Fooma posted:I still can't wrap it around my head they just made a half-million dollars selling a jpeg, not even a good one, and not to new people but to people who already have piles of jpegs. This is a whaling problem and this is feeding on people's weaknesses. I thought mobile freemium games were bad for whales but at least they can still play a gem-matching game or something while they take poo poo. Imagine if he had the star trek or star wars license. Few kids today remember wing commander at all. this is all the middle-aged spergs riding on nostalgia of old pixel games where dogfights always ended up hard-turning 180' loops at 0 speed to occasionally attack a ship. Something to remember: These people are immersed in the fiction that they're helping make their own dreams come true, vicariously, through Chris Roberts: Surrogate Visionary of the Damned. They're dreamers who don't believe in themselves. For whatever reason they feel terribly at odds with everything around them. They're Bens, alone, outside the window of the world looking in. And along floats Chris Roberts, out there with 'em, floating amongst the stars saying "Come along friends! We don't need their stinking world. I'm gonna make a better one! Now if I could only find some money..." "They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it; for it is money they have, and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in shirt-sleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces.."

CIG can't put out anything but the same platitudes and bullshit, Derek sounds like a broken record most of the time, and the idiotic manchildren who still support this abortion are so loving stupid that they deserve to be fleeced. Sooner or later, the fireworks will go off, and you know that at least — just don't rely on Derek for the countdown.

Mirificus posted:Re-posting this article since someone was asking about it. It's a decent article and interesting topic but we already know that from the technology world. Early adopters and Enthusiasts almost always make an idea/product appear to be the next big thing. They are of cause also the loudest with the means and knowledge to create artificial hype. The latest VR hype is a good example. It has zero mass market appeal even if the technology catches up to current display and comfort standards in the next 10 years. It will end up as a niche and eventually fail due to dwindling support. I am not saying VR is bad, play E:D with it and everyone can see it is amazing, yet it is still not a mass market product because it is a niche device for niche games.

Yes that obscure well known niche product the PlayStation sure won't help sell it to the mass market at all

VR is definitely the future. FPS, Puzzle, Sim, and other genres could all make use of it. Saying that VR will fail or that its a niche is the same criticism that was levelled at motion controls.

Right now, I feel that VR is somewhere around the Blackberry slabphone era: it has found a specific utility niche and market that suddenly realise that they can't live without the tech, but the man in the street is still probably better served by a standard bar/flip phone. To make it really big, we need to get to the iOS/Android stage, where suddenly it becomes the baseline and you need a bit of a reason not to have it.

If it takes off, that part will come naturally as the market expands to allow sales volume to make up for slightly lower margins and as the tech becomes less experimental for each rapidly iterated generation.
