DOS era 3 1/2" disks were sold as DD or HD, and HD was twice the price over DD. Where 5 1/4" disks could be modded with scissors, the 3 1/2" ones were slightly more conplicated to fix. Me and my buddies who were poor highschool students at the time used an electric drill with a 5mm bit. Drill a hole in just the right spot, reformat and pray that no plastic shard went into the disk itself.

Win 10 is bad stop kidding yourself. They took their best two OS: XP and 7, and instead of retaining and enhancing their mature and beloved ui elements and aesthetic and learning what users like best about those versions and threw it all out the window for 8 and 10 plus decided for some reason one OS could service tablets and desktops. Even apple knew better than to go down that poo poo filled rabbit hole

Honestly the screenshot button is handy because it allows you to capture and save a cropped selection without using Irfan View or something, from inside the application you are already using. Unfortunately I know idiots who use it to send me pictures of text paragraphs or filenames because they think it's easier to use than Ctrl-C/V for some reason and don't care that I can't select the text from a jpg or whatever those images are.

This happened a couple of weeks ago. Colleague two seats down: "Hey could you do X process on this series of item IDs?" Me: "Sure, send them to me in Slack." Him: *sends me a screenshot of a table of about 20 ten-digit IDs* Me: *looks down the table at him* "Really?"

windows 10 is patronizing as gently caress and it's really infuriating. But it seems to be affecting all microsoft products made the last couple of years, not just windows. There are some competent engineers working on core technologies like drivers that can crash and restart without bringing down the whole system, the directx 12 stuff, lots of new metrics etc but almost everything was also in windows 8.1 and it's all buried beneath a mountain of bad decisions, ugly UI and "modern" apps you don't want to use because they are less functional than the old ones.

The one thing that I find that is just extremely stupid is why has the calculator been made into an "app" that uses 12MB of RAM just to open? I mean I know today's machines aren't RAM starved by any measure but it's the principle of the thing.

I forgive a lot of the mediocre UI decisions in W10 for the progress they've made in window management. The quarter-screen snapping (with sensible keyboard shortcuts!) is excellent, being able to drag/move the spilt between two half-screen windows is very long overdue, their exposé clone thing is useful, and I've even used their virtual desktops. Settings / control panel is still a huge mess, though. And yeah, the calculator is a good example of the downsides of modern apps. At least it looks and works well on a touch interface, I guess? When's the deadline to upgrade for free? I don't really want to but that's got to be coming up soon. Good thing they didn't make it during the school year.

There is also a persistent rumor that they'll extend it indefinitely (since they haven't quite gotten the uptake they wanted), though don't bet on that.

I recall back in 1997 Half Life ran beautifully on a system with 32 or 64MB of RAM. Now in 2016 the Steam application to launch it gobbles up I think around 128MB.

Since we are talking about bad MS decision making, Windows 10 pro will not be allowed to block the Windows 10 Store. Microsoft said it had made the change "by design". http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-36226372 Keep trying to pinch those pennies.

"Windows 10 Enterprise is our offering that provides IT pros with the most granular control over company devices," the tech giant said in a statement. "Windows 10 Pro offers a subset of those capabilities and is recommended for small and mid-size businesses looking for some management controls, but not the full suite necessary for IT pros at larger enterprises." Windows 10 Pro is not for professionals. Thanks for clearing that up, Microsoft.
