jabby posted:The problem with insisting there's no problem is that quite a few Labour MPs are gleefully admitting there's a huge problem. It's very hard to try and paint this as a political smear when the calls for action are coming from within the party, even though most of us know they are being made for political ends too. The leadership has to be seen to take some action, but at the same time trying to avoid the narrative forming that Labour are an anti-semitic party. That's what I meant by this being a careful balancing act. The recent Jewish Socialists press release is a masterful example of reconciling this, Diane Abott's interview was not. Oh yeah, I'm not saying it's done well - the problem is people who think they can talk reasonably and sort this whole thing out, and completely fail to read the situation. But I mean you need both sides - if there's an inquiry, you need something that's at odds with that, basically arguing that it's not even necessary. You have to contest the whole premise if you're going to set out to prove there's no issue and to fix any problems that might turn up The tone might have been bad, but there'll always be an element of 'you're not taking this seriously enough' when you're basically rejecting the accusations. But yeah, the usual crew definitely ain't cutting it lately

I would watch a talent show where members of the public compete to be the country's best medieval shipwright and then the winner gets to conn their ship to Normandy. Like that Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard Wars crossover where they all made WWI era aircraft. That was cool.

I've never really understood the point of the Daily Express. Is it for people too racist for The Sun but too poor for The Mail? I don't think I've ever seen anyone reading a copy in the wild, so it's hard to judge.

(Or was it the Ecologist? I can't hear well, but it sounded like Apologist which would work totally fine for him) NO gently caress YOU DAD posted:I've never really understood the point of the Daily Express. Daily mail - Middleclass right Express - Middleclass right who dun read so well Guardian - Middleclass left, sort of. Doesn't seem to live in same reality as sold. Possible dimensional cross/breach/merge. Mirror - working class left. Low readership levels. Mysterious. No one has actually seen a working class leftist since the miners strike. Endangered or possibly extinct.

The Mail is for older readers who are very alarmed about black people and what they're doing to Are Country. The Express is for older readers who are very alarmed about mole people and what they're doing to Are Diana.

I'm convinced that a significant audience for The Sun is people who flick through the front, declare it 'all bollocks', mostly read the sport and fluff bits, and vote Labour. (source: pubs) I don't think the same is true for the Express or Mail.

(source: pubs) A lad I know reads the Daily Mail solely for its sports section. He doesn't give a poo poo about currents events besides said sports and what new movies/video games are coming out. Though if he did bother to read news he would probably go to the Mail for it too. He has described people as plebs without irony. He is also in his twenties without ever working a day in his life but always has money as he comes from a well off family, yet he still calls people on the dole parasites.
