The army has an unbelievably toxic culture so it's not surprising that people who survive (or worse thrive in) it tend to have some pretty heinous attitudes. It's taken me a long time to help my housemate understand the difference between what was drilled into them in the army and the way the real world works. I remember they used to have a go at me when I didn't go to work because I had a cold because I was being "weak" and a "malingerer" and I was like, "What the poo poo, work would send me home when I'm like this because they don't want me sicking up the place and getting everyone else unwell!".

It's like all the bullying and exclusion and abuse and power games of children translated into the adult world, they grab these kids at 17 and make sure they never ever grow up. At least that's my limited experience of people who have served (as infantry) and gotten out.

Ive seen this too, at the same time, the Army puts a rifle in a young adults hands and expects them to act like adults.
It becoming routine to see and hear 50 year olds treat 30 year olds as children.

I sure can't see any good reason to critique the culture of violence and intimidation in our armed forces on a day when servicemen get together, drink heavily and have to constantly be talked out of fighting civvies and each other by their COs

Yes, literally "malingerer".

One of the more :eyepop: stories I was told was about my housemate being knocked unconscious after being hit with a truck door in the temple and then after they woke up getting up and keeping working because getting medical attention for poo poo like that was considered "slacking".

Everything I've heard about the infantry makes it sound like this insane nightmare where everyone involved has no idea how loving awful and damaging it is because they've never known anything outside of it.

It's a pretty obnoxious minority and it never happens at actual services and parades but in the pub industry you roster more guards on for ANZAC day than literally any other day in the year because the sheer volume of violent incidents skyrockets

bigis, your reaction of "servicemen are above reproach and can't be slagged off" goes hand in hand with my earlier comments of how servicemen think they're immune to criticism based solely on the fact that they have served. As soon as someone says anything slightly critical about the ADF they're branded as "traitor", "communist" or whatever. No-one in this thread has slagged off the ANZACs, and I'm sure most people are thankful in their own way.

Being thankful for past sacrifice(s) does not have to extend into tolerating bad/childish behaviour by our most recent generation of veterans. I don't know how many vets/servicemen/servicewomen you know or have on FB or instagram or whatever. But at this time of year, increasingly so for the last several years, it turns into an absolute poo poo-show of "who can post the warriest selfie" or "who can look pensively on in thought while wearing full dress uniform" all while being photographed with the sole intention of farming likes on FB or whatever. It's hosed, and that's not what the day is about.

Me? I've lamented that it's no longer a day of remembrance. Which then spurred a conversation about how the ADF has a lovely, abusive culture.

I'm sorry about the "suck my dick" comment. That was uncalled for.

'Brandzac Day': Historian criticises 'new low in the commercialisation of Anzac'
7.30 By Conor Duffy
Updated 16 Apr 2015, 5:23am

Critics of Woolworths' failed "Fresh in our Memories" campaign say Anzac Day is in danger of becoming just another marketing tool like Christmas and Easter for retailers — and some commentators are calling it "Brandzac Day".

Historian Dr Carolyn Holbrook is horrified by the hijacking of the Anzac Day brand.

"I found the Woolworths campaign to be vulgar, but to be honest I didn't find it more distasteful and vulgar than a lot of other things which are going on in terms of the commercialisation of Anzac and the use of the Anzac brand," she told the ABC's 7.30 program.

Some retail centres are now stocking for Anzac Day in the same way they do for Easter or Christmas.

"Anzac is the most potent and popular brand going around in Australia today, I would argue," Dr Holbrook said.

"So companies are just falling over themselves to find ways to associate themselves with it."

Sorry, this video has expired
VIDEO: 'A new low in ANZAC commercialisation' as historians and veterans criticise marketing (7.30)
Among the merchandising on display at a shopping centre yesterday were mugs, stubby holders, even a rosemary-scented Anzac candle.

But Dr Holbrook thinks one T-shirt is the worst example of exploitation of the Anzac name that she has seen.

"With an image of an Anzac poster-girl kneeling in khaki latex with really huge breasts, brandishing a gun with a hard hat on her head and behind her [is] an image of the rising sun badge," she said.

"I just thought that was basically Anzac porn, a new low in the commercialisation of Anzac."

Through the actions of Dr Holbrook and others, that T-shirt has now been withdrawn from sale.

Woolworths avoids fine despite no ministerial permission

Since 1920, companies have needed ministerial permission to market one of Australia's most sacred symbols.

Woolworths did not have it but will escape a fine because they scrapped the campaign.

Woolworths: Fresh in Our Memories Anzac campaign
PHOTO: Woolworths launched a picture generator as part of the Fresh in our Memories campaign. (Woolworths)
Now Minister for Veterans' Affairs Michael Ronaldson is warning other companies could earn $50,000 fines for future breaches.

"There are 102,000 names in the cloisters of the Australian War Memorial of men and women who've made the ultimate sacrifice for this nation," Senator Ronaldson said.

"By protecting the word Anzac we protect their past and we protect their memories."

"This is a pivotal moment in our nation's history and no-one including myself wants to see and indication of the word Anzac being trivialised," he added.

Companies using Anzac defend their promotions on the grounds that some of the money goes to charity.

David Stephens runs a blog called Honest History which scrutinises the use of the word Anzac.

He believes the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) needs to ensure more of the profits from Anzac sales go to veterans groups.

"I think DVA should do a lot more to insist that they have an idea of where the money's going and who's benefiting from it, not simply having a quick look at a form and basically letting all of them through, stopping every view," Dr Stephens said.

"It's a primitive system to stop what can be a real commercial money maker."

VB's 'Raise A Glass' campaign in poor taste

It is not only the money being made, but the types of products that are raising concerns.

This is the sixth year that Victoria Bitter (VB) has run its "Raise A Glass" campaign.

It's ... an alcohol brand playing on our emotions about the tragedy of these men losing their lives in order to make profits and I find that distasteful.
Dr Carolyn Holbrook
"It's a brand, an alcohol brand playing on our emotions about the tragedy of these men losing their lives in order to make profits and I find that distasteful," Dr Holbrook said.

The beer giant gives $1 million to the Returned Services League and Legacy each year, but critics say it encourages drinking among veterans.

"I think the Raise A Glass [campaign] is one of the worst because it doesn't take account of the alcohol culture in the Department of Defence," Dr Stephens said.

"In 2011, Margaret Hamilton did a report for the ADF and it pointed to the risk of the alcohol culture in the Defence Force was getting worse and it was being encouraged, the implication was by advertising which linked alcohol to icons like Anzac."

VB's owner, Carlton and United, counters the critics by pointing out the campaign is one of the biggest contributors to veterans' welfare.

With Anzac Day just a week-and-a-half away, companies have been warned the Government and others like David Stephens and Carolyn Holbrook are watching.
