Glowforge pushed to December 2016. Apparently now moving assembly to the US, QnA tomorrow. I guess the Chinese beta units they were getting were worse than imagined

I still am moderately confident in the glowforge being decent, if only because they give you every opportunity to get a refund on the preorder every time they post an update. The forum is still insufferable though

A Yolo Wizard posted:I still am moderately confident in the glowforge being decent, if only because they give you every opportunity to get a refund on the preorder every time they post an update. The forum is still insufferable though The thing is, the guy did everything right. He had a working version before he launched, he validated demand, he sorted out his BOM, he knew how to build the thing in mass production, he made the right calls to the right suppliers and confirmed his supply chain was solid, got contracts ready to go, had his marketing materials and packaging plans all ready, all before he sold even one. Nobody is that prepared for their kickstarter, he did amazing. Then he sold a poo poo-ton of them, and discovered that even when you've done everything right, hardware manufacturing is aggravatingly difficult for stupid, stupid reasons. Especially in China, your suppliers will straight-up lie to you about when things will be ready. Your project will get held up unless you pay the right bribes, but nobody ever tells you what the right bribes are, so you have to pay someone to know who you have to bribe and how much. Otherwise you'll never get anywhere in the guanxi system and no one will tell you why. Moving everything to the US is a great sign; it means his margins were high enough that he can afford it, and it almost eliminates the risk of more of that specific sort of delay. But it's not like that solves everything. Hardware manufacturers will happily sign a contract to deliver X thousand units of Y hardware by date Z, knowing full well that they haven't invented Y yet and they can't spin up X units until Z plus 30 days. And they'll happily pay the penalties you wrote into the contract, assuming you remembered and your lawyer did a good job, because you've paid their R&D costs for the hardware you thought you were buying off the shelf. It's kickstarters all the way down. And once date Z rolls around, and your hardware suppliers say it'll be another month, you still have to go with them because the lead time for any *other* supplier will be way more than the 30 days they're asking for. And the assholes who made the decision to scam you know that as well as you do. Even if you do everything right on the development end, and even if you pay the right bribes / move your operation to the US, and even if you have all the most expensive lawyers sorting out your complicated contracts for your entire supply chain so that no one can gently caress you over without paying huge penalties, you will *still* gently caress it up. I don't know how, exactly, but it'll happen. The ultrasonic welder at the factory breaks and they need a new one and delivery will take 3 weeks. The CMF comes back out of spec because they didn't use the pantone colors you asked for and now they have to re-mix the resin and it'll take 2 weeks. The hard tooling hit the floor and dented and it'll take 6 weeks to mill a new set because the people who do that are all off for Chinese new year. The injection molding process can't handle the sharp edge on the left side of the case and you'll have to rework the wiring to make it fit inside the revised design. Someone else paid better bribes than you and got bumped ahead of you in line. Maybe all those things. There is just no way for an amateur or a novice to do a hardware project at scale. Even people with a dozen years experience get flummoxed by the complexity of manufacturing even relatively simple devices. Basically just never back a hardware kickstarter, because even people with their poo poo together, advised by experts, with tens of millions in funding and a subsidiary office in China still can't build poo poo right. e: im real mad about making poo poo
