out downtown will easily keep you busy for 3 days. Whether you want to cut into other parts of your trip is up to you, but Vegas really is like no place else, and you'll certainly have a blast if you spend a couple nights there.

b) Never stayed there, seems pretty neat. The only downside is that it's downtown, which is about 15-20 minute cab from the strip, where most of what you want to see is.

c) You won't be let down. The Venetian and Bellagio are huge and must-sees as well.

Architecture wise, stay out of the cheap casinos. The Venetian/Palazzo, Bellagio, Caesar's Palace, and Wynn/Encore are stunning. Aria/City Center is great if you like modern. The rest is poo poo.

In regards to Lotus, let me know and I'll get you dialed in.

Best location to rent a car if staying on the strip and only needing a car for two days? Going to make a road trip to LA to see some friends and go hit Disneyland, during the middle of my trip. Won't need a car for the beginning or end of stay.

A lot of hotels have rental desks in them. Otherwise the main hub by the airport is your best bet.

I've been hearing of casinos planning to attract younger players by introducing games of skill (having successfully lobbied Nevada to amend their gaming regulations to allow that):

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/las-vegas-reinvents-casinos-after-suffering-revenues-and-new-state-regulations/

Has anyone heard anything about when and where this will actually start showing up? This sounds like something I'd like to check out.

Luxor and Excalubur are essentially TGI Fridays on the strip, devoid of any and all charm they might have once had. Don't bother. If you like fun cheesiness, check out New York New York and Paris.

Caesar's was starting to get pretty run-down, but in the last few years they did a major remodel and is looking quite a bit better. It's not quite as impressive as some of the newer/grander casinos - Cosmopolitan, Venetian, and Bellagio are the must-sees in my opinion, architecture-wise. I feel the Venetian does everything Caesar's does, but much better, particularly the faux-outdoor mall area.

There is nothing remarkable to me about the Cosmopolitan from an architecture or aesthetics standpoint. Walking through it is entirely boring other than the chandelier and the lobby. I mean, I guess if you're doing an architecture tour it's worth the pass through from the Aria/Crystals to the Bellagio but meh. The rooms are great and the food is incredible there but it's an exercise in the use of blacks and purple in contemporary structure.

It's going to be a tricky thing to solve because you don't want a greasy MLG gamer guy to sit in the casino for 20 hours at a time taking up all the house money.

If it's parimutuel then no one is going to want to play against the guy who's just killing it and they have no chance.

There's this one demo of a game where I think it's like 5 card poker. Everyone gets two cards. The rest of the cards (3 *N of them, where N is the number of players) are quickly shown one by one on the center of the screen. If you tap your button first when a card is shown, you get that card. After everyone has 5 cards it's played like normal 5 card poker. So far I think this is the best idea that combines chance, skill, and a level of play that most people can enter without feeling like they are getting fleeced.

So: I'm headed to Vegas for a job fair that'll happen on June 22, but am staying a few days around it for fun and other stuff (flying in on Sunday, leaving on a Sat morning red-eye most likely). The job fair's at the Monte Carlo: however, the group rate for it sucks, and I was able to find cheaper stuff using the Team Funemployment site. I'm trying to decide between the SLS, Hard Rock, Palms or maybe the Vdara, and could use a bit of a review either way.

Also, a few questions:
--Where's probably the best sports book to go to on my off time? Euro 2016 is co-inciding with my trip, so obviously I'd want to chill out and put a little money on the football. (That, and I'd like to make money off a Cardinals win for once.)
--Which casinos have Sigma Derby, as that's probably the one thing I'm wanting to see when I go to the gambling floor (mostly I play poker, as I've had a bit of problems with blackjack in the past)?
--The pinball museum: how much is it via taxi/Uber, and is it worth it?
--And finally: what clubs would be best for a 27-yr old quasi-hipster with a taste for whiskey and the fairer sex?

1. I don't know if anyone would call it the 'best' (They all seem pretty similar to me, honestly), but I have to pitch the Wynn Sportsbook because they literally did me a solid when I lost a 4-figure winning sports ticket and investigated things and ended up paying out for me. It was a supremely lovely moment, but I can say they have excellent customer service!

2. Not familiar with this game so I'll have to pass one this one

3. I think so, if you're any sort of a nerd with appreciation for pinball both new and old. He's got probably 100 machines in there plus 20-30 arcade classics. Super nice guy too, whose around tinkering with old machines all day. It's only a couple miles from the strip, so if you're not getting there for less than $20 you're getting hosed. Google map it and keep your cabbie on task.

4. As a 35 year old married nerd (see above), I can't help you here. I like whiskey and women plenty though :colbert:

It's about as far apart as two hotels can be on and still both be called "On the Strip". That said, I'm pretty sure the SLS has a monorail stop, so if you get on there and ride it the full length, it should drop you pretty close to the Monte Carlo.

I just checked and indeed it does have its own stop on the Monorail. And with resort fees included it's still like $50/night cheaper than staying at the Monte Carlo even with the discounted rate (and I'm not required to stay there), so even though they're somewhat far apart it works out quite well on my end.

I haven't stayed there, but the SLS is pretty nice and new, so the rooms are probably solid. That being said, I'd personally just go for one of the places on the strip. If you don't care too much about room quality, you can get good deals on the strip. Also, keep in mind that the SLS doesn't have poker, so if you're going to be playing all night and want to wander back to your room, that'll be a bit of a pain.

There has to be a decent amount of luck in a game to make it a good casino game. All 100% skill games are just going to be dominated by a few pros. If you want to play chess or CS or whatever, there are normal tournaments for that already that can match you based on your relative skill levels. I don't see why any new player would want to just sit down next to some professionals and drop some money when there's a 100% chance they're going to lose.

Some more beatable games would be awesome, even though the author seems really positive that casinos will not want to offer them.

Blackjack and video poker still make a ton of money for casinos, even though they are beatable with enough skill, so hopefully we'll see some others. The limit poker machines were as well, although I'm not sure if they are still around.

Given the number of decks most casinos use nowadays, the potential edge in blackjack is not very big. On top of that, casinos actively try to root out advantage blackjack players.

Video poker is only beatable with certain, very specific payouts that are very hard, if not impossible to find nowadays. Most of the games aren't beatable.

Limit Heads Up Poker is a solved game, so by definition it's not beatable. They did release those games before the game was officially claimed to be solved, but I suspect they either had solved it already and not published the result, or were so close to solving it that any potential edge would be minuscule.

Games where you only compete against other players can be raked while still being fair, so I think they're a great place to start. The key is finding games that have a good balance of luck and skill, lucky enough where amateurs can win relatively regularly, but skill-based enough where skilled players have a long term edge and can beat the rake.

Basically, everybody needs to play poker.
