She calls me sweet names in Idolm@ster 2 on my PS3 so she gets points. Also blonde. And busty. And probably the most motivated of the 765 bunch to actually do poo poo.

Yeah, but when she gets real she's always on top.

"Hey, learn this entire song and stage performance on the spot because the original performer is having issues."

Done. Miki is lazy, but she's loving boss as well. I think she sleeps because 765 Producer-san can't keep her busy.

:siren: WARNING: THIS IS A LOT OF WORDS ABOUT IDOLS. I'M REALLY SORRY, EVERYONE. :siren:

Idolmaster is literally just fantasy football with anime girls. Other anime idol groups are mostly like Touhou; you get a bunch of girls who do a thing, and then you merchandise the hell out of them.

The real idol industry is so vastly different and is honestly barely reflected by things like Idolmaster, most idol anime stuff, or even general Western perceptions of it. Most people associate idols with AKB48, the most popular group ever, and it's not a very accurate assessment. In short, Akimoto Yasushi, the producer of AKB48, is an entertainment mogul and master of marketing who is so big that he basically has enough pull with the Japanese government to be in charge of one of the Tokyo Olympic committees. (This actually caused a small uproar by people demanding that AKB48 not be in the opening ceremony, because a lot of people don't like them.) The thing about AKB48 is that they're not really traditional idols.

Idols are, more or less, amateur pop stars (I'll explain that a bit more in a bit). AKB48 is a full-scale pop group with tons of money behind them that are paraded to seem like idols. In fact, AkiP (that's his producer nickname) had a girl-group back in the 80s called "Onyanko Club", so this isn't his first rodeo. He knows all the tricks of the trade and basically runs the 48 conglomerate like a real businessman. And honestly, they're really the only idol group of that nature.

Most idol singers/groups are just amateurs, usually girls who just sing for fun. Some of them are really bad at it, but they have a passion that makes them interesting. Many modern-day Akiba idols are girls who work in maid cafes and get together to sing songs on their stage, usually karaoke covers. Sometimes, cafe owners will talk to local producers, either friends or "know-a-guy-who-knows-a-guy" types, to produce an original song or set of songs, some sort of single or EP. In some cases, the songs end up being popular with patrons who bring in friends, and a fanbase in born. Sometimes, it's alright, and the group doesn't really go anywhere. For those that do, idol singers will often use that mini-career as a stepping stone into the entertainment industry, either to continue singing or go into some other media career by using their idol experience for their portfolio. People love to joke about idols going into the porn industry (so much so that many believe it to be gospel), and while a few do (and some idol groups actually openly feature JAV stars as their members), the majority of idols either 1) go into modeling or drama acting, or 2) don't pursue an entertainment career at all. Until then, it's not uncommon to see small fanbases show up to see performances at cafes, and eventually, they get popular enough to perform mini-lives at small venues. More often than not, it's really as uninteresting and sterile as many parts of the entertainment industry are.

Now, don't get me wrong, there is some really screwed up in the idol world. At least a few are yakuza fronts, and some groups like Kamen Joshi have members who are paid so little that they're nearly homeless and starving. And no one really knows the whole story behind AKB48's Minegishi Minami's infamous "I dated a guy and shaved my head" apology video, because 1) she adamantly claims to this day she did it herself, and 2) AkiP said in an interview on camera that there is no love ban in AKB48. It's sketchy as hell and really stupid, and honestly, I think that's entirely part of AkiP's marketing. Most of the world hadn't even heard of AKB48 or were unfamiliar with idol groups in general until that video came out. The world took notice and had a lot to say, and it seems like it took the whole thing as a "Let's show the world what we really are" scenario, putting them in the spotlight and either gaining new fans or just fading to the back of people's minds. He doesn't really care what the world thinks, because he's making hand over fist, often at the expense of his singers, and I hate it. But luckily, that's not representative of the industry at large. It's most just a bunch of girls (and guys, too, there are guy idol groups), who are just enjoying themselves (and may or may not do anything with it) and a bunch of fans who want to support them.

That's my idol lesson for today. Hope that helped you understand things a bit better!

Mostly a good post but there's plenty of idols who aren't AKB48 or random amateurs either. Lots of them are in small to middling agencies/labels like the ones in Idolm@ster & make their money off concerts & modeling, with occasional TV performances. People like to talk about the business being shady and weird but actual idols, like 2D idols, are mostly cool and fun people

As far as idol portrayals go, Cinderella Girls, Wake Up Girls, and Locodol are some of the more realistic idol animes I've seen

edit: also obviously "school idols" are not a real thing like in Love Live but there's actually stuff like Unidol, which is a competition for university idol dance cover groups

slightly more on topic: a cool article about Chihaya & how Idolm@ster handles depression https://killscreen.com/articles/idolmster-and-the-mechanics-of-depression/

Yeah, it was pretty generalized, and I left a lot of stuff out. Maybe an A/T thread could be in the works?

I actually haven't watched CG, but WUG and Locodol are accurate enough. Not 100% but a decent look into that sort of thing.

Man, I could literally talk about idols all day but I'm not sure if anyone who doesn't already know about them cares enough for a thread?

Yeah there isn't anything super accurate out there but those are pretty good. CG has the problem of being full of really wacky characters but the scenarios tend to be more realistic than the main Idolm@ster anime. I also haven't read/watched myself, but according to some interviews Million Doll is supposed to be a more detailed look at underground idol & fan culture in Shibuya. For the comedy option, I'd recommend AKB0048 over Xenoglossia if you want sci-fi idols, it's very well done and does a good job capturing the grassroots support between idols and fans kind of thing
