to be fair I think the guy who was complaining about C was actually complaining about preprocessor conditionals where the define is not in this file, which are of course a very common thing

and yeah, those are kind of balls to deal with, and their ubiquity is not a good feature of C

I'm just glad nobody's defending the practice that rule was actually about :unsmith:

But that's because Windows is bad, and has nothing to do with C, right??

I literally had no idea, so I went and looked it up

http://stackoverflow.com/a/4914108 posted:

Using NOMINMAX is the only not-completely-evil way to include <windows.h>. You should also define UNICODE and STRICT. Although the latter is defined by default by modern implementations.

You can however run into problems with Microsoft’s headers, e.g. for GdiPlus. I’m not aware of problems with headers from any other companies or persons.

What the gently caress is going on in Windows I want nothing to do with this ever

it's pointless to undefine NOMINMAX, windows.h is "namespace pollution, the header". in fact NOMINMAX prevents it from defining min and max as macros that break standard C++ code (where min/max are "standard" function names that are almost language extensions)

Why? It's just YOSPOS having some drunken weekend anal leakage. You've got OSI Bean Dip, the Internet Antivirus Expert who once interned at Symantec or something, who just keeps asking someone to explain antivirus to him and who thinks the NSA is going after grandma's cat pictures (the explanation he gave in the thread he linked for why antivirus sucked, after I got past all the "under construction" paragraphs), and a bunch of white noise posters.

It would almost be funny if they weren't giving such bad advice. Sure, anyone who posts in this forum can probably avoid clicking any obvious malware links or opening a suspicious attachment. But that's not good advice for a business or for your aunt who loves those FWD: FWD: FWD: emails.
