I have known dogs that sometimes get a little freaked out if you hug them the wrong way just from the "lumbering large body trying to envelope and pin me down" aspect. That being said, psychology today is woo woo pseudoscience bullshit not an actual academic journal. Also if a dog doesn't like it they will give a little growl saying "OK buddy I want some space." Otherwise, hug and pette all dogs jeeze this isn't rocket science.

The state of psychology, psychiatry, and sociology in general is woo woo pseudoscience bullshit but I don't want to get into it. All I'll say is that if the result of a "social science" study is completely counterintuitive, you should ignore it because the methodology is guaranteed crap. If it's so intuitive like "I knew this all along!" then you should still ignore it because you're being pandered to and the methodology is still crap. Psych studies exist to manufacture headlines for ideologically sympathetic periodicals.

Makes perfect sense if you try to a hug a dog that doesn't know you but if you come home and your dog is making GBS threads itself excited and trying press itself into you as much as it can then the idea it would somehow suddenly get freaked out when you hugged it is just dumb.

If your dog is pressing on you hard at the door you haven't trained your dog well. They should always give you space to come in and get situated first. You should be ignoring the dog the moment you walk in the door until you're ready to give them back all the attention they deserve. Letting them maul you at the door actually leads to increased anxiety and separation issues. When your departure and return become routine non-exciting events, they're much more chill when you're gone. When I get home I don't say a word to my roommate's dogs or Dakota. I just let them out of kennels if they're in them or if not just walk to the back door. They calmly follow and sit, we go do our business, then once we get back inside we go apeshit for a few minutes.

Didn't mean to spark any sort of debate or discussion on the matter. Just thought it was ridiculous slow news day type thing That said I disagree with the above. That's definitely applicable to crate training and what you should be doing, especially initially. And while you can argue your home is one big crate. Yeah whatever I'm not going to argue I just disagree with that outside of crate training.
