Fetish is highly individualized. I know some people love leather, dressing up as animals to make love, and I even knew of one colleague who snuck into people’s offices to watch porn on their computers. Really, that was his fetish. There are healthy fetishes and then nonhealthy ones. My route to fembotism wasn’t healthy, per se, but my enjoyment of the fetish is. How do you know what’s healthy or not? Pretty simple: does your fetish hurt anyone else? Does it violate someone? Or is it knowing and consensual? Even if your robot fetish extends to complete destruction of the fembot (something I’ve actually fantasized about myself), that doesn’t mean you hate women per se. Whether we want to admit it or not, something about death (real or mechanical) turns us all on a little bit. Why else would they call orgasms little deaths? It feels so good you wonder if you’re going to die, and afterward, your mind is rather empty. Fembot destruction is just a hyper-realization of that truth, not unlike the female mantis who cuts off her partner’s head halfway through sex. Maybe I’m just hosed up, but something about that turns me on that I can only gesture toward: sex might be a fundamentally pleasurable but also violent act.

What I don’t approve of is the use of the technosexual fetish to oppress women. If a guy tells me he likes robots just because that means they’re flawless, obedient, and don’t talk much, well guess what? You’re not a technosexual! You’re just a jerk. We could see a great case in point in comparing Cherry 2000 to a movie like Ex Machina. Aside from that nice scene or two at the beginning, this film is almost not about her at all. It’s frustrating. I want to know more about Cherry, but she’s really just a plot device. In Ex Machina, however, Ava is the plot. She is a fembotists’ dream–smart, cunning, but also showing plenty of metal. I could live as Ava all day long, as long as could have hair!
