Which is admittedly better then the status quo but still a bit hard to get all about. ... I mean don't get me wrong, I will still most likely be drunken cheering come election night if Turnbulls booted, but your allowed to get a bit over excited about the less crappy candidate winning on election nights, there are just their own thing...

If Turnbull takes a win, how long does Shorten survive as opposition leader? Alternatively, if Turnbull loses outright (not likely imo, I would think a hung parliament is more on the cards if it's anything other than an outright win), would that be enough for the Liberal Right to start getting antsy about his usefulness? I feel like there's a bit of a toxic political climate at the moment - in the last six years we've had 4 different people in 5 stints as PM, and 3 of the last 4 changes of PM have come about as a result of party shenanigans. Leadership changes quickly turn into declining polls, which turn into another leadership change. In the parties and (imo) for the voters, there's a crisis of confidence in the top job. I couldn't see Shorten hanging on after a loss, there would be at least a challenge. If Turnbull loses this election that would be twice he's going to an election and lost. Challenge to come from the left or right. Problem with the challenge coming from the right, who the gently caress do they still have of note to Challenge Kevin Andrews. LOL. Edit: Could easily see Turnbull just stepping down. He's not young and a three year wait won't make him any younger. Also I'm sure he's noted Abbotts popularity dive amongst conservative for sticking around, so I could actually see Turnbull just straight up retiring if he lost. Best thing he could do for his 'legacy'. dr_rat fucked around with this message at 13:22 on Apr 18, 2016 |

read David Marr's quarterly essay on Bill Shorten, he wont step down when he loses, he will make the party sack him, he has wanted to be PM since forever which makes it all the more delicious that he won't ever get the job.

I still remember Marr's QE on Abbott before he was elected, when he says he asked Abbott off the record why he wanted to be PM, and wrote "I deeply wish I could tell you what he said." Maddeningly tantalising.

I honestly believe that the media in this country is extremely harmful to political discourse, framing every discussion in terms that are favourable to the LNP. I see the ALP as having to play against a stacked deck each and every election.

People believe the LNP are better at economic management despite plenty of evidence to the contrary. It mostly stems from Howard riding the mining boom and Labor inheriting that mess at the same time the GFC came along.

The household budget analogy is easy for people to understand - the best way to fight it is to convert the debt to the homeloan and the GDP to the household budget. No-one panics if they have a homeloan they could pay off with a few months of bills. Then mention how we're way better off than most other countries anyway. I'm still preferencing the libs because I don't want the Greens to have a skerrick of power.
