VileLL posted:how could anyone actually justify voting lib dem I voted Lib Dem with a Labour second preference. They're the party closest to my own ideas and, while I have very mixed feelings about the coalition years, I do believe that they got way too much flack for a minority partner in that government and that they stopped the Tories from doing quite a few bad things. But I'm used to coalitions and I feel like the Brits don't quite view them in the same way I do.

First results are in for NI, all major parties bar the UUP have seen dips in support (with SF losing over 3% of their first preference vote share) Former MP Naomi Long is in for Alliance in Belfast East easily. Anti-austerity socialist party PBP have had a very good showing, topping the poll in Belfast West and securing their first assembly seat. Their candidate Eamonn McCann polled stronger than expected and looks well placed to take another seat in Foyle if transfers from another left wing independent go his way l, which they should.

Again, don't read too much into that at a national level - Labour have pretty much a guaranteed 40% vote in London, and the Tories took drubbings even in the first election where Ken was splitting the vote (well actually I suppose Frank Dobson was splitting the Ken vote). The Tories have never particularly bothered to contest it or put their best and brightest in there (Liverpudlian Shagger Norris, or as he's known affectionately in London, "Who?" was their candidate for the first two elections because literally nobody else wanted it). Boris getting it was a major black eye for the Tory leadership who hoped he would Boris it all up and disappear back into obscurity, but the man ran a good campaign (with the assistance of the Standard when people still read it) as Livingstone melted down and more importantly did literally nothing at all even vaguely Tory once he got in, with the exception of calling in a couple of planning applications so his chums could build tall buildings. The very fact that the best face they could come up with to front their campaign was Zac Goldsmith, a man possibly genetically engineered to repulse anyone who's not a died-in-the-wool Tory, proves how little they actually cared about this campaign. Given just how bitter and negative the campaign was from them I have to wonder if it wasn't actually being used as a proving ground for a more American "Play the man, not the ball" campaign style.
