I picked a class that had [Professor Name] instead of "Staff" as the instructor, so the instruction should be tight.

Condolences. I'm job hunting and have the opposite "problem" because I figured I wouldn't get many interviews so I applied for a bunch of federal jobs and ended up with interviews for almost all of them. Already turned down two offers and I'm dragging out a third while I wait to hear back on a sweet job near Denver that I interviewed for last week. I'm finishing up an MA in history and there's a lot of stuff out there for history dorks if you expand your search to include museums and archives.

Thanks. I just got off the phone with an HR lady and she set me up for a phone interview on Monday. So things are looking up. They didn't have wages listed but I'm willing to do it for at least $12, I can make the rest up with GI bill. I'd have to relocate for the summer but that's a given with any of these.

I applied for a pathways internship with USGS in Ann Arbor back in February but never heard back on that one. It sounded like a perfect position until I got to the end of their questionaire and they asked about my knowledge about Great Lakes environmental science. Seems like they wanted an environmental scientist but advertised it as a geographer position. I regret the hours I spent loving with my USA Jobs resume now.

Art history is a course that you take for your own aesthetic edification. Provided you're in 2 and not 1 then there should be all kinds of renaissance butts and breasts to peep and you can actually follow how shading methods and new art materials enabled artists to more accurately portray rear end. If you're in the prehistory-renaissance course then you're looking at how bathroom graffiti became a thing, starting with some cave drawing of a pair of tits that incino man made. Either way art history is a visual class, so try to find things about the art that you like or appreciate.

You might not get the full experience at a community college but Art History offers up some great opportunities for social justice theater once you get into the colonial period.

I took art history (renaissance to modern) online from San Diego city college while I was stationed in Italy. I went over there with like 90 days of leave on the books and post-Afghanistan cash. On leave, I went around and saw a bunch of the art I learned about. I saw Goya's spooky paintings in the Prado and really nice Degas and Rousseau in the National Gallery in London and Bosch triptychs and all the nice poster fodder impressionist stuff in so many museums in the low countries and France and Germany, actually been to the Louvre 3? times now, I think. Been to see the cathedral in Ghent and wow man I've seen some beautiful poo poo and actually having things about them explained to me really helped make that overseas posting worthwhile just for the intellectual stimulation and australian tourist booty I was able to get in my off-duty time.

I really recommend everybody do their art history like that

Didn't. I had a similar GPA to Vasudus and it was never an issue. Once you have real world experience your GPA becomes less of a concern for graduate admissions.

Pretty much this. You need a sufficient combination of educational achievements vs. real world experience. If you've got a lot of one but not the other, it's doable either way.

Your letter of intent to your prospective program is the time to sell yourself - the school is making just as much as an investment in you as you are in them. Sure, having great grades AND a great background makes it easy, but most programs would probably rather take someone with a great background and okay grades vs. some 22 year old with zero experience outside of academia.

edit: call it the cheapening of education or degree inflation or whatever, but grad school admissions are nowhere near as rigorous as they were 10 years ago. Terminal masters programs are way, way more common and in a lot of fields that's your only gateway.

That's a relief. Mins isn't too bad though there are some bad grades from community college dragging my cumulative down a bit.

I've got undergrad research under my belt now, and will have an article published within the next year or so. I'm hoping that along with some quality time out in the real world can get me in someplace good. I've got some decent contacts so I should be able to stay involved one way or another. Plus I'll study really hard and give the GRE a first go.

I pretty much went from undergrad -> grad program -> part time research assistant for the department (long hours, paid dogshit) -> paid part time researcher for an independent consultant (few hours, paid insanely well) -> big boy consultant at a prestigious firm.

It's stepping stones, but the more research / experience you have the better off you'll be.

Not at all. Professional experience and a demonstrated interest in the subject matter trumps everything else. I was even going from a non-technical degree to a technical one; only thing they asked for was that I complete two prerequisites.

I've been to Florence a lot, and being able to go around and see really cool stuff like that really helped put in perspective the awesomeness of the architecture and art. The Duomo specifically because the guy that designed it was rivals with this other dude who was trying to be the lead builder, so the main dude pretty much shamed him out of the job and then came around and finished it himself. It's also like the biggest unsupported dome structure in the world, or was at some point.

Real talk: I usually open with a "knowledge bomb" which is something I stole from a cool instructor who would give us a cool anecdote about history or whatever. Like the civil war pretty much following this dude around and ending in his kitchen, or how Wikipedia pretty much relates everything to philosophy eventually. Gets the class in a better mood. Humor is subjective, some people hate jokes period. Cool little history or life factoids are always cool.

Joke answer: do your composite risk management talk for the class.
