And here I thought that the whole point of these bathroom gestapo laws was to make the REAL WOMEN feel comfortable using the ladies room, but here we have a bathroom full of women all telling the security guy to gently caress off, it's fine, that's a girl, and she still gets escorted out. HMMMMM I wonder if there might have been some ulterior motives to these laws??

What state was this? The article doesn't mention.

I'd probably be more worried about men from the American Family Association in a bathroom with my kid than about transgender people.

Few things come to mind.

1) It's basically a mirror of Jim Crow juries in Southern states, where it didn't matter what the defense was able to prove the person was guilty for being black.

2) Similar tactic to what sovcits have urged before.

3) Juries decide matters of fact, not matters of law.

4) The moment you start mentioning the words "jury nullification" the judge is going to slam their gavel down halfway through it and throw not only you but potentially everyone else in the room out of the jury selection process.

Primarily the irony I find is with #2. But I've been involved in enough court hearings that I'd see red if it happened to a client I was working with.

I don't see why this is a good problem. I thought it was an interesting article. IIRC juries in Washington state have done it at least once if not more on marijuana prosecutions by the feds.
Jury nullification is perfectly legal. As the article points out, the Supreme Court ruled it legal in a decision but also said the judge is under no obligation to tell the jury about it.
although a lot of what I know about it other than this article stems from an episode of How to Get Away with Murder, where a law student used a strategically placed brochure about jury nullification to engineer a mistrial.

Again, the irony I find in it is Vox advocating it to deal with what the juror might see as racist laws when it's been used in the past to uphold racist decisions as well as how sovcits are advocating for it.

If they're so worried about what happens to their young child in a public restroom, they should wait inside the restroom with them. Or, at the very least, wait outside. The scenarios they're painting sound like these people just send their 4 year old off to the restroom while they continue browsing DVDs at Target.

It's almost as if they're not arguing in good faith!

Oh hey, this popped up in my local Iowa newsfeed: someone's making a deck of women-themed playing cards.

quote:

Donald Trump says the only card Hillary Clinton has is the woman's card. Hillary Clinton says: "Deal me in!"

When my sister Zebby—who is currently finishing her Bachelor's of Fine Arts at the University of Iowa—heard the above exchange between Donald Trump and Secretary Clinton, she almost immediately started sketching "The Woman Card," a playing card-themed portrait of Hillary Clinton featured in the video above and shown below.

This sketch became The Woman Card[s]—a deck of playing cards celebrating American women at a time when we are only going to hear the phrase "The Woman Card" used by Donald Trump more and more often. The deck will feature 13 original, hand-drawn portraits of American women chosen by my sister and me to honor the incredible achievements the women of this country have made. Each woman will appear in all four suits, and yes, this will be a full 54-card deck. (52 cards + Jokers, and no, we don't know who the Jokers will be yet.) This isn't just a novelty, somewhat cheeky deck of cards that are poking fun at Donald Trump—it's a badass deck of cards that, frankly, is the only non-History Channel deck of cards about leading American women that we've been able to find.

The first-edition of the deck will feature thirteen incredible women, who were (or are!) pioneers in their fields, ranging from politics to music to science to humanitarian work. Four quick sketches are below, with many more to come over the next few weeks.

I thought the brother Zach seemed familiar, and that's because he was the guy who gave a short speech to the Iowa House of Representatives 5 years ago about his lesbian parents.
