Can I just say that I hate the people that get on social media and just spew about how much they love books. You know the type, "I spend my whole paycheck on books I'm a quack!" Or the "rainy day books books books cats books books." They post ecards about how they are HOPELESSLY addicted to books, relaxing with their BOOKS. "I'd rather be BOOKS." I worked in a bookstore for 5 years so I see a lot of these people. gently caress man, I read a lot too, I try to average around 50 a year, but I'm not going to climb to the top of a mountain and tell you how much I want to buy this Catcher in the Rye t-shirt because BOOKS.

It's weird because a lot of them seem to be women who wish they were living in Pride and Prejudice. They don't seem to grasp that this particular time period would be a miserable hell hole for women. Lead based make-up, spine and tit crushing corsets, not being able to leave the house alone.

Books are an objectively better medium of entertainment because they're older. New things can't be good, ever, and you're an mainstream idiot if you like some new things and not all old things. Not like me, with my superior printed words. eBooks are bad too, because they're on a computer and not a book, even though the exact same content of my book is in that eBook. Books.

They want to live in the world of the novel, where the heroine is smart, the snobby hero turns out to be a good person, and everything ends in a double wedding and true love. Nobody's saying "gently caress yeah! I don't want to vote or own property!"

Just to see that vein on their temple pop up.

I saw someone being all because they read books and didn't listen to Audiobooks, like you got a lesser experience or something with an Audiobook. I said I preferred Audio because I listened to them while driving to work/doing housework but apparently I'm not getting ~~the real experience~~

The Stephen Fry narrated Hitchhiker's Guide is so god drat good that I can't even read the text without hearing his voice. It's my preferred means of consuming that book and if you haven't heard it I highly recommend it.

Not going to argue that it wasn't a great time to be a woman, but afaik corsets were actually out of style during the time Austen wrote those books. Also, you know nobody's yearning to be a part of the pride and prejudice society. They want the romantic love story with secret letters and horses and carriages and fancy balls and the happy ending.

Picnic Princess posted:Everyone has been extremely civil and genuinely concerned, putting aside petty politics to come together as a community. WHEN THE COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER, THEY’RE GOING AFTER YOU NEXT I don’t know what it means when the mass media issues commands that we must “all come together” – but I instinctively recognize that I don’t want any of it. I am not sure exactly what liberals want when they insist that we must “join together” – but I instinctively realize that I don’t want it happening to me. I still don’t understand what government wants when it orders me to “be part of the community” – but I instinctively react against their communal indoctrination. Busybodies will do many unpleasant things to a human being in this life, but nothing is more unfortunate than ending up “united.” Community organizes are working on you for the same reason that the ranch hands go after the stock. Millions of years of evolution have taught me not to be part of any herd. Socialist collectives are merely an attempt to get human beings to revert to all-fours. The do-gooders try to round-up citizens the same way ranchers corral the beasts right before the slaughter. Coming together is always just a short distance from the abattoir. All I want from society is to be left alone. Next time that some social worker pounds on my door – I will kick him in the balls before he gets his compassion around me. Just try and lasso me with your empathy and you’ll feel my instep on your testacles. All that I ask of the bureaucrats is to keep their good intentions away from my body. A liberal helps a citizen the way a rancher assists his livestock with a cattle prod.

There was about a decade at the start of the 19th century where corsets were out, and dresses were high waisted and flowy because everything had to be Roman inspired. That's the time her books are set in, but every woman in them would have been wearing corsets before and after that tiny window of Neoclassicism.

That book art is awesome, however a retail copy of Pride and Prejudice for $45 that has the fold lines in it is just silly. We sold them one holiday season and we had 98% of the stock got to clearance and then donations. There is a huge difference between what you linked there and a lazy retail cash-in attempt as you try to find a gift for your cousin who you know reads but can't be bothered to find something better. I don't think I've ever drawn the comparison to Nazis.
