The author's choice to basically focus all attention on a gag character is baffling. I don't understand how it went from a pretty cool series to a total shitshow as well

maybe Genshiken vanilla was a fluke

a couple new immortal hounds. I'm still sticking with it to see where it goes even if it's not been great as of late.

I was really wondering what would happen with this latest chapter, if anything at all would happen, and then the dude just casually mentions that they only live until 60. I wonder what that means in the grand scheme of things?

Before this arc a lot of things got resolutions though. People grew up and got jobs, couples got together etc.

Hooray child soldiers! I love this art style and that its being applied to anime WW2 in a much grittier way than valkyria chronicles

The only reason to keep following it is to see when the drat thing will be finished and the author moves on to something else better hopefully.

I like seeing how different groups organize, even if one of the ones being shown is pretty much an exacerbated version of another shown earlier in the series.

it's also fun to see how the other mangaka managed to survive and become a badass (though he's still a creep)

Boy Shamo sure went from good to garbage pretty quick after the artist writer split. It was almost comical how bad and lame the final arc and ending were. What a great final battle, beating up on a literally mentally disabled dude. Then that lame rear end ending. "YOU THINK THERE WAS AN OLD MAN AND A PEARLY GATE??? Heh...bullshit". That final chapter is some poo poo I'd have written at 13. loving ants, man.
It straight up ruined the whole of the series cuz how do you even recommend Shamo with a drop off like that.

But then I tried reading the series the Shamo writer went to after and it was even bigger garbage so I don't know

Isn't that the thing where like the first big chunk of stories are resolved with strong-arming women in debt into prostitution.

Because boy could I not drop that any quicker after a while, it just felt like I was reading some weird fetish poo poo without being in the know.

I've read quite a bit of Ushijima and the only woman who was not sexually degraded was the receptionist.
By the time I quit reading that manga I felt like the author's social critique was all just basement dweller nihilism. Just saying humans are all trash is just being very infantile and reductive of the human experience

I guess sometimes all we need is some gokus

What "over the top" are you talking about? Ushijima is a loving angel compared to any real loanshark boss. He only tortures and kills people when there is something *more* than money involved. (He's obviously loving criminal scum but that's the point)

Sharkopath
May 27, 2009

Loansharks dont do any of that stuff in the modern day. It's mostly about just hounding you for the payments now because of the criminalization of the extralegal elements of the old style of asset extraction. Japanese moneylending is the same way because of similar controversy that happened at about the same time.

The storyline about the OL who is forced into prostitution, drug addiction and turns into a meth zombie in what seems to be a couple of months at most is absurd to the point of hilarity.

And loan sharks have enough ways to gently caress you over before resorting to physical violence

Unless it's the 60s or a Guy Ritchie movie

Are you from the past?

Theres a line they have to dance around crossing because if they go too far the cops will prosecute and it doesn't matter how much is owed.

And if you're running an illegal ring under the table they will straight up bust you with the swat team.

I had a brief period where I was using payday loan places (for an equally depressing reason I won't get into), and it seems like the worst they'll do (in the US, at least) is hound you relentlessly over phone and call your employer (this is the worst part; I was lucky enough that the call went to my office phone instead of someone else's). The only consolation is that they won't tell the reason for the call to anyone else, even if it might be relatively easily inferred.

One thing I was surprised about is that you have to give 2 or 3 references (who they will call) and prove that you have some kind of job/cash flow, even for loans of only ~200-300 dollars. It seems like it would be difficult for someone who is really poor/unemployed to actually get one of these loans, which seems counter-intuitive. I guess that you can use proof of unemployment/welfare payments as well?

Loansharks do not tend to operate in large enough operations to justify straight up crimin like breaking people's legs. It is not like they're a defacto crime organization, they're just seedy rear end people
There are a few """legitimate""" businesses where I live that tend to sell their clients' debts* for cash from loansharks, it is an easy way to always have actual money that is totally not going to snowball and swallow them whole in the future.

It does kind of suck that we waited 2 (?) years for these plot set up chapters. Especially after such an awesome cliffhanger. I wonder if these chapters are set before the events from the previous 2 volumes?

Punkin Spunkin

I guess it'd be like, tolerable and cool setting up if you were like, reading a completed I Am a Hero though. You wouldn't mind as much, just going chapter by chapter with some new cool aspect/group in the apocalypse, and assuming any of these threads come together the payoff would be more immediate and satisfying.
can't do that though.

I think this is why the previous translation group would translate entire volumes at a time, the pacing in I Am A Hero is all hosed up and weird otherwise. It's definitely meant to be read volume-to-volume.

If there's one thing I do appreciate it's just that I don't have much time to read manga and I'm juggling a billion series anyway so at least I know when there's a new chapter of I Am a Hero I'll be able to breeze through it in like a minute
Only problem is I won't actually remember the current plot by the time the volume ends

Yeah, in Japan that may be the case, but that doesn't make for a very good basis for your manga. In plenty other places loansharks are scary as gently caress, specially if loan-sharking is just a side business for a criminal enterprise.

Edit: And yeah, the first few stories in Ushijima do suck. They get better as it becomes more about interconnected characters doing stupid poo poo and how the loansharks throw a wrench into whatever is happening to get their money. Still not great but different enough.

That's reassuring, I kind of dropped it immediately in the first chapter because I was already tired of the loanshark guy's dumb ugly face and the ugliness that existed in like, every facet of the story, from the art, to the forced prostitution, to the basement dweller nihilism pervading it throughout.
