Chrome and Firefox are both pretty resource intensive on regular PCs, not just tablets. Chrome used to be a lightweight browser, now it's a memory hog like whoah. Luckily it's very customizable and has lots of neat extensions which make it worth it, but really at this point if you want a lightweight browser IE is a better option (Don't have a functional Windows 10 install so can't say much about Edge)

Interesting. I was actually thinking about getting a Surface tablet for a project - programming a robot to play simple Java and Flash games (and possibly running code off the tablet itself in the future, which would require a desktop OS).

Would the Surface 3 with its Intel Atom CPU be adequate for that? I suppose the 4GB of RAM might be a greater concern than the CPU.

Anyone got advice on tablets in Canada? I'd go for a Shield K1, but they seem to be unobtanium here. $250 CAD is around the most I can afford, and it would be used primarily for text documents, PDFs, some general browsing/Netflix, and making maps for tabletop games.

Anyone have any suggestions that would fit that? If not, are RCA tablets like this one http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/rca-10-32gb-tablet-with-keyboard-folio-case/6000195091027 worthwhile?

Can you not buy off Swappa in Canada? Just got a Shield myself via Swappa for $175 USD, pretty painless.

The surface 3 series should be workable for what you want to do, just be aware that there is two versions, the Surface 3 AND a Surface Pro 3.
The Pro 3 is slightly bigger, has a higher resolution screen, and includes the pen device, and costs about $200 more.
4GB of RAM is ok as well, 2GB is the minimum RAM spec needed to run Windows 8.x/10.

I have a Surface 3 with 2 GB of RAM and honestly it's fine, it's actually faster and more responsive than my previous laptop (a dual-core celeron with 4 GB of RAM). I'll write a trip report on it when I feel like it if people want that.

If anyone is on the fence about a Surface Pro 4, I just took delivery of an i5/16/512 (w/ the fingerprint Type Cover)for work this morning. This thing is awesome. Our shop has always been Lenovo Thinkpads and Macbook Pros and I can totally see these replacing many of them. Its built really well and even without the i7, I was just running some RDP sessions and four VMs (two Windows Server 2012 w/ SQL and IIS dev environments, one Windows 7 Pro, one Windows 10) across two external monitors and the SP4 screen itself and it didn't break a sweat. The pen and digitizer are among the best I have used (and our Lenovo X-series tablets all had Wacom digitizers) and the screen is gorgeous. It's a step up from the MBP Retinas we have. The Type Cover is a joy to use. Typing feels natural and the trackpad (which is glass?) is pretty much perfect. If you've got the cash and are in the market, this is a no-brainer.

My only complaints after about 5 hours of dicking around with it are that it does not come with the Pen Tip Kit and that at 2PM today I have to turn it over to my coworker :argh:

Hello thread. US Resident here looking for a tablet recommendation. I would like something with a 10" screen, with primary uses being schoolwork and some light gaming. Expandable storage is preferred, but not necessary. I do absolutely want Android, since that's where I have all my mobile games. I'm trying to keep it under $200, but am willing to go a little pricier. Kindly point me in the right direction.

There's not really anything worthwhile that's both 10" and $200. I think Google is still offering 25% off a Pixel C, but that's still $350. You'll either need to adjust your budget or your sacrifice screen size.

The school work is primarily note-taking in class. I've got a little beast of a tower to chew through anything that actually needs the power. I also want a tablet because putting a laptop on a music stand isn't exactly the most practical thing in the world.

Any android tablet can use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. There are a variety of cases and such.

I believe it doesn't support USB keyboards out of the box, but can be tweaked to.

I'm sure it'll be an on going debate, but there is evidence that shows that note taking on a device (tab or computer) leads to less retention of said lecture versus taking paper notes. The main point they have I believe was because you write a lot of shorthand with paper, the mind focuses more and therefore retains more, etc.

Edit: I think it's in this link here. Whole episode isn't about I t obviously, but they touch on the difference.
http://freakonomics.com/podcast/who-needs-handwriting/

Using tablets for sheet music is something I'm still not bought in on. Convenience wise, absolutely. But there's the obvious risk of falling, there's the tablet lagging at the wrong time, adding notations probably is still inconsistent, and most importantly even a 10" tab really doesn't replace the size of most sheet music (emphasize most since it varies a lot).

For educational use, the Surface 3 (not Pro) gets good reviews and has excellent handwriting function for note taking. Don't think you can hit the $200 price point without going secondhand though, even with a student discount.

The Surface 2 runs Windows RT, which is a watered down version of Windows 8 running on ARM. I guarantee AMIDuOS won't run on it.

currently reading through the OP and doing some of my own research but basically here is how my quest goes:

I have a relative who has quite strong schizophrenia but is currently, thankfully, well treated and pretty happy in their circumstances . However, there has been a problem as they live in Florida and were recently moved to a new public housing residence that currently has no internet with no practical timeline for getting internet access again.

Up to this point they were very happy and managed to not lose/have stolen a basic 10 Inch Lenovo tablet and use it with internet connectivity (we have had bad experiences with cellphones and bicycles, for example getting 'traded' or stolen). I have confirmed that this table they have currently has no ability to take a sim card. What we want to do is get the most basic/durable tablet with cellular data connectivity that we could provide and able to keep the data plan credited and with the ability to monitor the account from a distance in the event a housemate might abuse the data or it is stolen or otherwise. Unfortunately this is a recurring issue for mentally ill people in public housing from years of experience.

An unfortunate analogy, but basically I am searching for a tablet around 10" that would work great with a cellular data plan that we could exercise 'parental supervision' on relatively easily

Any ideas?

Might be worth having a look at the Cube i7 stylus.

pro:
Cheap as balls.
Active stylus with 1024 pressure.
Windows 10, or 8.1 with 10 upgrade.
Can install RemixOS - an Android OS - on SD card to dual boot it (drivers all sorted now, since there was a remix i7).
Comes with fast SSD, can change it for 256+ if you're good with your hands.
Official seller is one of the good ones in terms of Chinese tablet sellers.

Con:
Processor is a bit weak compared to latest Skylake m3's. It ain't going to run many Windows games, although it can manage a few oldies on low.
Chinese tablet lottery. Example, my Cube i9 arrived with a fault. If I wasn't going to open it myself to mod it and upgrade it anyway I might've had to send it back.
RemixOS is in beta, expect compatibility issues. Fiddly to get drivers working, requires google-fu.
Keyboard extra, but recommended.
Wireless limited to 2.4 to save cash, no ac.

Have a look at a review or two. I love my i9 but it hasn't been a painless delivery.

I know there's a variant model of the Surface 3 that would hit your requirements about perfectly (10.8" screen, sim card slot for 4G LTE), but is there any particular reason why you can't just get a LTE dongle to plug into your current Thinkpad?

Meh. Newegg lists a refurbished 128GB Surface 3 at ~$400, and everywhere I can find the i7 stylus listed are sketchy foreign/unfamiliar sites for everything ranging from only a little cheaper to exorbitantly expensive. (There's one asking $850 for it) No offense, but I'm somewhat paranoid about niche Chinese electronics.

E: Looking at your prices over there, yeah, it really doesn't make sense for you. Over here in Euro land, it's literally a fraction of the price of brand units!
