Denzel Washington didn't want to kiss Julia Roberts in The Pelican Brief. He later said it was specifically in order to cater to oldpainless' taste. The right choice imo.

If you took oldpainless at face value you might actually have serious learning difficulties. In the first season of Vikings the King of Northumbria has a snake pit and he mentions introducing the raiding vikings to the snakes but he only ever throws his own man into the snake pit. There's even a scene where he gives the vikings a fake chest of gold but it just turns out to be empty, he could have put loads of pissed off snakes in there.

Oh that's cool! My mistake then. I heard the show is loosely based around viking legends about a guy called Ragnar. Considering it's on the third season or so I have avoided googling anything till I catch up.

Apparently all of Ragnar's sons had fairly well documented lives, but the man himself is fairly apocryphal, so the show can take a lot of liberties.

I stopped watching Sleepy Hollow about the time they revealed another horseman of the apocalypse was the main guy's son? But he turned evil because he had some haunted teddy bear monster and his parents were both gone? Sounds like the show went the way of Once Upon a Time. Hey, did you know Peter Pan is Rumplestilkin's dad? And Robin Hood is totally married to the Wicked Witch of the West, who is the half sister of Snow White's Evil Stepmother? And the Frozen princesses have an aunt with ice powers that freezes the entire place and then later turns everyone evil? And for some reason loving Victor Frankenstein is there too. And Maleficent was a mother whose baby was stolen and then the baby turned evil and came back? At some point the writers need to stop stealing material from Fanfiction.net.

Wikipedia posted:According to the documentary The Slanted Screen, Han and Trish were supposed to have a kissing scene, which explains the title of Romeo, but this was met with derision from a pre-screening with an urban audience.[3] Jet Li stated on his personal website that they had filmed both versions of the scene (with kiss and without), and decided to use the one without instead because it would be "somewhat strange and awkward" for Han to have witnessed his father's suicide and then to come out and kiss someone.[4] Upon thinking on it, I realize the last movies I saw where an Asian male lead gets the girl are the Harold & Kumar movies.

Yeah according to Hollywood the aversion is so intense that there's no way you can sell the movie/series unless it follows muscles like this?'s observation. At least there are now some addenda: An Asian man can be cool and capable, but not masculine & sexy. So when Steven Yeun (Glenn) first showed up in Walking Dead his character is this weird Tokyo Drift goofball character, but now he's a badass dude who has an actual relationship with a white woman. There were literal articles about the "implications" about their first kiss. Also I thought I remembered Denzel kissing Kelly Oreilly in Flight but I guess not.

I wonder how the new Star Wars trilogy is going to play into all this. In TFA, they were clearly setting Rey and Finn up for a romance, but fan feedback apparently was overwhelmingly in favor of a Finn and Poe relationship instead. How transgressive is a homosexual black/latino relationship compared to a hetro black/white?

How transgressive is a homosexual black/latino relationship compared to a hetro black/white? Probably homosexuality overrides any race of the parties. Black/white hetero depends on who's the man/woman. Black man on white woman is the worst "obviously". White man on black woman is fine, "obviously". Gay supporting characters need to not be too attractive and/or masculine. Goofy/sissy gays are fine. Basically imagine the default white heterosexual christian conservative man. Would he be uncomfortable by watching that couple? If you're not sure, he probably would be. Better to err on the side of caution. R-rated. The only way a non-white/non-straight man gets a kiss in a Hollywood scene is by being non-threatening to white dudes. Black guys can't be too athletic, asian dudes have to be nerdy as hell. Like it's a mix of playing against/towards stereotypes. Playing away from the bland white "everyman" stereotype.

It's not that it doesn't happen, just high profile examples are disturbingly rare. I feel like Netflix and amazon and their subscription model make it easier to take risks because people are paying for it even if they don't watch it.

The Fast and Furious movies can be surprisingly diverse and stereotype-breaking, especially the more recent ones. The main actor is mixed-race (even if his character is implied to be just Italian) and he has a romance with a Latina girl. The techie/hacker guy isn't Asian, or nerdy or awkward, but black and totally chill personality-wise - and he can also hold his own as a badass in non-techie scenarios. The other black guy on the team is buff, but instead of being an rear end-kickin' tough guy, he's kind of a scaredy cat who is just obsessed with his appearance and fashion. The Asian guy isn't a genius, or a martial arts expert, but is the cool dude / smooth-talker on the team, and has a romance with a white woman. The series is certainly not progressive in ALL ways, but I'm impressed with the little tweaks to the standard Hollywood character formulas.Lotish posted:And then Netflix and Marvel put out Jessica Jones and the first third of the series features a lot of black man / white woman loving. I was just watching some movie called "Echelon Conspiracy", and aside from the fact that it was just a ripoff of every other prior "government computer develops a mind of its own" movie, it had a blatant use of one of the most irritating things in movies like that. If someone has an earpiece in, no matter whether it's supposed to be covert (as it was in this case) or otherwise, they always touch it with their finger when they're receiving a message. You know you're being watched by cameras everywhere you idiot, stop touching it. He had just gotten in trouble with casino security for having a cellphone out, and he thinks sticking his finger in his ear every couple minutes is going to be less suspicious?

Biplane posted:If you watched The Force Awakens and walked out thinking Finn and Rey are gonna hook up you should turn in your movie analysis card pronto. There have been movie romances that made a lot less sense than Finn and Rey. There's no way they are going to give in to "fan demand" and do the Finn/Poe thing. The ones who want it are going to watch anything with the Star Wars label on it anyway, but there are people who will not watch it that would have watched it otherwise if they "dare" to insert a prominent homosexual relationship. Movies (or at least, this type of movie) are about making as much money as possible, they'll never do it.
