Someone get rich mass producing big well lit commercial signs that say "This business is in Quebec" in french. Then just mount them under existing signs so no one in Quebec ever runs the risk of forgetting. It's important to remember.

Like the one important rule of Quebec politics is that any time the issue of "notre québec FRANÇAIS!!!" comes up in any shape you can practically give up on having any meaningful political conversation about anything worth a drat for at least a month.

It was pure genius. We're simply biologically unable to dodge empty national debates about are language and are culture

The 15 million hasn't come out of the budget until August 2016. I'm sure they will release emergency funds to help out. Thought it'll be hard to tell what's burnt from the fire and what is left from the extraction process.

I suspect you'd find near-universal support for several hugely important provisions of bill 101 - French as the language of the workplace, sending immigrants' kids to French school, French labelling on products and the like. The sign language regulations and things like the periodic panic about sales clerk speaking English are widely ridiculed, but they're not the heart of the Charte.

Oh hey so now literally the entire city of Fort McMurray is being evacuated. All 80,000 people are being redirected north to Noralta Lodge, which is next to a place called 'Tar Island.' That's a logistical nightmare; evacuating 80K people is hard at the best of times, but in this case it's pushing people further into the bush, because the only highway to Edmonton is on fire.

Solenna posted:yeah a fun game is to follow the roads north of Fort Mac, and see if you can get back to civilization without backtracking south on highway 63. I just moved out of Fort McMurray last week, and you are correct that the only route south is Highway 63 up until the point where Highway 881 splits off of it 20 minutes south of town. I worked in the assessment department up there, and Fort McMurray is almost uniquely well positioned to deal with this situation for being a remote northern community. There are 30,000+ workcamp beds in the rural area around the city, and a good number of those are located to the north of the city. Most of the major oilsands sites have their own airstrips where supplies can land. Atleast those people have a place to go while they wait for the escape route down south to open up again.

So hypothetically speaking, if the entire city burns to a crisp, with the state of the oilsands industry, will they even bother rebuilding?
